Since you have to assume that Bonnie Franklin had essentially " complete creative control" after the second season, the way her character was written was the way she wanted her to be written. I always thought her character's being difficult and unpleasant was a mirror showing Ms. Franklin's true personality.

She wasn’t the idealistic 50s/60s sitcom mom, but those days were gone. More Norman Lear type realism was in.
