Television writer Stephen Falk recently happened upon the original casting breakdown for Modern Family, a revealing look into who executives hoped to land for the show (or at least, what sort of "type" they were searching for). In addition to the idea of Craig T. Nelson as Jay — whom the network almost cast before turning to Ed O'Neill — there are a lot of fun what-ifs, including Lisa Kudrow as Claire or Andy Richter and Arrested Development's Tony Hale as gay couple Mitchell and Cameron. (Meanwhile, Sofia Vergara and Ty Burrell can take comfort in the fact that they were intended to star in the project from the very start.)

I love the cast the way it is. Those other people are boring, except for Craig T. Nelson since he is on Parenthood!
