You and some of your contemporaries, like Betty White, have seen your popularity surge in recent years. How do you explain it, nostalgia?
I’ve only had one interview lately where I haven’t been asked that! We’re both 80. It’s stupid. We’re not friends; we never phone each other. There are a lot of people in their 80s. I don’t think America is that fond of us, it’s just publicity. I like to take credit for hiring Betty for the Mary Tyler Moore Show. When she came on, in my deal, I had six of 13 episodes that were heavy for [my character"> Phyllis, and then they let me go and I had my own show. I said, “Why don’t you have Betty replace me?”
