View Full Version : Problems with IDOJ DVDs?

Anyone here have issues with their I Dream of Jeanie DVDs. I bought Seasons 3-4 on DVD at Amazon a few months ago when they were on sale for $14.99 each. When I received them, ALL the discs were foggy on the bottom. I tried cleaning them up, but the fog just comes back again. Weird, I know!

What's odd is that all seasons played perfectly on my Sony DVD player at home despite having all that foggy or cloudy substance on the bottom of the discs. They even played fine on my computer. However, when I played them on my friend's DVD player, they were having issues. Some were skipping really badly, while some DVDs refused to play at all.

I know it's great that they work on my DVD player, but still. This shouldn't happen, especially when I buy something new. I didn't bother exchanging it because since BOTH seasons had that cloudy substance on the discs, I'm quite sure that I'll just end up with the same problem with the replacement sets.

I don't understand. My Bewitched DVDs are in perfect shape when I bought them. IDOJ, on the other hand, is all fogged/clouded up. They're both manufactured by Sony. Why the lack of quality control on IDOJ??

Anyone else have the same issue on their discs??

Well finally someone else has discovered a problem I noticed over a year ago, I never started a thread about it, the problem you describe comes from long time storage and the clear plastic cases that sony/paramount used at the time....I first noticed it with Hazel and Father Knows Best, I was shocked and very upset when I discovered it....I do not keep my DVD's near moisture, but if you take the dvd out of the case and rub your finger on the case you will feel a moisture type smear, now the discs can be cleaned, but once they get the fog, it actually comes back!!....I did not have any problems playing them, but started either replacing the cases with my own self bought black slim line cases or you should keep the silk screen disc face down, meaning store them the opposite way so the clear plastic isn't on the recorded side....good luck!

So how is this happening? Is the plastic case touching the recorded side?

Like I said, I have three seasons of "Bewitched" and they all are perfectly clean on the bottom. The slim cases, however, are slightly different, which explains why there's no fog whatsoever. But why should the type of slim case used for storage be an issue? The bottom of the discs aren't being touched, no?

Wish I could answer the technical science reason, but glide your finger over the case that infected your dvd's, you will see a film type stream, which even if the dvd was not directly touching the case, it was close enough to infect it, that's why I turned all my dvd's upside down that were in that type of case once I discovered it....good luck.....

I have the same issue with my Dick Van Dyke Show DVD's. Some of the discs look terrible on the recorded side with that foggy coating. But the discs play fine in my DVD player, so I don't worry about it. If I tried to wipe off the foggy stuff, it might scratch the recorded surface and then maybe the disc wouldn't play. And there's always a chance the foggy stuff would re-appear. I understand the reason for placing the discs recorded side up inside the case, but I prefer to place them label side up. This is why I dislike those dual sided discs. One of the recorded sides is always exposed.

OK, I can now confirm that the fogged up discs are NOT due to the plastic cases. I just bought "Bewitched" Season 5 and it's using the EXACT same plastic cases as the Jeannie DVDs. And guess what? The discs are in PERFECT shape. No fog whatsoever! So, I think I was initially right in my original post when I said it's quality control issue on Sony's part. Probably a problem in factory when the discs were pressed.

But why all my Bewitched DVDs are in perfect shape, while the Jeannie DVDs are foggy is beyond me! Obviously, Sony has put more care into Bewitched as far as quality control is concerned.

I just ordered Season 2 from Amazon since all the seasons are on sale. Let's see what kind of fog I get in this set....

Well, this is interesting.

Last year when I started this thread, I ordered Seasons 3 and 4 and ended up with fogged discs. Both were ordered from Amazon.

Then shortly after the New Year, I ordered Season 2 from Amazon. The discs were also fogged up, but the fog was not as bad as the Season 3 and 4 discs.

Yesterday, I went to J&R and they had all the Jeannie Seasons for $10.99 each. I used this as an opportunity to complete my Jeannie collection, so I went ahead and bought Seasons 1 and 5. I got home, opened them both up and guess what? NONE of those discs had the fog. They were in PERFECT shape.

Hmm. I'm guessing that Amazon has a bad batch or something. All the Jeannie DVDs from Amazon have the fog but the none of the DVDs from J&R had them. Very interesting!!
