Is this true? I read she starred in one season before her 'Laverne & Shirley' days. Why did she leave?

Penny Marshall was only in one episode of "The Bob Newhart Show" playing a stewardess. She couldn't have been a regular on TBNS because at the time she was busy playing the recurring role of Myrna Turner on "The Odd Couple".

Yes, she only guested in the pilot episode, "Fly the Unfriendly Skies" - as a stewardess.

He most likely was thinking of The Odd Couple -- as far as leaving, I don't know about the timing but it's claimed her brother Garry created L & S specifically for her. So obviously there's no question she would have left most any cast member role to star in her own series.

She also made a few guest spots on The Mary Tyler Moore Show as one of Mary's neighbors in the high rise apartment. I think her character's name was Paula.

I always thought she played one of Bob's patients in the support group.

No, but she did play a stewardess in the first season BNS episode "Fly the Unfriendly Skies". In that story, Bob's therapy group tries to conquer their fear of flying. Emily, however, is so terrified of flying she actually gets the plane to go back so she can get off!!!
