I was over at my cousin's house yesterday and we were talking about all the TV stations you can get now with both cable and satelite. Way in the hundreds. We also discussed if some of those channels are even necessary. There is one channel that just shows the earth from a satelite view. Who is going to spend their time watching that??? Alson the C-Span channels. I do know some people are into politics but I would rather not watch a bunch of polticians argue at each other all day.

What channels are on now do you think are unnecessary???

As more and more formerly niche channels shift toward general entertainment, you'll see more "unnecessary" channels because of the simple fact that there will be very little to distinguish them from each other. Just last night, I saw that The Golf Channel was showing Analyze This. What!? Um... fore?

I don't think that there are any unnecessary channels as market forces will remove or end any channels that aren't getting good ratings and I have a remote that works if I don't like what's on.

But do you pay the cable bill in your household because if you did you would be singing a different tune.

I have DISH and I pay the bill.
The extra channels are on there and if they don't get watched (which most don't) they just as good as being gone.

I concur, so many channels now are almost the same channel, just with different names.---When there were far less cable channels--- there was alot more variety.

Univision,the Spanish Channel,for one.
Yeah,I also agree with that. There should not be any spanish stations.I think,Univision used to be the only one,now there are alot more of them. And really,in America I don't think they should have any of these stations.Or the maximum should be just one spanish language station.---Overall the opening question is a hard one for me to answer because there are SO many unnecessary, useless channels and since we never view them I don't even know the names of most of these channels.

Umm..because you can't speak Spanish and don't watch the Spanish language channels, no one else should be able to?
You do realize that you can block those channels from your box don't you?

One of the many problems w/ this country is people not expanding their intellectual horizons. If you have no desire to do that, why bother telling people that you aren't?

How about all of those insane shopping and auction channels? When I had DISH I bet there were 10. Most of them (save for QVC and HSN, maybe the NBC one) didn't look trustworthy at all. "Liquidation Channel" was a joke.

I wish we only paid for what we watch!

We only have the channels we watch on our favorite guide. The channels we don't watch outweighs the ones we do.

As far as I'm concerned they can remove all

shopping channels
C-Span channels/too many political channels
Paid programming/infomercial channels
golf
hunting type channels
Oprah's even though it starts in Jan.
TV Land
WE
Oxygen
the music channels
TLC (because I don't feel it's the Learning Channel any longer, has jumped ship)
I agree about the bazillion sports channels, most are useless
I'm sure there are many more but I don't remember them all.

We don't watch the ones below much but do watch sometimes

Green channel (has one show we love about Florida wildlife officers)

Hallmark (enjoy some of the movies)

Lifetime Movies (enjoy some of the movies)

The travel channel (we enjoy the Extreme Christmas shows in Dec. but that's it)

Lifetime Movie Network does show some interesting films so I can live with it, but indeed, most of the others mentioned are not needed.

I don't really understand the issue with Spanish language channels. It may be hard to believe, but there are people living in the US that speak other languages and there's nothing wrong with that. I can't believe that in 2010 we still have the mentality that if you live in America, you should speak English and nothing else. Speaking more then one language is an educational and social accomplishment. The fact that we have people of different cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities is what makes this country great. We need to celebrate those differences, not denounce them. Ok, now that I'm off that rant, I agree that there are a lot of networks that are basically the same, with similar programming, but Univison is unique and it provides a type of programming that other channels do not offer.

I don't think that there are any unnecessary channels as market forces will remove or end any channels that aren't getting good ratings and I have a remote that works if I don't like what's on.not true - the cable/satellite providers always sell their programming in "tiered packages" instead of "ala carte" - in other words I can't pick and choose which channels I want; I have to buy the entire tier if I want to get a particular channel - even if NO ONE watches some of those channels, many people are paying from them.

for example, I can't get the Gameshow Network unless I buy the high-end sports package with 20 redundant sports channels and multiple golf channels that no one would ever watch.

and every tier package tier that I do pay for, at least half of those channels are useless ones that no one would ever watch - and no matter how much I complain to my cable provider, the FCC, my congressman or my neighbor, it is not going to change any time soon.

Yep,that's true^^^^^.And it's the reason there no longer is any true competiton between most tv stations.Or in other words why the majority of tv stations are useless.

Yep that's what Comcast made me get when I wanted the NFL Network....a bunch of worthless sports channels that I would never watch.
