I guess I should exclude shows from before the mid 1980s?, because some shows just age and become undesirable for channels to pick up (example, I Love Lucy was huge in syndication for years but has fizzled out in the past couple of years, or is no longer very viable for syndication, same for The Beverly Hillbillies, etc). If I included 50s-early 80s shows I could go forever, lol. These were popular (maybe not REALLY) and haven't done well in syndication, in recent years that I can think of:

'Dallas', 'Dynasty' and the other prime time soaps failed in syndication because you already knew what was going to happen and the element of surprise was gone.

The Cosby Show,failed in a big way.After they stopped making the show,tv stations paid a fortune for the rights to re-run it,and lost alot of money.Only in recent years has The Cosby show had a small amount of success in reruns.

My memory doesn't go back extremely far, but The Cosby Show was MASSIVE on Nick at Nite from 2002 in to the mid-2000s, I want to say 2006 or 2007, when it was edged out of primetime by Roseanne, Full House, Fresh Prince, etc (90s shows, it got too old for them). Remember when it was nothing but The Cosby Show and Cheers in 2002-2003? Then it moved to TV Land where I think it failed because there were no other 80s sitcoms for it to go along with.

Where did it air before 2002? I keep wanting to say TBS, I know WGN ran it for a long time until this fall.

Mad About You only failed on Nick at Nite and TV Land. Prior to that it had a very healthy, long run in national, off-network syndication. It still airs on some local stations to this day.

Murphy Brown is undoubtedly a true flop in syndication. It has never been a large ratings grabbing in syndication. It flopped on locals and flopped on every cable network it has aired on--- from Lifetime to Nick and TV Land.

Compare that to Roseanne which premiered the same year as Murphy Brown and you can see how much of a flop MB has been in syndication--- Roseanne has continued to air on local stations since it first entered syndication and has been on TBS, Nick at Nite, TV Land and other stations as well since.

Cybill was a pretty popular, top 10 show during it's original run but has been an utter flop in syndication. It never even made it to local stations and flopped on Lifetime. It aired on Oxygen before the network was popular; but was quickly done away with when they started getting an audience for that network.

I am going to have to disagree about Dallas. That has done quite well in syndication, and even though you know whats going to happen, the build ups to each cliffhangers are still exciting (well except towards the end).

actually it was doing pretty good numbers when airing on SOAPNET on the early 2000's until about 05 or 06.

SOAPNET also aired Dynasty and Knot's Landing to decent numbers during the 2000's as well. Falcon Crest also aired but was less popular on the network.

Night Court aired quite a long time in syndication at least originally. The same was true of Family Ties and WTB and some other 80's sitcoms. Of course they rarely air in syndication anymore.

Three shows that never really made it were The Hogan Family, Head of the Class and Perfect Strangers. It seems like every channel they air on, they quickly leave.

Wings has done very well in Syndication. Not only was it on Nick ad Nite and TV Land for awhile (where it did respectable numbers) but prior to that it aired on USA NETWORK for a good decade before Nick got their hands on it.

Coach also did VERY WELL in syndication. Not only has it aired on USA Network for a long, long time but it aired on NICK for awhile too and at one point was a pretty big block of nick at nite's schedule. It also still shows up randomly on some local stations.

227 hasn't done too badly either; it used to air on BET and then i think TV ONE; and it's now showing up on GMC.

In fact Ellen is the only one of those shows i'd say really, truly flopped in syndication. It didn't do well on A&E or Lifetime. I do wish Logo would pick up the rights to it.

Seems like a lot of 1986 sitcoms did poorlyin syndication. Bummer.

Although Amen (a sitcom that premiered in 1986) has seen resurgence quite a lot in recent years.

It's aired locally (on Chicago's Me-TV), TV One, and on GMC.

A Different World was quite popular on my local stations it was on Ch. 50 (now MyTV 50) for about a good 3-5 years before going to WCIU for another 2-3 years.

Can't say the same about it on cable, though.

Maude- It was Very Popular in it original run, But It never caught on in syndication or a east in the last 15 Years.

And that's really sad. Murphy Brown is 1000 times better than Roseanne. :mad:

The biggest problem w/ Murphy Brown and why it has never done well in off-network syndication (even though Encore Classics has recently picked it up) it that because it tended to be topical (sort of like a sitcom variant of HBO's Newsroom), it in retrospect comes across as extremely dated (especially if you don't immediately understand the context of what's being said).

MTV2 seems to be doing well with Martin and The Wayans Bros.

I have to say that of all those shows, the only ones I have seen are: Ironside, and Our Miss Brooks. Ironside was the only show I saw in the original run.

The only shows that you mentioned that I haven't see are I Married Joan,Mr Peepers Our Miss Brooks, Time Tunnel ,Ben Casey and Dr Kildare.

Hangin With Mr. Cooper - It last aired on Nick at night and haven't been seen since

Bossom Buddies - I don't think its even in syndication anymore

Family Matters - It aired on Nick at Nite years ago, but I haven't seen it in syndication since then

Who's The Boss- It was on TV land in the early 2000s but was removed not long after. Years later , it was on TVGN before it was finally removed from there. I haven't seen it since.
