Regis Philbin says he's finally ready to give up his talk show gig ... after 28 years on the morning shift.

79-year-old Philbin made the announcement this morning on "Live with Regis and Kelly."

Regis said he'll tape his last show towards the end of the summer -- but he didn't give a specific date.

Now it will ,no doubt,be known as "Live with Kelly and Whoever",which it probably was known as when Regis was gone. But it makes you wonder who will take his place.

Well, looks like I'll have another free hour of my day when September 2011 comes around. Good thing I actually thought to watch "Live!" today (I did want to see Angie Dickinson's interview), because Regis announced this big news during the host chat today, which caught me totally by surprise. Seriously, lots of luck to Regis on his retirement.

Best wishes to Reege on his retirement. Let's hope his replacement is NOT Kelly's husband.

...Regis became host of WABC-TV's "THE MORNING SHOW" in 1982. It was just a "modest" local morning talk show in New York before he took it over. Then it started to "build itself up"- especially when Kathie Lee Gifford became his co-host in 1983. Its steady momentum and popularity became such that Disney's Buena Vista Television wanted to syndicate it nationally in 1988- then it became "LIVE WITH REGIS AND KATHIE LEE"...and when she left in 2000, Kelly Ripa took her place {"...REGIS AND KELLY"}. I'm certain Disney/ABC Domestic Television would have loved to squeeze a year or two more out of Philbin, but he correctly realized it was about time to "get off the stage". That's the end of an era....

Nobody. When Reege retires the show should end.

And I heard that one of the contenders is none other than the all-new hourlong "Let's Make A Deal"host Wayne Brady.I cannot see him as Regis' successor.CNN's Anderson Cooper(who has subbed for Regis on "Live"before )would be a good fit.I think when Regis leaves, they should cancel the show as well.

...the last thing Disney/ABC Domestic Television wants to do is end a syndicated series that's brought them more revenue (and power) than any other daily program they've produced over the past 20 years. So look for "LIVE WITH KELLY AND REGIS' CHAIR" to stay on the air for an indefinite period....

I love Regis Philbin, and although I like the combination of him and Kelly, I think he's the true star of that show. Just wouldn't be the same if they continued it without him. I hope he doesn't just disappear all together although he certainly deserves retirement. He's worked hard for it!

Pat Sajack?

Kelly might just revamp the whole show, you can never tell.

Regis and Kelly did four shows back in July on Prince Edward Island (the province I live in). I didn't get to see the shows in person, but I did get to watch them on TV. I was impressed with the exposure we got.

My uncle's boss got to take Regis on his mussel-fishing boat. He said that Regis and Kelly were very down-to-earth people and they had a lot of fun. They enjoyed their stay and couldn't believe how many fans came out to see their shows (it was the largest crowds they've ever seen).

Best of luck to Regis on his retirement. I'm not sure who could replace him.

:tv:I've heard that the ratings have gone down a bit. So,who knows? In the cutthroat world of daytime TV,anything can happen.
