benjamoon 12-08-2010, 05:32 PM TV Land is OVEREXPOSING Hot in Cleveland
Shocking, so unlike TV Land to do. I'm fine with stuff leading up to the season premiere but if they were planning that, they shouldn't have had it on Thanksgiving. Plus isn't it a little early to be having a sort-of "best of" marathon?
It's popular, but it's not that popular. They're treating it like its an iconic show that ran for a decade
LUNCH 12-08-2010, 05:52 PM TVLand has turned into a joke.Hopefully channels like ME-TV and Antenna TV will put them out of business along with all the other useless Viacom channels.
Rezny@gmail.com 12-08-2010, 07:29 PM TVLand has turned into a joke.Hopefully channels like ME-TV and Antenna TV will put them out of business along with all the other useless Viacom channels.A joke which at one time ,a long time ago,WAS funny, but ISN'T anymore.TVLand should be changed to "Modern TVLand".It sure isn't the way it USED to be.
Pavan 12-08-2010, 07:42 PM Not that I agree with their direction, but why do they have to rename their channel to "Modern TV Land?" The name TV Land doesn't have anything "classic" in it. We still are getting classic TV for most of the schedule (minus primetime).
retrofan05 12-08-2010, 11:46 PM Replacing Andy Griffith with Married with Children on the weekends was just a bizarre move, especially since it will now be following Bewitched. I would have rather seen them replace an hour of Sanford & Son with Married with Children. Maybe at 8? It seems like a better fit.
I think Married With Children would be nice in primetime between Sanford and Son and Everybody Loves Raymond. ELR is extremely over-exposed (4 episodes most weeknights and tons on the weekends with no repeats!). I think they are trying to scale Andy Griffith back, like they have done with Gunsmoke- it used to be one of their highest rated shows and aired a lot, but now it only airs like 4x a week at 12PM.
I agree, they are crazy over Hot in Cleveland. It was alright. I do appreciate them going for scripted programming instead of reality shows, though....that seems to be what they are going for now. My prediction is that Hot in Cleveland does well, but not as great as in the summer, and Retired at 35 bombs.
I probably won't be watching them, as hopefully I'll soon have MeTV and Antenna TV for older shows.
jasonbigley 12-16-2010, 12:45 PM Ten episodes of Married With Children In A Row? You gotta be kidding me.
Twelve episodes of The Nanny On Sundays? Ridiculous!
Its not that TVLand is airing more modern shows, but a lot of what they are airing is being very redundant!
Off subject, but I have noticed radio stations doing the same thing lately. They have a radio station where I work that they play all the time and I am so tired of hearing the same songs over and over again.
Pavan 12-16-2010, 03:56 PM TV LAND’S “HOT IN CLEVELAND” HONORED WITH TWO
Screen Actors Guild AWARDS® NOMINATIONS
Network’s First Original Sitcom Scores Nominations For
Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series And
Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor in a Comedy Series – Betty White
New York, NY, December 16, 2010 -- TV Land’s very first original sitcom “Hot in Cleveland,” received two nominations for the upcoming 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, it was announced today from the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. “Hot in Cleveland” is the network’s critically-acclaimed hit and cable’s #1 sitcom starring beloved actresses Valerie Bertinelli (“One Day at a Time”), Jane Leeves (“Frasier”), Wendie Malick (“Just Shoot Me”) and recent Emmy® Award-winner, Betty White (“The Golden Girls”).
The sitcom is nominated this year in two categories including: Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series – Betty White.
“’Hot in Cleveland’ is lightning in a bottle with these four fabulous women,” says Larry W. Jones, president, TV Land. “They are truly making modern classic TV history. Everyone here at TV Land is so proud.”
“Hot in Cleveland” revolves around three fabulous best friends from LA – novelist Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli), eye-brow archer to the stars Joy Scroggs (Jane Leeves) and former soap star Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) – who find their lives changed forever when their plane, headed for Paris, makes an unexpected landing. When the friends discover that life is better for them and that they are hot in Cleveland, they decide to stay. Starting over together, they rent a house that happens to come with a very opinionated caretaker (Betty White).
Filmed in front of a live studio audience, “Hot in Cleveland” is executive produced by Emmy® Award-winner Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions and is helmed by Emmy® Award-winning Suzanne Martin (“Frasier,” “Ellen”) serving as executive producer, show runner and writer. Lynda Obst also serves as executive producer.
The17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live coast to-coast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at 8 p.m. (ET), 7 p.m. (CT), 6 p.m. (MT) and 5 p.m. (PT) from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
rodwayne 12-21-2010, 12:10 PM Not that I agree with their direction, but why do they have to rename their channel to "Modern TV Land?" The name TV Land doesn't have anything "classic" in it. We still are getting classic TV for most of the schedule (minus primetime). You might be right, but T.V.LAND used to be about classic until they just have become useless!I'm sure evreyone loves theses so-called classics like EVERYONE LOVES RAYMOND(I for one never have);HOME IMPROVEMENT(How does TIM ALLEN keep geting work?!);MARRIED WITH CHILDREN(At least it was on in the 80s),and I can go on and on,but you get the point! As I once said, things aren't classics just because 5 people liked them,or some rigged up ratings system says that I like this show. Why doesn't T.V.LAND just do us all a favor, stop the pretense of showing the one or two classics they have left, and just show all of their new bit, because one person won't be around to see the train crash waiting to happen, and if others was smart, they would soon follow!
Pavan 12-22-2010, 05:43 PM TV LAND BOASTS HIGHEST-RATED YEAR IN PRIMETIME SINCE 2007, SCORING DOUBLE-DIGIT GAINS ACROSS KEY DEMOS
Cable's #1 Sitcom "Hot in Cleveland" and Network's Highest-Rated Acquisition "Everybody Loves Raymond" Advance TV Land to Impressive Gains
New York, NY, December 22, 2010 -- For 2010 to date (12/28/09 to 12/19/10), TV Land is pacing to earn its highest-rated year in primetime since 2007 with its target Adults 25-54 audience and among Women 25-54 since 2006. LUNCH 12-23-2010, 01:51 PM TVLand and Viacom who wrote the article can spin and twist all the facts they want. The fact is they have lost so many viewers, and are not getting many new ones.Very heavily edited versions of shows like Bewitched and The Andy Griffith show are still getting far better ratings than any of the more modern tv shows in their line-up, the only exception being Hot In Cleveland.
Pavan 12-23-2010, 04:00 PM LUNCH, it is a fact that Everybody Loves Raymond is doing well. That is modern. TV Land had their best year in primetime since 2007, so obviously something is working for them. They are going in a different direction, which I am sure many don't agree with, but it is working for them (at least in primetime).
LUNCH, it is a fact that Everybody Loves Raymond is doing well. That is modern. TV Land had their best year in primetime since 2007, so obviously something is working for them. They are going in a different direction, which I am sure many don't agree with, but it is working for them (at least in primetime).I don't mind the show, but how can it keep doing well? For 9 months, at least 2 hours a night, six days a week? I just don't understand how nobody is getting sick of it.
They treat ELR like it's their only non-original show. They need more....why not try to get MWC regularly? That '70s Show from TeenNick? Share Frasier with Lifetime or Seinfeld with TBS, those may fit? If they want modern, fine with me, but they need more variety at night.
LUNCH 12-23-2010, 04:57 PM LUNCH, it is a fact that Everybody Loves Raymond is doing well. That is modern. TV Land had their best year in primetime since 2007,
I'm certainly no expert, but notice how it says they had their best year in primetime since '2007'.They are not mentioning how well their prime time line-up did before 2007 when they showed the older shows. It seems to me the older shows did alot better for them in primetime, but they deliberately do not include that in any of their press releases.--TVLand,when they had an all or mostly classic line-up,less commercials,no original programs etc. used to be one of the most successful cable tv stations period, even beating ESPN.That's not the case anymore.IMO they just want to air programs that cost them next to nothing as filler in between commercials.
retrofan05 12-23-2010, 05:28 PM LUNCH, where are you sources? Do you really have solid proof that TV Land was more successful before than it is now or is that just what you want to believe? You act as though TV Land has some conspiracy against the classic shows. The truth is, TV Land is going to air and promote the shows that get the best ratings. As of now that is Everybody Loves Raymond and Hot in Cleveland. If the classic shows truly brought in the best ratings you'd be seeing and hearing about them a lot more. TV stations are highly competitive and if TV Land wants to stay successful and on the air, they have to air what brings in the best ratings.
LUNCH 12-23-2010, 06:00 PM retrofan05,as I mentioned I'm no expert but as far as I know TVLand is not even in the top 20 of cable stations anymore.I don't think they have some type of as you mentioned 'conspiracy' against classic shows.I just think they are just a bunch of liars, and that's the only reason I originally commented on this thread.Classic tv shows are just as popular now as they always have been. That's why there are stations like Antenna-TV,ME-TV,RTV,Encore Westerns etc. Not to mention so many classic movie stations which often appeal to a similair audience.
Pavan 12-23-2010, 06:51 PM I'm certainly no expert, but notice how it says they had their best year in primetime since '2007'.They are not mentioning how well their prime time line-up did before 2007 when they showed the older shows.
They said 2007 because the ratings are the best since then. And they are doing a lot better in the younger demos than they have ever done. However, their target is still 25-54 and Hot in Cleveland has done the best EVER for the network in that demo (that includes Bonanza and Andy Griffith) and total viewers as well (the series premiere I believe was their highest rated show ever overall). They have certainly had their fair share of bombs, mostly original reality series. But this is all in primetime.
They still show classic TV during the day and overnight, so who really cares what they air in primetime. If you want more classic TV, Antenna TV and Me-TV are the way to go. You won't see them in the top 20 ratings either. TV Land has never been a top 20 TV network. They have never been one among 18-49 or 25-54. That's what counts. They never beat ESPN in those EVER. And programs that cost nothing? Hot in Cleveland is THEIR production. Everybody Loves Raymond was pretty expensive, but they are sharing it with TBS. Still way more expensive than their last current classic TV pick-up I Dream of Jeannie. So, I don't understand your logic at all. I think you're just upset about the lack of classic TV in primetime, which is fine, but don't make stuff up. They get more ad money with original series in primetime.
Not sure how they a bunch of liars when they clearly changed their direction in primetime. Just like how Nick at Nite changed their direction about 5-6 years ago, which was more of a drastic change. More shows are coming in the coming years on TV Land primetime to go along with Raymond. Nick at Nite's number one show is George Lopez and it has aired for 3+ years now in the same slot and it never fails them.
Who really cares what they do anymore with classic shows? In the next year AntennaTV and MeTV will replace TV Land for classic TV, IMO, and will be better than TVL ever was. Once those come to your area if your cable company doesn't carry them you can use an antenna if you're in range.
ETA: M*A*S*H was huge for them in 2007, so that probably greatly helped primetime for them back then.
Hot in Cleveland marathon has been added on January 1st (New Years) from 8pm-11pm followed by the special at 11pm [like we haven't already seen it].
Hillbillies expires at the end of December, correct?
GolfDude 12-27-2010, 07:36 AM what was with the 1 time airing of home improvement on Nick at Nite This am from 5-6 AM?
Pavan 12-27-2010, 12:53 PM Home Improvement airs every Sunday night (early Monday) on Nick at Nite from 5-6am. See Nick at Nite December thread.
Pavan 01-05-2011, 11:47 AM Not sure how long this is for, but it is at least for a week:

11:00am & 11:30am The Nanny (replaces Bewitched)
These are encores of the 1am airings. Bewitched will remain on weekend afternoon blocks from 2-4pm.

Keeping my fingers crossed that someday they'll be a network like RTN or Antenna TV on Direct TV and Dish for people who can't pick up anything with an antenna.

I thought The Nanny didn't do well? That will be airing between Jeannie and Gunsmoke...weird. I guess it is only a matter of time until it joins Hogan's Heroes on the "we're going to pull it and even though we have the rights, we're never airing it again" list.
CommonTater: I know it can be frusturating with Dish and the subchannels... Hopefully they'll carry them someday.
tvparadise 01-05-2011, 01:35 PM I don't think they have the rights to Hogan's Heroes anymore. The full episodes have been pulled from tvland.com and I remember reading back on the old TV Land boards that it expired in Nov. 2010 with an option to extend it for one year to Nov 2011. It looks like they didn't opt for that extension. I think Leave it to Beaver is the only 'classic' they still have the rights to and don't air.
With this potential Nanny thing at 11am and Boston Legal coming back at 8am next month, it makes me wonder if they might have a new direction planned for mornings.

It looks like it is gone...what a shame, but not unexpected. I wonder if they are finally starting to phase the classic shows out....they are getting aggressive with original shows (remember, they are considering more original sitcoms) and Andy Griffith is leaving weekends. They might want to distance themselves from older shows that aren't going great. I guess they could plug Home Improvement in to mornings to go along with The Nanny.
Doesn't Friends come this year? I know it was acquired for NAN, but that was back before Nick took them over. There was discussion of it going straight to TV Land, IIRC.
Pavan 01-05-2011, 03:37 PM Friends was always slated for Fall 2011 on Nick at Nite and then also airing on TV Land in Fall 2012. Not sure if this has changed, but I will know soon.

When was that ever said? The Nanny does great on N@N and seems to be doing well on TVL as well

Really? They couldn't have bumped Gunsmoke into one of the three Bonanza airings and aired The Nanny at Noon? Having I Dream of Jeannie air in a block without Bewitched is like having cake without ice cream. LOL

I'm pretty sure it was just in the 8 PM airing that it didn't do well. Hence why we are still seeing 10 episodes in a row Saturday and Sunday. I like The Nanny, but there was no reason to remove to episodes of Bewitched to accommodate it.

ABC DAYTIME AND TV LAND JOIN FORCES TO CREATE
AN UNPRECEDENTED CROSS-OVER EVENT
ABC’S SUSAN LUCCI, MICHAEL E. KNIGHT AND DARNELL WILLIAMS GUEST STAR ON “HOT IN CLEVELAND” AND TV LAND’S WENDIE MALICK GUEST STARS ON “ALL MY CHILDREN” CONTINUING THE STORYLINE ESTABLISHED IN “HOT IN CLEVELAND’S” FIRST SEASON
Pasadena, CA – January 5, 2011 – ABC Daytime and TV Land have joined forces to create an unprecedented network event where characters from “All My Children” and “Hot in Cleveland” cross-over to continue a storyline established on last season’s “Hot in Cleveland.” The story revolves around Wendie Malick’s character, Victoria Chase, and her industry-nemesis, Susan Lucci. The two-part “Hot in Cleveland” episodes will air on TV Land on February 16th and February 23rd at 10PM ET/PT and the “All My Children” episode will air on ABC at 1PM ET/12PM PT on February 24th.
“All My Children’s” Emmy Award®-winners Susan Lucci, Michael E. Knight and Darnell Williams will appear as themselves on “Hot in Cleveland” and Golden Globe®-winner Wendie Malick as her “Hot in Cleveland” character Victoria Chase will appear on “All My Children” as Gertie, a housekeeper who ends up moonlighting as a bartender at Confusion after Erica Kane fires her.
“We are thrilled Victoria Chase will join the cast of ‘All My Children’ – there are very few actresses who could pull off a dual role performance as BOTH a maid and bartender. We hope she is up to the challenge," teased Julie Carruthers, executive producer, "All My Children." Brian Frons, president daytime, Disney ABC Television Network joked, “There is only room for one Erica Kane in Pine Valley and Victoria Chase will unfortunately find that out the hard way.” Frons went on to say, “This is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of both shows with similar demos and we expect each other’s viewers to follow from one show to the next.”
“We’re so happy that Victoria Chase will finally get to show ‘All My Children’ fans why she is a soap superstar,” responds Larry W. Jones, president, TV Land. “We’re so excited to partner with ‘All My Children’ to bring to life this classic TV form when television worlds collide.”
“Hot in Cleveland” revolves around three fabulous best friends from Los Angeles – novelist Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli), eye-brow archer to the stars, Joy Scroggs (Jane Leeves) and former soap star Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) – who find their lives changed forever when their plane, headed for Paris, makes an unexpected landing. When the friends discover that life is better for them since they are hot in Cleveland, they decide to stay.
Season one of “Hot in Cleveland” will be available on DVD on January 11th, just in time to relive all ten hilarious episodes from the first season before the second season kicks off. The two-disc set is loaded with uproarious bonus material including: the original full-length pilot, bloopers, wardrobe featurette, We Love Our Age featurette, a set tour, Victoria’s (Malick) full-length Japanese Lady Pants commercial and more.
Entertainment Weekly and TV Land have named Susan Lucci one of the Top 50 Television Icon’s of all Time for her portrayal of the legendary Erica Kane, the sexy, sassy, beautiful “woman you love to hate!” In May 1999, all of America stood and cheered when she won the Emmy Award® for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and in 2005 she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Three-time Emmy Award®-winner Michael E. Knight created the role of Tad Martin on “All My Children” in 1983, when he was better known as “Tad the Cad.” Today, Tad is less of a cad, but ever more a fan favorite and respected actor. Emmy Award®-winner Darnell Williams made a triumphant return to the show in January 2008, after a 20-year absence, to reprise the fan-favorite role of the presumed deceased Jessie Hubbard.
“All My Children” celebrated its 40th anniversary on January 5th, 2010. The program has successfully maintained its popularity and continues to be one of daytime’s most compelling dramas. “All My Children” took home the 1998 Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, the third time the show received this top honor, having also garnered the award in 1994 and 1992. In 2004 the show also received its third consecutive Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series Writing, its third Writers Guild Award and its fourth GLAAD Media Award in March 2007.
Created by Agnes Nixon, “All My Children” premiered on the ABC Television Network on January 5, 1970, as a half-hour show; seven years later it expanded to an hour. Julie Hanan Carruthers is executive producer with David Kreizman and Donna Swajeski as co-head writers. “All My Children” is produced in Los Angeles and airs MONDAY-FRIDAY (1:00-2:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

That's cool. :) I wish I had the TV Land channel so I could watch. I wonder if TV Land will put it on their website to watch?

I wish they would have put The Nanny from 9AM-10AM and replaced the 2 shows that are already airing in the afternoon. It would have transitioned well between Boston Legal and IDOJ. This doesn't give me a good feeling...we've seen what happened to 3 other classics last year...they went from daily, to marathon/block, then were pulled in April and never seen again, even when they still had the rights to air 2 of them for months after and still have the rights for one. Just saying...

Yeah 9-10 would have been perfect. I mean, even though The Nanny is a much newer show, it would fit so well with both Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.
DSfan 01-07-2011, 12:15 AM A bit off topic at the moment, but does anybody find it sort of counter-intuitive that TV Land announces who will be WINNING (!!) certain awards before the actual broadcast? I don't see the point in it, really. Are they lacking so much confidence in their award show that they are hoping to pull in viewers who hear Cosby Show and Family Ties will be honored?

That's not it at all. TV Land has always done this. This awards show is not like the Emmys or Golden Globes where there are always new actors and new shows to compete. These are awards for shows of years past and the vast majority of the honors are special awards like the Legend award. It's not about the competition to win something. Its whole drawing factor is that they have successfully reunited many classic TV casts to pay tribute to them.

Yeah, I know they've always done it that way. I get what you mean about it not being a competition but wouldn't it still be more exciting for the viewer to watch this LIVE and be SURPRISED as to the Cosby Show and Family Ties casts being reunited? That's sort of what I mean, if that makes sense. But I do understand exactly what you said.
