Hmmm....I've always wanted to know that too, Julian. Sorry but my post doesn't really help. Just like the P in A.P.K., the world may never know..........

The "J" doesn't stand for anything.

There was already a Michael Fox registered in the Screen Actors' Guild, so he decided to add a "J" as his makeshift middle initial.

Why "J?" Because it sounds better to him than "Michael A. Fox," which would better represent his real middle name - Andrew.

As for what the "P" stands for in "Alex P. Keaton" - I don't think that was ever established. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

He chose J in honor of one of his favorite actors-Michael J Pollard.

I thought this would be another case of Unsolved Mysteries. But I do remember hearing something like that. Wouldn't it be funny if the J stood for Jay, like when Homer found out what his middle name was. LOL.
