LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A retelling of the Rapunzel story called "Tangled" will be the last fairy tale made by Disney Animation for the foreseeable future, the California studio said.

"Films and genres do run a course," Pixar Animation Studios chief Ed Catmull said in a Los Angeles Times report.

Catmull said he is encouraging filmmakers to push creative boundaries and develop more relevant shows.

"If you say to somebody, 'You should be doing fairy tales,' it's like saying, 'Don't be risky,'" Catmull said. "We're saying, 'Tell us what's driving you.'"

The "princess movies" have a limited shelf life and cater to young girls, the report said.

"Tangled" will be released Wednesday, and it received a major makeover to make it more attractive to male viewers, Catmull said.

The name was changed from Rapunzel to the more gender-neutral "Tangled" and the studio's advertising features the film's co-star, Flynn Rider.

Last year's critically acclaimed production "The Princess and the Frog" was the most poorly performing of Disney's recent fairy tales, and producers said it appealed to too narrow of an audience of "little girls."

John Lasseter, who oversees Disney Animation, noted the studio's heritage, which began with the 1937 debut of its first feature film, "Snow White."

I think this is good (for now). While The Princess and the Frog was a step in the right direction (return to 2D animation), I think getting creative ideas for their movies will give Disney the shot-in-the-arm it deserves.

...Disney can't produce any more "straight" fairy tales. Dreamworks' projects (including the "Shrek" series) are so "hip" and "cool", they often satirize the very ingredients their stories are created from. Disney has tried their "formula" several times, and disappointing box office returns were the result. "The Princess and the Frog" was adapted from a book that wasn't anything like the movie; if Disney hadn't decided to concentrate on making "Tiana" part of their pre-packaged "Princesses" franchise by focusing on "little girls", there might have been a better film. As for the title, I guess Disney figured no one is going to see a movie with "Rapunzel" in the title these days (30 or more years ago, yes)- their research department obviously told them the title has to be "hip" and catchy...like, oh, "Tangled".

Today no one can match the beauty and innocence (and gorgeous animation!) of Snow White, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, etc. No, I don't count those direct-to-DVD sequels - cheapening those classics just to make a quick buck. :mad: :mad: :mad:

so they are stopping production on fairy tale movies, yet aren't going to stop releasing cheap spin-offs and sequels based on their hits?

bad move on their make, although disney's movies in the last 5, 8 years for the exception of toy story for eg haven't been 'hit-worthy' enough.

I guess the next generation of children will have to get their Fairy Tales the old fashioned way. They'll have to read them!

Have stories for Mickey, Donald, or Goofy. This is WAY overdue, there could be a new film for Donald Duck and if it's rated 'PG'...it should say "For Duck Nudity"!:lol: (Ducks were NEVER intended to wear clothes)!

Those movies were fascinating in the past, now they don't have the same effects on the public... for watching "Princess and the frog" at the cinema wasn't the same of watching "Little mermaid" on VHS when I was a kid.

Even so, I'm gonna see Tangled at the cinema :)

I agree. Disney used to produce such great entertainment.Mainly during the 1930s-70s.Now they are just a joke.

i bet you they will concentrate churning out crappy live action movies with hanna montana- if miley cyrus gets on board. ohno:

tbh, i only like their tv series such as duck tales, goof troop, darkwing duck- wasn't really into their feature movies as much, for the exception of say snow white and the 7 dwarves.

I doubt it will be the end the movie is doing very well at the box office.

I wasn't either, I liked the TV Series of "DuckTales", "Darkwing Duck" and the like of the 90's and the only Feature Film of Disney that was a cartoon I really like is "The Three Caballeros"!
