View Full Version : 'All in the Family' is Too Dated to Enjoy Today? Brian Damage 12-04-2010, 10:14 PM Even though All in the Family was a true groundbreaking and at times controversial sitcom, a lot of the topics are really dated. Do you think AITF is a bit too dated for new viewers to really enjoy? Kasey 12-05-2010, 02:45 PM While I think that young people seeing it today for the first time would not get the President Nixon/Ford/Carter references, etc., the relationship humour is timeless and not really dated. TVFactFan 12-05-2010, 02:52 PM Even though All in the Family was a true groundbreaking and at times controversial sitcom, a lot of the topics are really dated. Do you think AITF is a bit too dated for new viewers to really enjoy? The fact that it's dated so make it easier for people to enjoy the show. Retro4Life 12-05-2010, 02:55 PM If you can get past the clothing styles, 70's lingo and references as Kasey mentioned (which discerning viewers SHOULD BE able to), NO, it is most definitely not too dated. Dealing with issues like homosexuality, abortion, rape, foreign wars, inflation, government corruption, unemployment, the Arab/Israeli conflict, racism and many others, this show is as relevant today as it ever was. Dr. Thong 12-05-2010, 03:34 PM Retro is right. Think about it, just substitute Iraq for Vietnam, Bush for Nixon or Obama for Carter and it's as relevant today as it ever was. It sad that we haven't evolved much as human beings since those days of the seventies. In fact, if anything we've regressed and lost sight of what's really important. OH Nuts! 12-06-2010, 03:41 PM Not at all. Many of the topics dealt with poignant problems related to the human condition. The show can also be enjoyed as a classic - savored for its groundbreaking and clever approach to controversial issues. biffbronson 12-06-2010, 07:55 PM There were yet more issues that could be added to the list, like gun control, marital infidelity (the "Miss America" remarks from a married man toward a young woman in Kelsey's), and Mike's agnosticism -- and wasn't there an ep where Gloria wanted Mike to get a vasectomy?? All of these things remain in the public eye and can be considered timeless. McGillicuddy 12-06-2010, 08:00 PM If it is "too dated", as you say, Maude would be also. I find both shows nostalgic. MickeyMac 12-07-2010, 07:26 PM The fact that this show would be considered dated is obscured. It captures that time perfectly, and like all classic shows, its never dated. Beautifully said. 704Hauser 03-08-2011, 10:13 AM AITF may have premiered 20 years before I was born, but I find it very funny and interesting to watch, so no, I don't find it dated. I know my history quite well so I get most of the references. Vince53 03-10-2011, 12:50 AM I'm watching it for the first time, and I think it's hilarious. biffbronson 03-10-2011, 09:28 PM I sort of envy you for being able to enjoy these episodes for the first time. But someone mentioned "if you can get past the hairstlyes, clothing etc.". I always find it exciting and nostalgic to look at those. I as a child (born in 65) when AITF was in its heyday, but my mother and aunts wore alot of the same fashions and hair do's. I guess we have our own perspective on watching old sitcoms. I guess the 50's s/coms leave me a little empty cuz I have no point of reference for anything in them. They also tended to be lightweight and fluffy and warm and fuzzy. But the issues addressed in AITF are the same issues as a child I remember all the grown-ups in my life heatedly debating and protesting and voting and carrying on about. (I grew up in a commie-pinko liberal household ;) ). Having said that, I guess I can understand why the younger generations might not "get" it. But for those of us who do, I am sure glad it is still in syndication. TVFactFan 03-20-2011, 11:25 AM This is my first post as I am brand new to the community. They don't make shows like AITF anymore. Other shows of the '50's, 60's, 70's, 80's etc, could be considered dated, also. The more technology has changed society, particularly in the last decade and a half, like cell phone use in public, I think these "period sit-coms", provide an escape to the past. When was the last time you watched a show and you thought, "why don't they use their cell?" or why don't they go on the internet to find out something?" monandwes 03-20-2011, 06:35 PM Welcome to the Board and hope to see more of you. I am still exploring the message boards and there are sitcoms listed that I had completely forgotten about (Dear John, The Courtship of Eddies Father, Chico and The Man:) ) I can still hear and sing-a-long with the theme song to Chico and The Man. We're still dealing with many of the issues on AITF. Sitcom Collector 03-22-2011, 08:16 AM Not to insult die-hard fans of the show, but Norman Lear had one purpose in mind for AITF: to air his political and social beliefs on national television. I suspect if it had a different cast the idea would have flopped. But a strong cast is what made AITF rise above the others. It's watching thier performances today that make the show worth watching. The politics became overshadowed. When I catch AITF today its to watch O'Conner. Stapelton, and Reiner, I couldn't give a flip about the politics. I don't think that is what Lear intended...but that is the result nonetheless. biffbronson 03-23-2011, 05:42 PM I think you make a very valid point -- the excellence of the cast coupled with good scripts made for a very enjoyable experience. You're probably right regarding Lear's motivations, but regardless the end product was really good. JustJim70118 05-21-2011, 04:22 AM Absolutely not. If anything, it's even more relevant. It's real life in many ways, still. I can't think of any current sitcoms that even come close in terms of addressing political, racial, and other controversial issues. It's like we've returned to "Leave it to Beaver". Dr. Thong 05-21-2011, 05:02 AM If I catch a rerun on TV Land, I still laugh. That to me is the definition of a classic. Whereas some other seventies shows that I liked as a kid don't hold up in the same way. HelloLarry 05-21-2011, 09:29 AM While there are many topical references in the show that may trap it as a product of it's time, we are still dealing with many of the issues in 2011 that AITF dealt with in the 70s. The players have changed, the names have changed but the games are still there. We still have many of the same problems in this country. The place where AITF succeeds (and some of you alluded to this already) is in that at it's core, it really is about family, relationships, fears, etc. It has a depth to it that after you strip away the many racial, sociological, and political layers makes it feel alive. We see a little of ourselves in each of these people so we can relate to the many experiences they have. They may be different in 2011 but at their core they are the same. If I were to watch an episode of the Brady Bunch or Partridge Family (for as much as I love these shows) right now at my age (41) for the first time, I probably would think they were lame. However I have that nostalgia factor with these shows that brings me comfort and good memories so it is a totally different experience. With AITF, the humor is always fresh and genuinely funny because it comes from the core of the people that the show is about. TVFactFan 05-21-2011, 02:59 PM AITF is a classic but not a great escape show much like Good Times and Maude. The Norman Lear shows that wasn' too serious and are great escapes of reality were the Jeffersons and Sanford and Son AITF wasn't as serious as Maude but not as fun to watch as the Jeffersons Dan Fielding 05-26-2011, 01:15 PM If AITF is dated then so is Seinfeld! How many episodes of Seinfeld would have been solved if they had used a cell phone? In particular the one where they keep going into the wrong theater. My 13 year old son thinks AITF is hilarious. We both call it the "turr-let" Dr. Thong 05-26-2011, 04:09 PM All In The Family is timeless. Some shows from my youth haven't aged well, but AITF still gets a good laugh or two out of me if I happen to catch it. IF a person has no income, IT IS COSTING NOTHING as either Medicaid would apply (except in the stupid red states with idiot gov's who refuse to expand it and obey the law) OR in instant subsidies off the price, basically allowing it for even cheaper. It takes a family of 4 to make more than 60,000 ACTUAL dollars (and that means AFTER deductions and any cost of doing business for self-employed) before one has to pay. Ever leave a hospital and need follow-up care that an emergency room visit doesn't cover later on? I'm talking about a single person who is unemployed without kids and no medical issues who doesn't need to pay for something that is considered a "JUST IN CASE" when they can use that money for food ILuvCarolBurnett 06-10-2014, 02:47 AM I live in Los Angeles, and about five years ago or so (I am guessing) the CBS affiliate here, KCBS, was running reruns of AITF on Saturdays & Sundays at 5:30 PM. Just one episode the lead into the evening news. I hadn't seen the show in quite some time. It didn't last long, maybe a year, or not even that long. I crossed paths with someone one day who worked at the station and asked them, "Hey, what happened to AITF on the weekends?" They said the show was pulled over several angry calls from viewers. So that answers your question at least here in LA. Then MY tax dollars are paying for that irresponsible person's healthcare. No unemployed person should have a ADDED BILL to their finances Do you think Archie would have wanted to pay a JUST IN CASE bill when he was laid off???? LittleRickyII 07-03-2014, 11:20 AM No unemployed person should have a ADDED BILL to their finances Do you think Archie would have wanted to pay a JUST IN CASE bill when he was laid off???? Learn the law. An unemployed person would fall under the income threshold and is not required to purchase insurance. Crusinforabrusin 09-10-2016, 09:06 PM All In The Family is not dated at all. Dude , if you just leave him alone there will be no reason to kick TvFactFan off the site. You answered his comment with a snarky reply and you got one in return. If you don't want him answering you like that , stop posting stupid answers to his comment and leave him alone. If he is bothering you this much just BLOCK him. Crusinforabrusin 09-11-2016, 05:30 AM Aside from weirdo gloria, the show has always been watchable I never thought Gloria was weird , but I do regard her as a highly annoying character. The most annoying thing about Gloria is how she constantly whines and complains to Michael about everything under the sun. The most annoying thing about Gloria is how she constantly whines and complains to Michael about everything under the sun. She came off as mature with all the 3rd grade temper tandrums whenever her father or husband said something she didn't like. The character never seemed to mature during the series opus 09-12-2016, 10:27 PM KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISSY MMMMMM:lol:  ????? tenter 09-12-2016, 10:28 PM ?????
