View Full Version : Does Anybody Agree That Joanie & Chachi Were One Of TV's Worst Matched Couples???
Brian Damage 01-22-2011, 07:14 PM I mean no offense to Joanie/Chachi fans. I am just curious what is everybody's opinions on this tv couple. Their spinoff did fail because I think others didn't like the joanie/Chachi dynamic. Do you agree? Disagree?

Retro4Life 01-22-2011, 07:41 PM I'm probably in the minority here, but I never could stand the character of Chachi. For one thing he seemed ridiculously out of place in the 50's and early 60s, with his hair and general attitude. And I just never warmed to him; he was so cocky and self-assured. I never like the "Oh I'm just being a jerk to you because I really love you" shtik, and that's what it always seemed like he was doing with Joanie.
tmac81s 03-22-2011, 06:38 AM I liked them as a couple.
As for the series, I've not seen every episode, but the ones I have seen, I didn't really care for the other characters. They were also in a totally, different element than they were on "Happy Days," so it felt different watching them here than seeing them on that show.
I've seen other posts saying that it would have been better if the show had come out in 84, after HD ended. I think this would have been pretty good, the series would start with them as a newlywed couple starting their life together. Maybe have Jenny Piccalo as their neighbor, and some of the HD cast guest star every now and then. I wouldn't have the band, or Al and Chachi's mother as regular characters though.
old grouch 03-22-2011, 02:31 PM Joanie and Chachi's relationship was more interesting when Chachi was younger and shorter than Joanie and he was always chasing after her. Once he caught her, things got a little dull.
TripperFan 03-22-2011, 04:38 PM Without a doubt! I could never figure it out. Then when I heard they dated in real life it really floored me.
Waterston_Fan 03-22-2011, 09:54 PM Wow...
I did see one episode of J/C on youtube where TB/MR make a guest appearence. Even though it was one episode, it just didn't catch me...
And I guess I can see why some HD fans ask about the second baby since it was mentioned on this show.
I think they just messed it up or didn't talk to the writers of HD.

And because of that it was the LEAD show on Thursday Nights and bombed
catlover79 03-23-2011, 03:31 AM I thought they made a cute couple (and thought it was quite fitting that Happy Days ended with their wedding, with Tom Bosley stepping out of character and toasting the audience). However, I think their spinoff was a MAJOR mistake.
I seem to remember Erin Moran being quoted as not wanting to leave Happy Days because she didn't think the spinoff would fly. Thank goodness she was a Cunningham and still had a show to go back to!!
TVFactFan 03-23-2011, 07:25 AM I think the show was based in Chi-town

I actually liked them as a couple during their teen years on Happy Days, but it was the Spin-off is when I just got extremely bored with them altogether. That had to be one of the worst spin-offs that featured a popular couple. I wasn't surprised when the show was cancelled, and they returned to Happy Days' Finale to have their wedding.
So I actually feel it was the Joanie Loves Chachi sitcom that threw things off for me.

Now that is funny since the show didn't last longer than one season. So maybe it had a high premiere because these were two popular characters, but dropped off quickly after that...LOL

Well, when JLC first aired in the spring of 1982, its competition was mostly reruns - and it had a plum timeslot right after Happy Days. Then, when it returned in the fall, and on a different night, the ratings took a swandive and never recovered. Thus, Erin Moran, Scott Baio and Al Molinaro returned to Happy Days the second the show was cancelled.

I Agree he was out of place with the hair and how he dressed. But i didn't not like character ,really no opinion either, some of the shows based around him i liked and some i didn't . But that's the same with the other characters some shows that revolved around them i liked and some i didn't with Richie & Fonzie
As far as them as a couple, i didn't mind them and i was OK with the show Joanie Loves Chachi. Wish i had them all on DVD, i have a small handful of them. As far as not like certain shows,i still have every show on DVD i love the show and not liking some episodes . i will still watch those when watching a season
Bronson 08-18-2012, 03:54 PM I loved them together as a couple. As for the spinoff, it was not great but it was not so bad either. It was growing on me.
TVFactFan 08-18-2012, 08:38 PM Its a shame that Richie never made a guest appearance

It would have if they had left the show between Happy Days and Three's Company on Tuesday Nights
Edward216 03-12-2015, 12:44 AM Yeah maybe. But I was a teenager when it was on originally so I might feel differently about seeing it now. Who knows. But at the time I liked it.

Did Ron Howard appear as a guest? Or was it just Fonzie and Mr. and Mrs C?
DJM77 03-12-2015, 05:48 AM Did Ron Howard appear as a guest?
No, he didn't.
Babalu 09-05-2015, 11:27 PM I was a big Happy Days fan and I think the number one mistake they made was continuing the show without Ron Howard. But to me the next worse mistake they made was Chachi. I hated him and hated the annoying cloying Scott Baio. I never watched Joanie Loves Chachi and to this day if I see Scott Baio being interviewed I change the channel.

i don't rembmer if on tv it was a spin of happy days
many years ago i find it on youtube the story lines were confusing to watch

I agree. They should have given HD a proper send off after Ron Howard and Don Most left the show. The last years of HD were just sad to watch.
Scott Baio was decent as a child actor, but the character of Chachi was a one trick pony at best. There was also zero chemistry between Scott Baio and Erin Moran which was surprising since they were banging in real life.
I think one of the many issues with JLC was the fact that society as a whole was outgrowing the Marshall-verse. L&S ran out of steam a year before HD ended, and M&M had been long gone. It was the end of an era.

Only Scott Baio & Erin Moran returned to Happy Days as regulars after their spinoff was cancelled, but Al was apparently left back in Chicago with Louisa, at least until the finale, where he played both Al and his twin, Father Delvecchio, who married Joanie & Chachi. I found it interesting that Scott Baio was billed above Erin Moran in the last season, as she was with the show from the beginning and had always been billed above him before.

Why was Al on Joaine Loves Chachi?
Mr. Television 06-07-2016, 07:52 PM Why was Al on Joaine Loves Chachi?
He married Chachi's Mom.

so they didn't mention the marriage of Al and Chachi's mom at all once JLC was cancelled?
Schmoopie 07-07-2016, 01:03 AM I actually loved them together. I kind of miss "Joanie Loves Chachi"
MRPITT 07-07-2016, 01:11 PM I dont think they were the worst matched couple, but I wasnt really crazy about them either. I think
Sam And Diane (Cheers),
Niles and Daphne(Frasier)
Jackie and Fez (70's Show)
were worse just to name a few.
I found it interesting that Scott Baio was billed above Erin Moran in the last season, as she was with the show from the beginning and had always been billed above him before.
Contract demand (ego trip)

Erin and Scott dated one another and then broke up before Joanie Loves Chacci started. She hated his guts (after her death, we can clearly see he is a heel) and didn't want to do the show. She wanted to remain on Happy Days though that show ended and then agreed to do Joanie Loves Chacci. You could clearly see that the awkwardness on the show if you can tolerate to see more than a few minutes of it.l
TVFactFan 03-11-2020, 09:31 PM This pointless spinoff with two minor characters in love. That would be like Larry and Greedy Gretchen on TC getting their own show:lol:
icecream 05-12-2020, 05:12 PM This pointless spinoff with two minor characters in love. That would be like Larry and Greedy Gretchen on TC getting their own show:lol:I wouldn't consider Joanie a minor character. Her role on Happy Days really increased when TV sibling Ron Howard left, after Fonzie and maybe her parents Joanie was the most important part of the post-Richie era, with Chachi right after her at #5. Even when Ron Howard and Donny Most were still on the show, Joanie's role was gradually increased from the start when she didn't have much lines. Originally I didn't like season 10 of Happy Days as much with Erin Moran and Scott Baio gone for the Joanie Loves Chachi spin-off. But that was before I became a Crystal Bernard fan from Wings, it has been way too long recently since any station aired Happy Days.

Right it was minor until 1980 so maybe that's why they had the idea because of her increased role form 80 to 82
