IS there any way we can ban the use of memorex dvds in trading circles? i can't be the only person who has problems with these coasters.

In the trading community I'm from, no one will ever use memorex. They are taboo. Anything else is acceptable. This week, till tomorrow, Staples has a great deal on HP, 15 bucks a hundred. I stocked up. Sale ends tomorrow.

i personally don't understand why anyone would even bother with Memorex or cheap no-name brands when you can wait til the premium Taiyo Yudens go on sale and get them for about the same price.

you may want to just make a habit of specifying beforehand with any future trades - or just put a note at the top of your trade list: "NO MEMOREX!!!"

I hate memorex, I also hate Maxells. When I remember I try to tell people this before a trade, but I often forget.


How can memorex make such a ****ty product?

Verbatims often go on sale at Bestbuy for $13 @50; I've had good luck with those.

I wouldn't be too critical of Memorex dvds, they are good for something.

I hate waiting for sales at stores. You can always get better prices on the net. I usually get 600 at a time.

Wow you guys, I haven't had any trouble with Memorex DVD's.

verbatum sucks too. they are made cheap now unlike before. TY, Sony is only ones i like myself

for a long time i hated sony, they would always freeze. then i got a different recorder and had no problems. most of the time it is the brand of recorder or player that rejects the type of dvd. the only dvds that i have problems with are the no name kind,where both sides look alike. does anyone know if these old videotape companies went into making dvds ? polaroid, scotch, kodak, basf, tozai. tozai didnt do very good in the tape department, used to be the cheapest videotape you could get, 79 cents at wal-greens.

I'm kind of at a crossroads here. I don't want to get any more memorex discs in trades, but at the same time, i don't want to make it seem like I'm picky to someone who may not realize the sucktitude of memorex discs. I think another problem related to this, is that, at least locally, memorex are the most common discs on the market. A major chain of stores by me only sells memorex discs. So I think some traders just pick up that because of the sheer convenience. I do understand how it could be annoying to go to several stores to find what you want.

You hit the nail on the head. I personally have never had a problem with Memorex and did not realize that they have a bad reputation until I found this post. So, for me Memorex has been convenient (yes ...Wal-Mart), however, I think now it's time for a change!

I have tried several different types of dvd's including Memorex, Phillips, TDk, Verbatim and Maxell and never had trouble with any of them. If I ever make a trade with anyone feel free to tell me if you dont want a specific kind.

i always use verbatim dvd-r, tdk and the others just are not as good.
someone i traded with used the cheap dvds forget the brand but i can not even watch them they freeze or break up the person did not even care
i will not name this person this person still trades on this sight.

It's been my experience that you can often re-burn a troubled disc onto better media (like TY) and that stops any freezing/stuttering type problems on playback.

I have done this a few times with discs I received from other traders. I usually don't say anything to the people that send me the bum discs. I just figure they don't know any better and it's not worth the trouble of getting into it with someone when they simply don't know their DVDs and/or equipment suck.

I second this! Many times I've had disks that freeze or even causes the player to crash. I burn a copy and the new disk works without any problems! :)

for me it works about 99% of the time. I have some DVDs that won't work on my TV's DVD Player, but they work fine on my Portable DVD Player! Why this happens is beyond my reasoning :confused: , but when that happens I mark the disk with the letter "P" to remind me it works on the portable player only.:cool:

It depends on the problem.

If the disc has been scratched, or the original burn was "bad" (corrupt file, not closed properly, etc.) a computer may not be able to read the disc at all in which case you can't re-burn it. That being said, there are many different burning software applications and many different types of hardware that may be able to read/burn the disc, so it's definitely worth experimenting.

As an example, I once had a disc that played perfectly on my standalone DVD player. However, when I tried to play it on my desk top, the computer would not even recognize a disc was in the drive. If I attempted to open the disc in file manager, nothing came up. The computer had two drives, and neither would even acknowledge there was a disc in the drive. I finally tried the same disc on my lap top and it opened with ease. In the end, I used my lap top to re-burn the disc, and it solved the problem.

To the original point though - when it comes to freezing/stuttering on a standalone DVD player, I've found that 9 times out of 10 it's caused a media issue, and re-burning will solve the problem.

One more point worth mentioning - watch your burn speed. Most burning applications will default to the fastest speed the drive supports. This is generally okay with data DVDRs, but for a video that I intend to watch on a standalone DVD player, I still burn at 4x. Just seems to work better.
