In the “worst-kept secret” department, word leaked today on who will be singing the National Anthem during the upcoming broadcast of Super Bowl XLV, to be carried live by Fox, HitFix.com reported.

For its part, the NFL isn’t confirming anything. But multiple sources say the Anthem will be handled by Grammy winner Christina Aguilera, star of the current feature film "Burlesque."

Aguilera’s delivery of "The Star-Spangled Banner" marks a return to the Super Bowl for the star. She appeared during the halftime show back in 2000, when the lineup also included Enrique Iglesias and Phil Collins.

Last year, it was Carrie Underwood who performed the National Anthem.

The Super Bowl will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 6.

Christina Aguilera, always a pro singing the national anthem, couldn't make it through the Star Spangled Banner before the kickoff of Super Bowl XLV. Aguliera, who has handled the task without issue before NBA games, botched the lyrics badly halfway through the song.



Instead of "'O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming" turned into "what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last [unintelligable lyric]."


Luckily, Aguilera had the quick, crowd-rousing "rocket's red glare" line to follow it up, which she nailed and got the packed Cowboys Stadium quickly on her side.

Still, our eyewitnesses in Dallas tell us that the crowd had some drastic reactions. "This was the biggest performance of her career and she blew it," a source with a VIP view tells me. "To mess up the lyrics was a disaster."




Another source tells us the televised roars of the crowds weren't as loud in person. "A hush fell over the stadium and everyone was looking at each other."

After the Star Spangled Banner wrapped, Aguilera headed backstage where a source tells me that the singer is "devastated."

"She knows she messed up big time. It's an honor to be ask and she let America and herself down. She doesn't want anyone around her. Everyone telling her she was great but she knows the truth."

I knew she would desecrate it. :rolleyes: Other than Roseanne Barr's pathetic rendition, her's is the worst I've ever heard.

I caught the error, and I wasn't watching or listening too closely either...

She once visited one of the high schools in my hometown years ago, while already a major celebrity, and by all accounts was very nice. So I'm reluctant to say anything bad about her. I do think she should try her old chin-length bob again though -- her current style looks like it was machete-chopped..!

Christina Aguilera made the same mistake most celebrities make when they are asked to sing the anthem. Instead of singing the anthem she attempted to perform the anthem. Trying to turn the anthem into performance is in my opinion both disrespectful and tasteless. And as Ms. Aguilera showed causes the performer to be prone to errors. The anthem should be sung not performed.

The thing is, we're not sure whom to blame.



True, Roseanne makes no attempt to sing in anything that resembles proper pitch.

But shouldn't the real blame lie with the organizers of this 1990 San Diego Padres game? Did they really think the shrill comedienne had a set of hidden pipes as yet unrevealed to the American public?

She forgets the lyrics twice and sneaks off for a cheat sheet, only to fall flat on her back as she returns to the rink.

Immortalized by a TV news crew, this 2006 performance of the national anthem by a Chattanooga police officer is downright shameful.

His fellow officers struggle to remain stoic as he butchers the lyrics from beginning to end. The awful rendition is made worse by the occasion — a memorial for fallen officers.

Midway through, Lewis promises he'll "make it up" to the booing crowd, only to butcher the remaining few bars.

Oh, and by the way, dude can't throw a baseball, either.

Still, this interpretation spins a bit out of control.



The audience — who did not want to clap their hands, thank you very much Mr. Kelly — soundly booed his ill-advised smoovification of the Francis Scott Key original.

If you can suffer through her lengthy, ahem, interpretation, the boos raining down from the Dallas Cowboy crowd are easily the best part.

The man has had eight Top 10 albums — he should have at least been able to remember the lyrics to one of the nation's most-familiar tunes.

In Christina Aguilera's rendition at the 2011 Super Bowl, it wasn't the song's notoriously high notes that gave her trouble, but rather its quaint 19th century phraseology.

While Aguilera deserves credit for choosing to sing the song live in front of millions of people, there's little excuse for forgetting the words to the beloved, oft-performed anthem.

They should have just played Jimi Hendrix's version from Woodstock. That gets my vote as the best renditon of the national anthem.

Should also mention I like Marvin Gaye's rendetion from a 1983 Los Angeles Lakers game as well.
