In fact, "GIDGET" was one of Screen Gems' first color series introduced in the 1965-'66 season (another was the hour-long comedy/drama "THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY" on NBC's Sunday night schedule, which lasted as long as "GIDGET" did). For the most part, the studio resisted color filming on most of their series before 1966 because they were notoriously cheap about spending the extra money to film in color. In fact, they told Sidney Sheldon, who insisted on filming the first season of "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" [which he produced and owned] in color, going so far as offering to pay the extra cost out of his own pocket for color, "Don't throw your money away". He later found out they didn't believe his series would last beyond its first season, deciding it wasn't worth the extra effort- and money- to film it in color. Well, it DID, and they finally allowed Sheldon to film season two in color...at the same time all the broadcast networks began scheduling "all-color" prime-time lineups in the fall of '66. That meant Screen Gems had to start filming "BEWITCHED" in color as well {they claimed the special effects cost "too much money" to initially film the show in color}. Yet, it cost Sony {Screen Gems/Columbia's future owner} millions of dollars to "colorize" all the black and white episodes of "JEANNIE" and "BEWITCHED" in 2000 because of Screen Gems' cheap attitude in the '60s. Fortunately, "GIDGET" didn't have to go through all that....
