ABC has confirmed that Rebecca Herbst will leave General Hospital this spring.

Soaps In Depth confirmed on Tuesday that the actress - who plays surgical nurse Elizabeth Webber on the soap - would not continue past the end of her current contract.

"Storyline dictates the exit of Elizabeth Webber this spring. The next few months promise to be a 'not-to-miss' story for the character," the network said in a statement.

"We at ABC and GH wish Rebecca Herbst nothing but the best in her future endeavours."

Herbst's final airdate has not yet been announced.

Co-stars react to Rebecca Herbst's firing

13-year General Hospital veteran Rebecca Herbst will exit the show later this year. According to a show rep, the exit is dictated by story. Herbst made her first GH appearance in August 1997.

The out-of-the-blue dismissal of General Hospital star Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber) has set the Internet ablaze. In the hours following the confirmation of the actress' ouster from her home of nearly 14 years, it wasn't just fans who took to message boards and social media to express their unhappiness with the decision. Several of Herbst's co-stars have also voiced their shock and heartbreak.

"[I am] really shocked...will miss her gorgeous smile!" Lisa LoCicero (Olivia Falconeri) posted on Twitter. "Becky will be snapped up by another show in no time. No doubt about it."

"[M]ost of you have heard the horrible and awful news about Becky," Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) wrote on his Twitter page. "My heart breaks as I even have to tweet this. One of the best and most beautiful actresses that has been on this show. Beside that, she's a friend and that hurts. Some show will be lucky to have her. May God bless them through this transition. Much luv to [husband] Michael and Becky."

"So sad and devastated by the loss of Becky, an amazingly talented woman, from the GH cast," added Kelly Monaco (Sam McCall), also via Twitter. "It makes me worry about the future of Daytime."

"In my many years on General Hospital dozens of actors [have] come and gone in one fashion or another," Tyler Christopher (Nikolas Cassadine) said in a statement on his Facebook page. "I have never been as shocked as I am now over Becky being let go. Elizabeth Webber has been an intricate part of Nikolas Cassadine since nearly the inception of the Characters. I will miss that... and my friend."

Herbst joined the cast of General Hospital in August 1997. In 2007, the actress received an Outstanding Supporting Actress nomination at the Daytime Emmys.

She did a great job with her rape storyline in early 1998. She did a great job playing out both the rape itself and the aftermath. She got nominated for an Emmy for that story, and lost to Heather Tom (then of Y&R). I STILL think Becky got robbed.

It's nice to see Becky getting so much support and love from her castmates. I think that speaks volumes about her not only as an actress but as a person.

I hope another show picks her up quickly. I'd gladly accept her on Y&R!

I haven't been this angry about a GH firing since they gave 30+ year cast member Stuart Damon (Alan) the heave-ho.

A Reversal of Fortune at "GH"
by Allison Waldman
posted Feb 20th 2011

Just a few weeks ago, we reported "General Hospital" 13-year-veteran Rebecca Herbst was let go ... It was shocking news and created an uproar among fans.

Apparently, the folks at ABC and "GH" were listening because it looks like Herbst may be sticking around Port Charles after all.

ABC Soaps in Depth reported that set sources revealed that Herbst has been 'unfired,' and shortly thereafter, Soap Opera Digest echoed the news that Herbst's status was being reconsidered.

Actress Laura Wright, who plays Carly on "GH", confirmed the news (sort of) that her costar was retained when she tweeted last Friday, "I think its true Becky is STAYING!"

All signs suggest that next week ABC will be making a formal announcement that Herbst is not going anywhere.

Now the question is, can they actually write for this legacy character the proper way?
