...that Thelma Lou was more attractive than Helen Crump? A lot of people seem to prefer the looks of Helen but I think Thelma Lou was much more attractive than Helen. I just noticed this in the color episode when returned.

I thought Thelma Lou was more attractive than Helen & she also had a better personality than Helen.
Marvo301 01-27-2011, 07:05 PM I always thought that Thelma Lou was very attractive.

This is a no-brainer, Thelma Lou blows Helen Crump away.
old grouch 01-30-2011, 02:54 PM Thelma Lou was pretty and usually pretty easy going, except when she was exasperated by Barney. Helen could be a bit of a nag.
ComedyGuy 01-30-2011, 03:19 PM Thelma Lou all the way and Helen on some episodes can be a real B!tch
rollo's girl 01-30-2011, 07:18 PM as my husband says "Thelma Lou was a babe!" Or as Barney says "va va va VOOM!" We met her in Mt. Airy several years ago and she is still lovely and as sweet as anyone could be.
Betty was robbed recently... She was waiting for a taxi and I believe someone ran up to her and stole cash. Not sure if they were caught. This was in Mt. Airy. God bless her, she seems like such a sweet lady.
biffbronson 02-03-2011, 07:46 AM I thought Aneta Corsaut (Helen) looked her best when she still had long or medium-length hair. At those times she looked just as attractive as Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) to me.
It's fun to see Betty on later appearances like My Three Sons and Matlock. She looked great on MTS especially -- a lovely redhead!
I agree, I did not like her hair in the color episodes. It looked much better in the black and white ones when it was longer and pulled up as opposed to the "chopped off" look in the later seasons!
LUNCH 02-09-2011, 04:51 PM I think they were about equal in the looks department. However what made Thelma Lou much more attractive and appealing is her warm, easy going persona.Helens personality and manner could be 'hard' and sometimes even cold.--They really should have brought back Elinor Donahue because she was attractive and had the personality to match, plus she played her part to perfection.
LUNCH 02-09-2011, 05:10 PM Also,as I'm sure most viewers of this great show noticed,Andy himself in the early seasons was a much more easy going, relaxed type of guy.In the later seasons, mainly the color seasons,he was often uptight etc. The chemistry(or rather lack of chemistry) between him and Helen was probably a factor, in addition to the show changing and of course Don Knotts leaving the show.

I always thought that Thelma Lou was a much better match for Andy than the evil Ms. Crump (kidding).
If Thelma Lou could have been Andy's girl Barney would still have been able to play the field (as he was always good at)...and Helen would have fit right in later as Howard Sprague's girl.
I think the writers could have made up some good back-and-forth between Thelma Lou and Aunt Bee...kind of girls telling things on boys.
Thelma Lou: "well Aunt Bee, I wouldn't know what to do if Andy asked me to marry him..I wouldn't know what to do..how do you take care of a man?"
Bee: "Oh you needn't worry Thelma Lou..Andy doesn't know a clean sock from a dirty one unless I tell him..sometimes I just take a pair out of the hamper and fold em up and he wears them again...our little secret (smiling)
Thelma Lou: "Oh Bee" (laughing).
Yes, I consider Thelma Lou more attractive than Helen, epecially personality-wise. There was an episode on TVLand yesterday in which we get to see all 4-- Helen, Thelma Lou, Andy, and Barney-- in a comedy of multiple misunderstandings, and none of the 4 of them shows any patience or tolerance of a wrong word or wrong subject being brought up. They all just fly off the handle at anything. I particularly disliked it when both women got their panties in a wad over hearing that Andy said, "When a third party make some comment...." when they knew that referred to Helen. But Andy was just speaking of the general case in conversation; that is, not limited to the one comment that Helen made, but any time someone does that. But I suppose the 'subject' of this ep is that when things seem to ge going well with people, we tend to look for excuses to be accusative. Wtihout conflict, there is no story, so if there's no story we create conflict.
oldschool59 04-23-2011, 09:12 PM Helen Crump wasn't even attractive, much less pretty. Thelma Lou had a much better personality and she was attractive to boot. The best female sidekick for Andy was and always will be Ellie Walker from the drug store. From what I understand from Andy Griffin was that he treated her poorly from the beginning and she didn't want to return. He admitted this during an interview sometime in the 80's I think. Ellie Walker was a fine filly indeed!
Dud Wash 05-05-2011, 12:27 PM I didn't care for Helen Frump... I mean Crump that much. Thel was much more fun and attractive.
