I agree with SammyandDiane when they say that the best seasons were in the beginning of the series. I, personally, am a huge fan of the Diane era of Cheers. I don't feel that it was the same Cheers after Kirstie Alley joined. I am so glad that Shelley Long came back for the last episode. I watch the Rebecca episodes, but I never liked them as much as I liked the Diane episodes.

The Diane Seasons.. in my opinion, but by popularity, i think the 1990 ones went to #1

I'm a huge fan of seasons 4-6 (the last two Long years and the first Alley year) -- I think the writing is especially sharp and there are so many classic episodes during this era. N@N started showing season 7 a week or two ago, when a new production team took over (the producers from seasons 4-6 left to develop "Wings"), and it's amazing to me to see how sharp the decline in quality is. The scripts just seem duller and the dialogue is nowhere near as clever. And there are too many stories focusing on supporting characters like Woody and his girlfriend Kelly, or Cliff and his girlfriend Margaret.

BTW, I believe the show's ratings were actually a bit higher when it was ranked #3 during the 86-88 seasons than they were when the show finally hit #1 in 1990. The ratings for "The Cosby Show", which was #1 for a while, had declined to the point that "Cheers" was able to overtake it and achieve that ranking even though its audience had declined a bit, too (the ratings were still very strong, though).
