Great News, but unless Bill Bixby is coming back from the beyond, "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father" never had a Christmas episode....I got fooled as did GoodLife TV when they were running it a few years back....the episode originally aired near Christmas and was about gift giving to Norm. Unless Goodlife edited something out, the word Christmas is never mentioned, no tree, no decorations, not one happy holiday, no cards, zip, natta, nothing....so I advise Warner to actually watch the episode b4 putting it on this set...rather have another Alice, since they did 3 plus a new years episode....actually Alice holds the record for the most holiday themed episodes in a series from Valentines day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Years, etc.

OFF TOPIC: Pav could you answer my question in the WPIX/NY Chiller Theatre thread regarding them cutting the movies down to two instead of four?...seems some last minute changes have been made.

How is the DVD quality? Falcon Crest season 2 came out and I heard the quality of the release was awful. I'd love to buy it for the Eight is Enough episode and the Alice episode plus Mama's Family.

We don't have the set yet for review, so can't tell you about the quality yet. So stay tuned to that.

Thanks TeeVeeCloset. Interesting about COEF. Didn't know that.

The biggest selling point for me is Eight is Enough, but not sure if that warrants a purchase. I do like the cover art, and Perfect Strangers and CHiPS would be a bonus. I'll keep the set in mind.

I just want to confirm that what TVCloset said about COED is absolutely correct. I also got fooled into thinking the 2nd Season episode from that series, entitled "Gifts are for Giving", was a Christmas episode because it did originally air in December of that year. But it's not one and I'm betting Warners is just going on the assumption it is. If someone close to them can tell them otherwise it might be to their benefit before they create a master DVD-R.

Also, I'm really, really hoping that they use the 1st Season Christmas episode from DR. KILDARE (there are actually two in this series), called "Season to be Jolly". It's by far the superior Christmas episode and it's one of my favorite of all time.

From Warner Archive on Courtship of Eddie's Father:

Interesting production note: the ep is not specific to Xmas but was made for Xmas. About gifting. Very subtle and sweet. We defined it would fit based on what we understand as the production's intent. Also, you get a great COEF ep!

Very interesting, Pav. Thanks for the update from Warners on this issue. I am glad we are at least getting a COED episode on disc, but I'd really love to know why the writers at the time didn't make the episode a true Christmas one (with at least some of the trappings).

I know you will agree with me about this....I would have much rather seen the Christmas episode of "Life Goes On" or about 10 other lost known Christmas episodes than a non-christmas episode of "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father" ....as usual so close, but the company still screws something up!

Gotta agree, TV. That episode just isn't Christmasy at all to me. They blew it on that one. If anything, they could have released both Christmas episodes from KILDARE. Or another of the four from ALICE (I'm assuming they are only going to include one on this set). Or, as you suggest, any one of many other "lost" Christmas episodes.

B&W "I'll blow a gasket if they go with the later KILDARE" O.

The Eight is Enough Christmas episode was a 2-hour episode, and also ended up being a tribute to Diana Hyland (Joan Bradford), who passed away after filming the first 4 episodes. I sure hope its shown intact!

I purchased some dvd MOD sets from THEWBShop this past year, including the MGM Our Gang Set plus a few movies, and found that absolutely none of the discs played on my dvd player. I would very much like to get this Xmas set, but am concerned I'll have the same problem.

Anybody else encounter problems with discs from WB MOD? Are they lower quality than those sold at regular retail? Do I need to update my dvd player?

I have bought two movies from them and have not experienced one issue with them--never would know that that are DVD-R discs.

As for the set, I'm tempted to get it for the Eight is Enough and Mama's Family episodes --since who knows when we will ever see these shows on DVD.
I'm not sure, but I think the Alice episode is already on the best of Alice DVD.

Thanks for the review Pavan. I thought that Mama's Family was edited but forgot the Bubba years were in first syndicated. Glad we will get hopefully a replacement disc for Perfect Strangers.

I personally find the set very good. I am happy I bought it. It was my first MOD purchase from WB. I hope to get Falcon Crest Season 2 soon on dvd. I'm waiting for the price to go down...lol....it was 34 bucks for a couple of days but didnt want to get it until I received this one. Now FC is 50 bucks so I will wait for it to be lowered.

Again thanks for the review!

I've got to say the audio for this DVD is very good. So far the best video quality episodes are Mama's Family and Perfect Strangers. Eight is Enough interior scenes look real good but the exterior scenes...dont look as good.

I love this "10 TV Classic Christmas Episode" DVD but I want to mention that the Eight Is Enough episode on this disk is missing an opening tag with Nicholas and Tom Bradford (just before the opening titles play) and an ending tag with all of the kids plus Tom and Abby (just before the ending credits)...so this episode is not uncut and is missing those scenes...other than that I loved seeing this Christmas episode again.

Also...Not thrilled to see an non-Christmas episode included on this Christmas DVD...i.e...."The Courtship Of Eddie's Father". The studio creating this DVD needed to do better research on the programs they selected.

Those are my only grips and glad I own the DVD!

I posted this on the Alice board but either no one is visiting the board lately or maybe no one cares...lol..., so I thought I would try again here. For those who bought the "Warner Exclusive Christmas Classics Collection".....I already have over 100 Alice episodes from chopped ION, but the print used in the DVD was the same, even though it clocked in at about 25 minutes....but ION used sped-up/time compressed versions....sometimes on ION the theme song, Linda Lavin sounded like she was on helium singing with Alvin....now on both versions...ION & Warner, you do see the opening producer credits as the ladies talk during the first scene, which would make one think it isn't edited, BUT....here comes my "Alice" geekdom....Alice says to Flo, "That is what I was trying to tell you" about her taking Tommy to her relatives...seems like an odd way to start a storyline....also during the closing montage, as they always show pictures from the episode...the first one shown is a picture of Alice kissing a regular customer old bearded man under the mistletoe....which is not shown in either version, all the other pictures shown are from the episode .....my opinion is that about 30 seconds or more was cut. Or was this the way the episode was originally broadcast leaving that kissing scene and Alice saying "That is what I was trying to tell you" without us ever seeing it and/or was it left on the cutting room floor?
