View Full Version : Countdown for Season 6 dvd
80schild.com 11-06-2010, 12:08 PM Now that we have my least favorite seasons on DVD, i'm pretty pumped about the next releases. Season 6-9 is an entirely different beast than the earlier seasons. Hopefully we'll get bloopers on the next dvd releases, they've got to be in a vault somewhere. Come on season 6!
Ive been checking for a release date cuz i'm dying to know when we can look forward to it! I am thinking May because it is 6 months from now but who knows. I'm ready to start a countdown though!! I have to say tho that I am LOVING season 5!!! I haven't seen most of the eps so they are basically brand new to me which makes me very happy. lol its been an awesome week watching these episodes. I am watching "Crossing the Line" right now!
Jude The Obscure 11-06-2010, 09:34 PM Oh yea, ready for season 6!! :D
Smartboy 11-07-2010, 01:07 AM Ive been checking for a release date cuz i'm dying to know when we can look forward to it! I am thinking May because it is 6 months from now but who knows. I thought that "Crossing the Line" told a very good story!
angel676 11-07-2010, 07:17 PM I wouldn't be surprised if seasons 6 & 7 are released next year, I'm hoping at least! Seasons 4 & 5 were released this year, if Shout releases 2 seasons a year, FOL fans will have the whole series in 2 years. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!
The Obsolete Man 11-07-2010, 09:36 PM I'm worried about S6 because of the music clearance that will need to be done for Cruisin'.
ZeldaGilroy 11-07-2010, 10:02 PM I'm worried about S6 because of the music clearance that will need to be done for Cruisin'.
I'm a little worried about this too. Crossing my fingers though that they can work it out and we'll have season 6 soon!
folbartman 11-09-2010, 02:03 AM 80's child!!! Im curious as to why you like season 6 so much compared to season 5?? I find that very interesting. I do like Seasons 7 and 8 very much. Season 6 lagged to me except the episodes of the Pizza, Summer Vacations, Drive-In, and Crusin!!!!
I also thought that tag music was cheesy -- it was like they were testing out a modern thing to do at the time (in sitcom terms). Thank god they got rid of that cheesy tag music before the end of the show for season 7 and revamped the entire show and set entirely.
Natalie1969 11-09-2010, 01:50 PM How ironic is it that 80's child says that seasons 1-5 are their least favorite and 6-9 are their favorite. For me it is the exact opposite. I like certain episodes from these seasons but not the majority like the others. I have been glued to my season 5 DVD all week. It's like which episode do I want to see first, next and so on. My faves are Brave New World 1 & 2, Mother and Daughter, A Death in the Family, Small But Dangerous, & Advanced Placement. The Halloween Show, A Star at Langley, and Dream Marriage are like snooze city. The Way We Were 1 & 2 were fine back in the day but now with reruns and DVD boxed sets I feel like I just saw those episodes. It's not like oh cool I haven't seen these episodes in a while. Everything else was cool.
80schild.com 11-09-2010, 09:55 PM I think season six story lines are more mature and less preachy than season five. They switched up Kelly for Andy & Kevin, and we see more exterior location scenes and additional sets instead of the standard/claustrophobic living room & store front sets in season 5. We get Flyman's music, natalie throwing a party during a hurricane, blairs private jet!, Hack putting the moves on Jo, blair fighting Moon Unit Zappa and dating a coke head :) and tootie trying to have sex with Jeff.
The episode "Working it out" is the most under rated of the season, we never get blair as exposed as she is here anywhere else in the season (apart from Less Than Perfect), it's the first time we see a real challenge to Mrs. Garrets authority (Quite refreshing!), and there is finally some references to one of the girls having a sex life!, The blocking for the show is more 'real' with the appearance of a busy/chaotic house as opposed to the obvious stand and deliver your lines routines that are unnatural and common in season 5, And i've never heard the studio audience laugh as loud as when Natalie delivers the dead bird line to Tootie :)
Yes those tags and grandma piano chords are bad, but it's the only time we ever get to see the exterior of the store.
Paul Haggis has his input into Season 6 and 7, and it sure helps. I think it was a bad decision when they fired him as a producer/writer - simply because he said the show wasn't funny.
There are many eps of season 6 that i don't like, less than other seasons tho.
:)
folbartman 11-11-2010, 04:25 PM If you notice there is a blooper in the outside shots of edna's! Compare the credits interior shot with the exterior and count the window pane's. They don't match up. You can also see a lounging chair in the window. (was someones living room probably).
Season 6 to myself was starting to show the show's age. You can watch Seasons 7-9 entirely by themselves since the show felt like something fresh and new but with the same characters.
i also agree with the season 6 storylines. They tend to mature, and get more realtistic.
Paul Haggis was brilliant - he was right the show wasn't that funny at times at all - Season Seven was just so different and the jokes were actually funny.
Jude The Obscure 11-11-2010, 11:55 PM Season 7 really sees the girls getting loose and breaking out of being the same old characters--I think the freedom from having to do those "very special episodes" was refreshing to the writers and the actors!
80schild.com 11-12-2010, 10:14 PM Yea exactly. We really get some fun moments in season 8, and beverly ann brings lots of slap stick and sight gags :) Really looking forward to EIGHT on dvd.
Johnny be good! 11-14-2010, 05:33 PM I'm pumped as well!
folbartman 11-17-2010, 10:07 PM Some people believe that Seasons 6-9 will suffer because of popular culture music license to the show and some big name stars.
Season 6-
Cruisin
You've Lost That Lovin Feelin' - Righteous Brothers
Dancing Queen - ABBA
Gone With The Wind
She is in a Different World - Michael Damian
Christmas in the big House
(all x-mas songs)
* I don't feel the gone with the wind episode will have a problem, the song wasn't that big. I'm worried about the Cruisin' episode as I am guessing they may have to cut the scene with the Righteous Brothers song as that will probably be outrageous costs. All the Christmas songs are public domain since their copyrights have expired. No issues with this episode and not recorded by original artist.
Season 7
Freeway of Love - Aretha Franklin
Cherish - Kool N the Gang
Everytime you go away - Paul Young
String of Pearls - Gershwin
A Fifth Of Beethoven - Walter Murray
Little Deuce Coup - (Like beach boys Artist)
Fun, Fun, Fun - (Beach Boys)
You Wear It Well - El Debarge (Live Performance)
Eyes of a Stranger - Michael Damian
* I also don't think this season will have an affected music rights problem. I may be wrong -- but isn't it different if the artist performs it live rather than a recording version of their song? And All the music in this season is before or after a commercial break -- If they need to cut it -- it will be easy to do (and frankly I could careless). The Michael D. song was never even a hit - therefore I don't think that would be a problem. The Gershwin song in (Ballroom Dance) is public domain and the disco track of Beethoven isn't that critical to the show story line. Now In Tootie's Driving Episode, it is not the Beach Boys version. As a kid i was a fan of beach boys and believe they got a like artist to record this song since the show did not get clearance to the original.
Alf Season One did this for Ol' Time Rock N Roll and the music clearance is okay since it is not the original artist.
Fun, Fun, Fun -- may be a problem. I believe this is the beach boys track.
Season 8
Two of Hearts - Stacy Q (Live)
We Connect - Stacy Q (Live)
Hot Rod Lover - FOL girls
Let's Put the fun back in Rock N Roll - Fabian/Bobby Rydell/FOL Girls
* Stacy Q was more so a one hit wonder -- don't think the clearance rights will be expensive. Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock N Roll was originally by Freddy Cannon and The Belmonts and was a hit of 1981. Since it was not sung by the original artist -- licensing may be unlimited and will probably not be expensive. Hot Rod Lover was an original song for the show -- therefore no licensing exsists within the show itself.
Season 9
Girls In Trouble - FOL Girls
* This season has no effect on the music licensing. Girls In Trouble was written for the show.
Overall, If I am correct -- the only issue I see of having music rights not being released would be Crusin'. Hopefully this is not the case. If so -- I will still buy the set. The other cuts would be easy since the pop songs were after a commercial break. Anyone know about if a live performance is less restricted than a studio version. All other cuts would be easy to make and fairly unnoticable. Curious of all your thoughts. Season Seven has alot of music, but thankfully fairly easy to cut if necessary.

Season 6-
Cruisin
You've Lost That Lovin Feelin' - Righteous Brothers
Dancing Queen - ABBA
.[/U]
Both of these were cover versions to begin with and not by the original artists, so I doubt we will see rights issues....the writers will still get paid the royalty for having written the songs, but no hold up on the artists' end because Righteous Bros and ABBA were not used.
zypherix 11-18-2010, 04:01 AM Cruisin also had "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and "Hot Stuff" playing.
folbartman 11-18-2010, 07:12 PM I never noticed that. I just compared Abba's with Crusin Episode. And you're right. Not the same artist.
I was not a fan of the Righteous Brothers -- but it looks like the producers were smart in not using the original versions (almost like predicting a dvd rights nightmare hell)! Good! There shouldn't be any problem with this then, costs would have to be minimal.
also, The Freeway of Love song that was used in Season 7 was a cover as well along with soe of the other songs with the exceptions of maybe the Beach Boys, El Debarge and Michael Damian

Stacey Q is with an E, come on! haha.
And she wasn't a one hit wonder, she had hits before and after that song. Her early 80s new wave SSQ stuff is pretty good. Just sayin folks...

whoops 80's child -- she wasn't even on my importance list -- thats maybe why i left the e off. haha. :P
Jude The Obscure 11-24-2010, 01:15 AM Many series in the 80s began the use of cover/soundalikes whenever they used hit songs--back then, licensing was probably an issue already!
Robert 13 11-24-2010, 01:46 PM Replying to 2 separate posts...
First off... 80's child is right. Stacey was not a one-hit wonder. Though she is often mistakenly given this title, Stacey has had quite a career. And her music really is awesome. Her early days with SSQ is still cool today. And her latest album "Color Me Cinnamon" (yes, a throwback to her days on FOL) is a tremendous effort. Lotsa great tracks on there, specifically "Candy Apple" and "Sad Cafe".
Secondly, I do believe the version of "Freeway Of Love" is Aretha's version. I don't believe a cover was used in this instance.
:)
Jude The Obscure 11-24-2010, 02:52 PM ^Even if this is the case........they may simply substitute the music since it is not critical to the episode, not unlike the tunes used in "Cruisin'"
80schild.com 12-03-2010, 01:43 AM Come on Season 8 DVD!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ_8TuG_z9c
This is easily one of the most favorite episodes of the series...
Ian905 12-17-2010, 11:13 PM Can anybody confirm that Season 6 will even be released? DVD companies are notorious for dropping series halfway through. If it is confirmed, any sneak peaks at the cover art?
Jude The Obscure 12-22-2010, 11:30 PM Shout! seems committed to the series it licenses from other studios. If season 5 didn't sell well enough in stores and through online sites like Amazon, they will most likely release seasons 6-9 as Shout! Select titles--meaning you buy them directly from Shout!
80schild.com 12-25-2010, 12:21 PM Season five had to do well in sales. Enough to warrant the release of the next season....

Jude The Obscure 12-25-2010, 03:51 PM I'm sure it did! but just in case... we are still getting season 6 one way or another.

The season 6 and 7 being released right away was a hoax. The Shout! guy confirmed that.
Jude The Obscure 01-26-2011, 01:57 AM They need to make an announcement for Season 6!!

I agree with you. I was seven when I saw that episode and to me, it sounded like Aretha Franklin singing. I was like "I know that song". LOL.
Ian905 08-03-2011, 07:33 PM I want season 6 soooo bad. :( I don't wanna have to burn a bootleg copy but if I'm gonna have to wait a couple years I will. :/
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 08-04-2011, 10:37 PM The episode "Working it out" is the most under rated of the season, we never get blair as exposed as she is here anywhere else in the season (apart from Less Than Perfect), it's the first time we see a real challenge to Mrs.
This episode is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES!!! I thought it was one of the top rated episodes in general too, i didn't know if was under rated, anyways... a few questions for you 80s child, what is the reference you are referring to about one of the girls having a sex life? I guess i didn't get that from the episode. I LOVE the dead birds on her ears line... this episode was just fabulous because like 80s child said, it was somebody actually completely going against Mrs. G and defying her, and everyone just trying to do their own thing in life, this was the first episode i really saw all of them growing up.
But pretty much after season 7 (when Mrs. Garrett left) the show was not the same to me. Don't get me wrong, i do enjoy the episodes from 8 and 9 but i don't think of it as the same show anymore. I was also incredibly disappointed that they didn't end the show on a good note. They really should have had Mrs. G come back and the girls all leaving to go their own ways in life, Jo married, Blair doing the headmaster thing, Nat following Snake somewhere, Tootie and Jeff getting married... i mean, give it a good ending! Anyways, there's my two-sense :)
