View Full Version : How About a Re-Release of I Love Lucy in Color
RWCTV 10-19-2010, 06:29 AM The availability of I Love Lucy is astounding. Even in the 21st century, you can find the show on numerous TV networks and stations, the entire series is available on DVD, it is available on the internet to watch. What next? How can CBS sell I Love Lucy any further? I have one suggestion. Re-release the DVD sets in color.
Sony Pictures did this with Bewitched, and The Three Stooges and it was a success. Using 21st century colorization technology, along with numerous, various resources to research from (including surviving people who were involved with the show), I have no doubt in my mind that they can give I Love Lucy an excellent color treatment that could make the viewer forget that it was ever in black and white. It would also be a new way to look at Lucy and thus providing a new way to market the show once again.
And yet, to serve as a "tester", they could release a test DVD with classic episodes from every season to see if people would buy, or re-buy the series in color.
Hughsgirl 10-19-2010, 09:21 AM I personally would not care for a colorized version of ILL. I think part of the charm of the classics is keeping it classic in it's original state and that's why I cringe whenever they try to remake a classic show. First off you can't replace the classic actors and you can't recreate the charm of the era. I know I'm going off subject so I'll stop here.

This is weird I just had a dream last night that the show was actually in color. I think it would be cool to re-release each season colorized. They could just say on the box that it's the colorized version and still have the black and white version available for those who prefer to watch it in black and white. They say that colorizing technology has improved over the years. Maybe they could pull it off if they could be the show match the color episodes of The Lucy Show season 2 to 6. Also, maybe they could do it where it would look natural and not fake. They did pretty good on the scottland episode. Course this could cost a lot of money for them to do. I've even wondered what ILL would look like in color besides for the scottland episode.

Benno123 10-19-2010, 07:59 PM Why must people feel that, after almost 60 years, it is time to mess with perfection?
tvfreak1987 10-19-2010, 08:27 PM Personally I think it's a cool idea. I've often wondered what ILL would look like in color (aside from the Scotland and Christmas episodes). If Sony could do this with the early seasons of Bewitched and Jeannie, I don't see why it couldn't work with Lucy.
Benno123 10-20-2010, 06:14 PM When we're at it, why not put clothes on the statue of David and give the Mona Lisa a new hair style?
LucilleBallfan 10-20-2010, 06:32 PM to all of you who are baggin the idea of ILL in color on DVD, CAN IT! You dont HAVE to watch it in color. There would still be the B&W versions available. I have every episode on DVD, and i think theyre wonderful in B&W, but i would LOVE to see ILL in color (other than "Lucy goes to Scotland" and the Christmas Special partially colorized). I say, they should do it. I'd buy em. I think that test DVD idea was a good idea too.

On the one hand, I understand the objections to colorizing I Love Lucy: it would compromise the artistic integrity of people like cinematographer Karl Freund, who painstakingly lit (and sometimes painted or touched up) every set on the show, ensured all the costuming had the right shades, and that cameras were positioned correctly -- all to capture the most ideal black and white image. By necessity, lighting and sets have to be designed differently for black and white versus color film. And all the work Karl Freund did was to ensure an ideal black and white image. Different lighting, sets and costuming would be required for color film. So colorizing the show would be a huge slap in the face of Karl Freund and his colleagues and successors. Freund was an artist, too, and colorizing the show would be like throwing paint on his artistic endeavors.
On the other hand, doing this could extend the life of the show for many years to come. There are many young folks who, frankly, will not spend one minute watching anything in black and white. If it were in color, it would open the show up to a much wider audience and extend its life, perhaps indefinitely. People would discover the show who perhaps never would otherwise. Personally, I think a colorized version would be a great idea to capture a new audience, and the black and white version would still be available for purists and to sustain Karl Freund's legacy.

Though I agree with the rest of your post, this part was uncalled for.
