If you buy your DVDs online, how early do you pre-order them? Does anybody order right after they are listed on Amazon.com?

If I do pre-order, it's always about 2 weeks before the release date. I like to make sure the product is actually coming out and that cover art etc is provided.

A very good question. I usually preorder mine a week before it is released.

Any pre-orders I have done were usually no more than a week before the release date. Sometimes not until the Sunday of the week they were being released. I'm more patient now and wait to get a bigger discount in the months after a set is released.

It depends on the set. If it's a set I know will be hard to find in retail stores I'll pre order it right away. If I see a set I want at a very good discount several weeks before release date I'll pre order it then. There's really no set rule I follow for pre ordering.

I never pre-order DVD's, it makes no sense to me to do that. Pre-ordering does not get the product to you any sooner, it ships on the release date regardless of how early it's ordered. Pre-ordering can also be risky and exposes the buyer to two potential possibilities, the release date could be delayed or the product cancelled altogether. So I take no risks and usually order a day or two before the release date, with some DVD's I wait and read consumer reviews before I order.

Whilst your points are valid, I always feel by pre-ordering, Amazon can gauge how many they'll sell - and if that number is big, they'll discount the price early. Economies of scale and all that. Plus if it is a popular title, you're basically reserving and ensuring you get your copy as soon as possible. Each to their own though. I only pre-order titles I feel I should show support for... ie the ones from smaller companies like Shout Factory.

It depends on the release date and whether the title will available in retail stores. DVD sets of older TV shows sometimes don't show up in a lot of physical retail locations so I usually I'll preorder those sets whenever I find out about the upcoming release.
