The scuttlebutt is that, back in 1964, the league wanted each of the teams to have a logo of some sort. Before the '60s, a bunch of teams just wore a unadorned helmet of a plain color, and the late '50s/early '60s was when most logos came into existence. (The better to merchandise you, my dear.) The Browns resisted the trend, but at behest of the league came up with this option, which was worn in a few preseason games but never made it into regulation play.
I don't mind the logo (what else are you going to do for "Browns"?) but I'm kind of glad that at least one team is still keeping the tradition of those old days.

Yeah, but now look at us...we're the laughing stock in the NFL! We could use this...

I think it's interesting how the Cincy Bengals don't have a logo on the helmet, just the bengal stripes -- of course the Rams do something similar as far as that goes, and the Vikings have those horns and the Eagles have the wings.
I remember when the Bengals just had their nickname spelled out on the helmets in capital letters (man I am getting old!). Maybe the Browns could do that if they wanted. But personally I like the "blank" helmet for them.

^I just like calling it The Barenaked Helmet (Okay...one of my favorite bands is The Barenaked Ladies, so that's where I got that from)!
I could say that The 'Browns' Helmets are pretty much...naked!
