As the owner of a Thomas Brothers Los Angeles/Orange County atlas I took it out to see if Clinton Way is in Santa Monica. According to Sherwood Schwartz this was the suburb in which the Bradys lived. (You could own a pay phone there in the 1970s!) However, there is no Clinton Way (or Avenue or anything) in Santa Monica. Elsewhere in Los Angeles County Clinton Avenue, Place, and Street exist. But not way.

I'm surprised Robert Reed didn't catch this. Or wasn't he into maps?

But I'm sure that when it comes to street addresses on TV shows, Robert Reed wouldn't have necessarily insisted on using an actual street address, for the same reasons that they didn't use real people's phone numbers.

But I can see him going into Sherwood's office and saying "did you know that there is not a single 'Clinton Way' in ALL of Los Angeles?" lol Without Googlemaps, I can even picture Reed staying up all night, pouring over every square inch of an L.A. street map, looking to see if he could find any "Clinton Ways".

I think that, while it was clear that they did live in California, I don't think Sherwood ever wanted their home address to be pinned down to any particular neighborhood or section of town.

Clinton Way/Clinton Ave. doesn't exist. It's fictional. They needed a street address for the Brady's So Lloyd Schwartz suggested Clinton Way/Ave. after the street his grandparents liven on. Also it was never mentioned or even hinted on the show that the Brady's lived in Santa Monica. That's just something Sherwood Schwartz told Bob Reed to shut him up. There was a Brady script about Mike installing a payphone in the house. And Sherwood knew Bob would do the homework to see if that was even legal and then complain to him about it. So Sherwood called the phone company himself and found out the one place in the U.S. that it's legal to install a payphone in a private residence is Santa Monica. Armed with this info. Sherwood was ready when Bob called to complain about this plot point. Where do the Brady's live Bob asked. Oh somewhere in southern California. But where in Southern California Bob asked. In the Los Angeles area I guess. But where in the Los Angeles area Bob wanted to know. Santa Monica. Click. End of conversation. :lol:

Interestingly, for those who remember that the Bradys' house number was 4222, in the city of Los Angeles proper there is a 4200 block of Clinton Street in ZIP code 90004, a block south of Melrose Avenue, off of US 101 (and CA 2), south of Los Angeles City College. Come to think of it, I was just south of Clinton Street when I took North Vermont Avenue north to catch "the 101" on a trip I took to L. A. two years ago! Clinton was right after the on-ramp!
