Idina Menzel Talks "Glee"

Idina Menzel, the Tony Award-winning actress who most recently played Rachel's mom on "Glee", will embark on an eleven-city tour kicking off Oct. 28 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
In an interview with TV Squad, Menzel said she'll be singing two songs from her time on "Glee", including the Lady Gaga song 'Poker Face,' which she famously sang opposite Lea Michele.
Menzel's character, Shelby, was the coach of the rival glee club, "Vocal Adrenalin" and was revealed to be Rachel's (Michele) mother who gave her up for adoption.
At the end of the episode, Shelby told Rachel she couldn't be a part of her life, but did adopt cheerleader Quinn's newborn child.
Menzel told us that understanding the character's controversial motives was difficult because she had just given birth to a son in real life with husband Taye Diggs.
"I didn't understand that. So you want a young baby, but why would you leave your old baby?" she asked of her "Glee" character. "Why not have both? It was really hard for me."
She also talked about how her "Glee" character was originally just brought in as the rival coach and the decision to make her Rachel's mother came later.
"I don't think Ryan Murphy intended it to be," she said. "He was thinking of me for the coach and then they combined it all because they wanted to make the fans happy, I think."
