In watching the classic episodes with Jerry Orbach, they were frequently waking up Lennie and whoever his partner-du-jour was in the middle of the night to take on a case.

My question was always: Didn't they have detectives covering the night shift who could take on the overnight cases, as Lennie was generally working the day shift?
