Not only did I love Mr. Bosley as Mr. C, I enjoyed his work as the doctor in the original Yours, Mine & Ours, the voice of David the Gnome, Father Dowling, "it's time to feed the kitties!" and of course, the pitchman for Glad trash bags. God bless you, Mr. Bosley. To quote your last line on Happy Days, "Thank you for being part of our family."

So sad. It hurts to see the people you grew up with pass away. "Happy Days" was my favorite show when I was a kid and Howard Cunningham was the ideal father. The "are you being frisky, Howard"? scenes between Tom Bosley and Marion Ross were priceless.

It seems almost fitting that we would lose this fine actor on a Tuesday, the day that "Happy Days" ruled the airwaves.

RIP, Mr. C!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tom Bosley, whose long acting career was highlighted by his hugely popular role as the understanding father on television's nostalgic, top-rated 1970s comedy series "Happy Days," died Tuesday. He was 83.

Bosley died of heart failure at a hospital near his Palm Springs home. Bosley's agent, Sheryl Abrams, said he was also battling lung cancer.

TV Guide ranked Bosley's "Happy Days" character, Howard Cunningham, at No. 9 on its list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" in 2004. The show debuted in 1974 and ran for 11 seasons.

"Tom's insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the 'Happy Days' experience. A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom led by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it," said a statement from Ron Howard, who played Bosley's son, Richie Cunningham.

"My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life. I miss him already," Howard said.

"He was my husband for ll years and the father of the company in many ways," said Marion Ross, who played Marion Cunningham on the show. "He was so smart he could fix the end of a joke or a scene on the spot. We made a perfect couple. I played picolo to his tuba."

After "Happy Days" ended, Bosley went on to a recurring role in "Murder, She Wrote" as Sheriff Amos Tupper. He also was the crime-solving priest in television's "The Father Dowling Mysteries," which ran from 1989 to 1991.

When he was first offered the costarring role in "Happy Days," a series about teenage life in the 1950s, he turned it down.

"After rereading the pilot script," he recalled in a 1986 interview, "I changed my mind because of a scene between Howard Cunningham and Richie. The father/son situation was written so movingly, I fell in love with the project."

Propelled by the nation's nostalgia for the simple pleasures of the 1950s, "Happy Days," which debuted in 1974, slowly built to hit status, becoming television's top-rated series by its third season.

It made a star of Henry Winkler, who played hip-talking, motorcycle-riding hoodlum Arthur "Fonzi" Fonzarelli, helped launch the career of Howard and led to other television spinoffs.

Although "Happy Days" brought him his widest fame, Bosley had made his mark on Broadway 15 years before when he turned in a Tony Award-winning performance in the title role in "Fiorello!"

His Broadway triumph depicted the life of New York's colorful reformist mayor of the 1930s and '40s, Fiorello La Guardia. For two years, Bosley stopped the show every night when he sang in several languages, depicting La Guardia during the years the future mayor worked at New York's Ellis Island, aiding arriving immigrants.

The play won a Pulitzer Prize and Bosley received the Tony for best actor in a musical.

After failing to duplicate his success in "Fiorello!," Bosley moved to Hollywood in 1968. He would not return to Broadway until 1994 when he originated the role of Belle's father in Disney's production of "Beauty and the Beast."

In Hollywood, the rotund character actor found steady work appearing in the occasional movie and as a regular on weekly TV shows starring Debbie Reynolds, Dean Martin, Sandy Duncan and others.

During the 1990s, Bosley toured in "Beauty and the Beast" and "Show Boat," playing Captain Andy in the latter.

Bosley made only a handful of theatrical movies. Among them: "Love With the Proper Stranger," ''Divorce American Style," ''The Secret War of Henry Frigg," ''Yours, Mine and Ours."

Bosley capitalized on his fame from "Happy Days" to serve as a pitchman for GLAD trash bags along with other products.

Born in Chicago in 1927, Bosley served in the Navy before returning to his hometown to study at DePaul University. Intrigued with acting, he enrolled at the Radio Institute of Chicago and began appearing in radio dramas.

Bosley married dancer Jean Eliot in 1962 and the couple had one child, Amy. Two years after his wife's death in 1978, Bosley married actress-producer Patricia Carr, who had three daughters from a previous marriage.

Happy Days got sadder when we found out that Tom Bosley passed away. He was an outstanding actor who also excelled in commercials and cartoon voiceovers, such as Harry Boyle on Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home. He was also one of the best TV dads of all time and the one moment I remember about him on Happy Days when he addressed the camera after Joanie and Chachi's wedding and thanked viewers for being part of their family. To Happy Days and may he rest in peace.

Director-producer Garry Marshall — who created the iconic TV series Happy Days — Ron Howard, and Henry Winkler have released statements to EW about late actor Tom Bosley, who played the show’s patriarch. (Bosley passed away at 83 years old after a long battle with lung cancer.)

Garry Marshall, Happy Days creator:“Tom was a talented professional in front of the camera and behind the scenes. He provided a positive influence over all of the young actors on Happy Days. Audiences will never forget the lovable Howard Cunningham who made us laugh on Tuesday nights. He was a good friend. I will miss him. Comedy will miss him.”

Ron Howard, who played Bosley’s on-screen son, Richie: “I’m so saddened by the loss of our wonderful Tom Bosley. Remarkable on so many levels, Tom’s insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the Happy Days experience. A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom lead by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it. My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life. I miss him already.”

Henry Winkler, who played Arthur Fonzarelli a.k.a. “The Fonz” on Happy Days: “Tom was a family member, both on and off the sound stage. We acted together, traveled together and played charades together. He was a loving husband, a doting father and a fantastic grandfather. He will be so missed but never forgotten by the Winkler Family or the world.”

Stars Pay Tribute To 'Happy Days' Star Tom Bosley In Today's Tweet Dreams

Posted 55 minutes ago by Aly Semigran in The Twitter Nation

Tom BosleyTom Bosley (pictured), who played one of television's most iconic fathers, Mr. Cunningham, on the classic sitcom "Happy Days" died today at the age of 83. Hollywood paid their respects to the Tony-winning actor on Twitter, including some of Bosley's former co-stars. Neil Patrick Harris, posted, "Sad news: Tom Bosley has passed away. Such a wonderful man. We worked together in Cabaret on Broadway. So kind. He will be missed..." and "That 70's Show" star Danny Masterson told fans, "Happy Days Tom Bosley passed 2day. Worked w him on 70s. He was a lovely lovely man. Cheers Tom."

But, it wasn't just those who had the honor of working with Bosley who took to their Twitters, as fellow famous fans left some words about the star of stage and screen. Director/writer/actor Kevin Smith wrote, "America's Dad dies: g'bye & thanks, Tom Bosley" while Carson Daly put, simply, "Rest in peace Mr. C."

RIP Tom Bosley, the first of the main cast members of Happy Days to pass away (if Heather O'Rourke is not counted, she was a part of the cast during the show's 10th season). After 83 years, you're with the DCS now, Mr Bosley. Now Marion Ross (who has an obsessive crush on me and who turns 82 on October 25) is going to run everywhere I go until I end up being kissed by Ross excessively until my face is completely covered with lipstick. (gross, eh?) if Ross dies, her ghost would do the same thing.

An appreciation: Tom Bosley, 1927-2010
October 19, 2010 | 4:21 pm

Tom Bosley, who died in Palm Springs on Tuesday at the age of 83, was a character actor, and as with most character actors, his many roles resolve themselves in memory toward a hum, an affect: He was round, we remember, and dark and funny. And as with most actors who have the luck, good or ill, to be cast in a long-running television show, the particulars of a lengthy and varied career tend to be absorbed into a single, blinding overwhelming fact. That Bosley won a 1960 Tony Award for the musical "Fiorello!" will be mentioned in many of his obituaries, but nearly all will lead with "Happy Days," the candy-colored situation comedy in which he starred from 1974 to 1984 -- and likely will star, in reruns, long after the rest of us have followed him into the aether.

As befitted that fanciful, though not particularly ironic or satiric, revival of the old-fashioned family sitcom, Bosley's Howard Cunningham was a Mixmastered version of the TV fathers played by Robert Young, Ozzie Nelson and Hugh Beaumont, a man whose quest for a peace long enough to get through the evening paper was disturbed by his children, their friends and sometimes his wife. Of all the characters in that show, whose imaginary prelapsarian American normality made a lovable scamp even of its resident outlaw, Bosley's was arguably the most authentically normal -- the perfected embodiment of Dadness yet with recognizably human edges. He was the now-irascible, now-comforting voice of experience, and the necessary rock against which everything else crashed or clung to. This is an easier part to make iconic than to make interesting, but Bosley did both.

Bosley, who had previously worked on sitcoms led by Debbie Reynolds and Sandy Duncan and voiced the eponymous pater in the cartoon series "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home," was already in his mid-40s when "Happy Days" premiered. It's another quality of character actors to be really noticed only with time, when they have already come into themselves: They ripen on the vine, as it were. Not being saddled with the weight of remembered youth, they can age gracefully, and on the job. Bosley starred in only one more television show after "Happy Days" -- "Father Dowling Mysteries," where he was partnered with Ozzie's granddaughter, Tracy Nelson -- and played a recurring role on "Murder, She Wrote." But he worked until this year, and it's hard to believe he's done now.

-- Robert Lloyd

What a sad week to be a TV sitcom fan. Two beloved characters from my 2 favorite shows of all time are now but fond memories for those of us lucky enough to have seen their reruns over and over again and hoping for more every time out. Hearing of the loss of Barbara Billingsley left me deeply saddened and hurt, yet also comforted by the fact that "Leave It To Beaver", and her great contribution to the show's success and lasting appeal as one of TV's greatest Moms, will always be with us. With the news of Tom Bosley's death a mere 3 days later of heart failure and lung cancer, those same feelings returned to me only in a more personal sense, since I was still a child when "Happy Days" began in 1973 and I grew up along with the show, never dreaming that it would still be on when I reached my adulthood. The show underwent many changes through the years but one thing that remained constant was Tom Bosley as "Mr. C." with his jolly Santa Claus smile and his sometimes firm but always fair parenting style that was ironically patterned after Ward Cleaver and other TV dads from the 1950s that were always home whenever their families needed them and the viewers were forever thankful for it. There is one memory that I have from "Happy Days" that confirms this for me. A few of you have already mentioned his touching speech that he made in the series finale where he thanked all the viewers for being part of his family. If you look at the opening credits for that episode and for that entire final season, there is a brief shot of the first episode when Howard is watching TV and accidentally knocks down Joanie. The next shot is of Joanie, now fully grown, being helped up by Howard and they are both sitting together again as if nothing has changed only they are much happier and just a little bit nostalgic. That's the way I will choose to remember Tom Bosley and his TV counterpart Howard Cunningham: physically big and strong and a little rough around the edges on the outside, but on the inside, soft and gentle and understanding even when he felt mad enough to lose his patience whenever Richie or Joanie did something wrong. He was the kind of Dad that you wished you had and one that you loved to watch.

So long, Mr. C! May all of your days be "Happy Days", just like mine are whenever it's on!
