Movie Reviews: Yogi Bear


There’s barely a kind, friendly word from any leading critic about the big-screen version of Yogi Bear.

Here are some of the descriptors:




Mike Hale in the New York Times: “misbegotten”

Dan Kois in the Washington Post: “Uninspired studio product”

Ty Burr in the Boston Globe: “a frenetic, unfunny mix of action, romance, dud dialogue, and icky things popping out of the screen.”




But Yogi does have at least one of the major newspaper critics on his side.


Mick Lasalle in the San Francisco Chronicle writes:

“This is a cute movie, a kid’s movie, and a rather good one. The computer-generated bears are adorable — it’s come to this: Computer creations can be adorable — and the movie packs a lot of amusing incidents into a nice, trim 79-minute package.”

i alsway like yougie bear, my favorite hanna barien is top cat. i wouldn't mind seeing it turned into live action moive. i heard their making a hong kong phoeey moive.

What Next...Huckleberry Hound with the voice of Jason Lee as Huck or to get even MORE obscure...Loopy de Loop with the voice of Steve Martin as Loopy?!

I haven't seen it, nor do I plan to. In fact, I haven't gone to a movie in over
five years. Our little town doesn't even have a movie theatre anymore! But,
I have seen the trailers; and I have to say Dan Aykroyd's is the worst imitation of Yogi's voice that I've ever heard (including Gil Mack's on the old
Little Golden Records in 1959). Justin Timberlake is passable as Boo Boo, though. But anyone would fare better to see "Hey There, It's Yogi Bear"
(1964), Yogi's real big screen debut. Starring the voices of Daws Butler and
Don Messick, it also features the singing voice of James Darren--and the
title song is written by (believe it or not) David Gates, later of Bread! It's a
musical, with a pretty good plot. Oh, and the legendary Mel Blanc gives a
great performance as the villain. Check it out.

It looks like a cute movie to me.

To me Yogi and Boo Boo are only themselves when they're voiced by Don Messick and Daws Butler. So I'll give this movie a pass.

They got the voices RIGHT?? Sure, if you think Yogi talks like Rodney
Dangerfield! (He doesn't! Daws Butler loosely based Yogi's voice on Art
Carney's Ed Norton character on The Honeymooners.) Justin Timberlake's Boo Boo was passable (but not as good as Don Messick's).
But Dan Aykroyd was totally miscast as Yogi (from the trailer that I saw).
I'll take "Hey There, It's Yogi Bear" (1964), in which the REAL Yogi made his
big screen debut, anytime over this CG imposter. But maybe the fact that
the film bombed will put an end to the trend toward ruining other classic
hand-drawn cartoons with more CG animated versions. Nah! Probably not.

That's True...maybe Dan Aykrod will get another Razzie to match his Razz in 1991 for "Nothing But Trouble"...And I'd rather watch the latter...then watch "Rocky Horror" (For some reason, I would watch "Nothing But Trouble" then "Rocky Horror")!

The voices weren't perfect but they weren't that bad. It's still in the top ten. And it is a kid's movie.
