There are have been many updates on this old legend, but nothing concrete about her disappearance in the past.

Actually Nikumaroro/Gardner Island was always where they thought that she had disappeared. If the island wasn't so remote this "mystery" would have been solved many years ago, IMHO.

Obviously it's still circumstantial until the DNA tests come back, but this seems to be the strongest evidence yet.

I always felt she either ditched her plane into the ocean or crash-landed on an island. I never bought the conspiracy theories that she was on a government mission and/or was captured by the Japanese; those "explanations" always seemed far-fetched and stunk of WWII propaganda.

Ric Gillespie has been trying to prove his theories for over 20 years. UM fans should remember him from an early 90's episode of UM that featured a segment on Amelia. Gillespie's findings from back then (which included the tattered remains of a shoe and airplane parts) were scrutinized by Earhart experts and found to be bunk. Gillespie had an "explanation" for every inconsistency found with his evidence. And nothing came of it. I guess I should applaud Gillespie and his team for not giving up on solving this mystery, but every time he finds some sort of evidence, he hails it as THE missing piece of the Earhart puzzle. Then you never hear anything about it again. Hopefully this time will be different.
