View Full Version : The Brady Kids Cartoon: Was This Any Good Or Was It Just Another Bad Brady Spinoff? Brian Damage 12-27-2010, 09:35 PM http://www.tvparty.com/vgifs14/bradykids2.jpg angiefan 12-27-2010, 09:44 PM It was good. It needs to be on dvd. Marvo301 12-27-2010, 10:14 PM Who ever created and wrote The Brady Kids was obviously on drugs!! And considering it was the 1970's I guess that was no surprise! I definitely consider this the worst Brady spinoff! Retro4Life 12-27-2010, 10:26 PM Yeah, I have a a pretty hazy memory of it but I don't recall it being very good (or necessary). The kids without parents or Alice really didn't make much sense, and the addition of a magical bird (and panda!) didn't really help. Whatever appeal the real show had was at least trying to reflect the concerns of real kids growing up in the 70s, but this pretty much stayed in the land of fantasy. It WAS nice to have most of the kids doing their own character voices, though. Marvo301 12-27-2010, 10:38 PM It was bad enough that the kids were living in a treehouse without any adult supervision. But the addition of characters like Marlon the Mynah bird (who was a wizard) Mop Top the dog and Ping and Pong, twin Panda's who spoke in Chinese sounding gibberish, was way over the top. This show gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "far out!"   As far as the cast voicing their own characters that was true in season 1. In season 2 Only Eve Plumb, Susan Olson, and Mike Lookinland voiced their own characters. The others were replaced by other actors. old grouch 12-28-2010, 02:36 PM I thought 'The Brady Kids' was far out and groovy when I was a kid. biffbronson 12-28-2010, 04:46 PM I thought it was okay when I was a kid. I haven't seen it since. Remember that this was titled The Brady Kids -- adult supervision didn't go along with the show's theme! The treehouse was obviously a means to have them on without Mike, Carol, or Alice around. I guess I should comment on the topic, the series was pretty bad....agreed with everything you said regarding "The Brady Kids"..... but its your avatar I want to comment on.....I would think 98% percent of the people here have no idea where it comes from?....but I want to say I really appreciate it and am lucky enough to have all 4 specials produced....christmas, thanksgiving, easter & valentines....why they aren't all on DVD puplexes me as they are owned by CBS/viacom. Happy New Year! Happy New Year! Thanks! I have very fond memories of those specials, and I agree that they are truly "forgotten gems" in the annals of TV holiday offerings. I can't believe that Lisa Lucas didn't go on to greater stardom, but that's more than likely a choice she made. I'm glad that someone recognized the avatar. Makes me feel a little less...well...old! treky 12-29-2010, 03:43 AM Thanks! Makes me feel a little less...well...old! I also recognize the avatar! You're right-those specials truly are "forgotten gems" that deserve to be on DVD!!! But, on to the topic of this thread-I remember "THE BRADY KIDS" cartoon series. Haven't seen it in years. But as I recall; yea it WAS pretty bad. catlover79 12-29-2010, 03:44 AM From little of it I've seen, it's pretty bad. Then again, it was the 70s!! Marvo301 12-29-2010, 03:59 AM 164112 Here's what the animated Brady kids and their animal friends looked like for those whose memory is a little faint. biffbronson 12-29-2010, 09:19 AM Wow -- see, that's a large cast for a limited-budget animated TV show. Toss in Mike, Carol, and Alice, and things really get out of control! lol Maybe the pandas could have been cut out... I didn't remember them anyway! Jude The Obscure 01-18-2011, 02:32 PM I watched it as a kid and then again on TV Land's shortlived block of retro cartoons..when I did, i was like......oh my, this is horrible. I'd rather have all the episodes of the variety hour!! comedyfreak 01-20-2011, 05:03 AM I liked this series when I was a kid watched it all the time. old grouch 01-20-2011, 02:24 PM If you think 'The Brady Kids' is awful, you should try watching 'The Partridge Family 2200 AD'. It's a lot worse. jehobden 01-20-2011, 08:14 PM It was good. It needs to be on dvd. I saw a couple eps of this on TV Land several years back when TV Land had an "Everything Brady" week, when it also reran the first 2 eps of the Variety Hour. It was so-so, I thought, not as bad as The Partridge Family: 2200 AD. I was wondering why I never saw it much as a kid, then I read that it was scheduled on ABC-TV at 10:30 AM ET, the exact same time that my favorite cartoon that year, The Barkleys, was on NBC-TV. The Barkleys was DePatie-Freling's take on the Generation Gap, including Arnie Barkley, the patriarch of a family of dogs who looked and acted pretty human other than having snouts. Arnie Barkley was a bus driver, just like Ralph Kramden, but he acted as much like Archie Bunker as Saturday morning tv would allow. I have 2 eps of The Barkleys on videotape from EBay. Strangely enough, Henry Corden, the voice of Arnie Barkley and the eventual voice of Fred Flintstone (after Alan Reed's passing), appeared on BB, after voicing Arnie Barkley, as Mr. Haskell, the ice cream shop owner, in Season 5's "Marcia Gets Creamed". Steve Carras 01-30-2011, 01:51 AM Thanks! Lisa Lucas was that young girl in 1971's "littlest Tree" or something, partly written by Joanna "Gazoo"/"Plan 9 from Outer space" Lee and Earl "Walton" Hamner Jr."], you have Kathy Coleman from "Land of the Lost"!:) Maybe you'd want to restore your Lisa Lucas avatar! So you had that girl's avatar...haven't seen that special in YEARS and YEARS!! But on-topic: "The Brady Kids" sucked rotten eggs. treky 01-30-2011, 02:10 AM it was called "THE HOME WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE" and it was in 1973 or 74, not 71. Steve Carras 01-30-2011, 06:20 PM it was called "THE HOME WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE" and it was in 1973 or 74, not 71. Thanks. I remember the girl's NAME-----the SPECIAL------and the THEME----and what the house NEEDED---but I'd forgotten the NAME, and the YEAR. Thanks. Now, to make your that Retrol4life's avatar references make sense, maybe he'd or she'd better put the Lisa Lucas pic back in there!!! ! For all concerned, hers was the pic in there, but now it's been replaced... DavidDMI 03-15-2011, 05:01 AM I love The Brady Kids cartoon! I wish they would release it on DVD.In the late 70s,I used to watch it in syndication, every day after school. Joyce LaKee 03-16-2011, 06:07 PM It wasn't well written or well animated, but if you're a fan of 70's kitch (and I am), you'll like this for the nostalgia value. Steve Carras 05-16-2011, 02:21 AM Due to the historically bad [by any standards] animation of the studio for this, Filmation, my nickname for that studio is Fugmation.:D [Fugly-ly+Filmation-Film=Fug+mation=Fugmation..:)] Cori aka ChrisSCrush 07-03-2011, 01:15 AM All I remember is liking the music. :) |
