View Full Version : Laurence Harding Jr. - What happened to him?
JenniferS. 10-14-2010, 02:24 PM I don't know if anyone remembers this story. Geoffry Harding was searching for his lost older brother Laurence who was kidnapped as a baby by two teenage girls. Apparently his mother left the baby outside in his carriage after asking the neighbor to watch the child. Why she was gone the girls took the bsby. Later ther family gets a phone call from one of the girls that they are returning the baby but that dosent happen. Years later Geoffry readfs the police file on his brothers case and finds out the police interviewed a train station worker who talked with older woman. She had been given the baby buy young girl to watch why girl went to use the bathroom. Only the young girl never comes back. So olde weomn takes the baby on the train with her to the next town telling the train atendent were she is going if the mother wants the baby back. Geoffry hired a private investigator to and goes to were this lady said her family was at the time and can't find any connection their anymore. This case just seems like it should be very solveable. It seems if Aunt or Grandmother come to see family with baby she dosent have before it talk about in the family for years. I just can't figure why no one has come forward? I don't supose anyone else has found an update on this storey have they?

I don't think it will ever be solved

I don't see why not. I can't figure why know one has come forward. I wonder what led the police to the train station in finding out about the woman? Why didnt this woman take the baby to the police? Comon sense tells you to go to the authorities. You would think sense she was going to see her family. Some one would remember a relative comming to their home with a baby they didnt have before. It just seems one of those stories that passed down in the family. There would be no reason for it to be kept a secret , I don't think.

My guess is that Lawrence Harding, Jr. is probably still alive somewhere. I'm thinking, however, that being 66 years old now and well-established in whatever life he made for himself, I'll bet that if anyone actually is able to identify him as Lawrence nowadays and tells him about his past, he would probably be reluctant to get really heavily involved in digging it up.
JenniferS. 10-19-2010, 03:08 PM This is to bad they can.t reconnet. This case also reminds me of the one with the two little girls who grew up near each other. Never new they were sisters. There biological parents worked together at restraunt near buy. The girlsd were tsken to eat there every sunday or the one so the parents could see the them or the one grow up. They aired the story again but it was never updated. anyone remember that story?

Yep, I definitely remember that one. It's still on the UM website with no news. They had so many solid details with this case that I thought for sure that it would have been solved by now.

Yeah I don't get it. Unless the little girl andthe parents past. But even so some related should know something.
cocytus 11-30-2010, 08:15 PM It's likely that this woman took the child to an orphanage in the city that was her destination and the orphanage took the child in and simply assumed that he was the product of unwanted or teenage pregnancy. Things like often happened before the standards for social services changed in the 60's & 70's.
Somebody should start a business (if they haven't already) that compares DNA given by people to see if there's a familial link. There may a LOT of surprises if they did.
However, I agree w/ an earlier poster;this case will probably never be solved.
TracyLynnS 11-30-2010, 08:51 PM Unless the teenage girl kidnappers knew the family, how would they know the Harding's phone number to call to say they were bringing the baby back, (which unfortunately, they never did). Even if they got the number out of the phone book, they still had to be connected enough to someone, to get the last name of the family so they could look it up.
Mrs. Harding said she saw the girls at the store the day her baby was abducted, but she didn't recognize them. They followed her home and took the baby from his carriage in the yard while the mom put away her groceries.
I'm thinking that call, made three days after the abduction, may have been a hoax, especially since the caller hung up when the mom asked when the girl would be bringing the baby back.
JenniferS. 05-07-2012, 01:55 AM Well one of the problems is The Unsolved Mysteries Show uses the actor babies pic instead of an actual photo of the infant. It was said on the story that his brother Geoffrey found pictures of the baby in his moms trunk. Why not show one of those? And why do web pages like the Charley Project and The Doe Network not have him included on their sights? Ther are children missing longer then he was on those sights. Why isn't he added?
JenniferS. 06-08-2013, 10:27 PM Sure wish this one could be resolved. Still can not finding anything new online about it.
Victoria81 10-01-2014, 12:19 PM Just saw this one this morning. Lifetime is pulling out the old ones lately! I wish this would be solved. This is why UM needs to be on NBC again or ID network.
JenniferS. 10-01-2014, 04:26 PM me too. it's a shame unsolved mysteries did not do enough to help him find his brother.

I agree, UM never felt right on Lifetime or Spike...
It would be a hit on ID though.
Sad this never got solved...
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 09-02-2015, 03:35 AM That is such an unusual situation...how many stories did UM feature where a total stranger handed someone a baby on a train, like, two? Shouldn't that have been family lore in the family in which he was brought up?
JenniferS. 09-22-2015, 01:51 AM That is exactly what I have been saying Cori aka ChrisSCrush.
Judyhymesisalive 05-01-2016, 01:32 PM I remember this one. Did they ever get reunited? Theres no new info on UM Website??
Bluejay 11-18-2017, 05:04 PM Well, I just saw this one on Hulu, and they've been careful to give modern updates where possible, and there was none for this story, so he (or his family)'s still looking.
It's still on Websleuths as well. There's a post from 2014 from someone who did a little research and found this:
The population of Magnolia in 1944 was between 4,000-6,000. I counted approximately 456 African American individuals in the 1940 Federal Census for Magnolia, AR. There would be almost no way to use the censuses, which come out every ten years, (1940, 1950, etc.), to determine whether a baby was added between 1940-1950 since the 1950 census, which comes out in 2025, couldn't be compared against the 1940 census since the kidnapping took place in 1944. And even then, that would be if the woman even listed the child on the 1950 census.
James T 12-17-2017, 09:56 AM Strongly doubtful that the baby given to the old lady was even him, it might just as easily if not more so just been a young girl who couldn't cope-in that era young single mothers were frowned upon greatly, then you add being black to the list & likely having no way to support a child makes adoption or giving the child away hugely probable. If it was one of the two abductors then why not just leave the child outside the local hospital or police station, why go to a railway station & give it to somebody?
Seems very odd the old lady couldn't be traced if she lived in that relatively small area where everybody knew everybody & from searching it appears blacks were the minority race, one would think the FBI would have gone there & checked it out. That is assuming she left her name of course, just saying Magnolia & not giving any details would make it a much more difficult task.
Bluejay 12-17-2017, 01:38 PM Yes, plus the fact if the lady told the census "this is my baby" they might just have counted her as a mother with that many children.
amandab1234 12-17-2017, 02:14 PM His name was changed as well so he might not even know what happened to him. I don’t see this case being solved (sadly)
PracTz 12-18-2017, 03:00 PM I have no idea whether the younger Mr. Harding is still living and/or has progeny who are still trying to find answers re the long missing baby? If so, then I imagine, it COULD be solved if they submitted their own DNA to a popular genealogy website and perhaps get a match from someone related to the missing family member. I don't know if any of them are reading this but I think this could be worth a shot (or they could even find out about family members/branches they had no previous inkling of).
Hambone2421 06-15-2022, 04:58 PM I just saw this case for the first time. My gosh, I felt bad for the man trying to find his brother. As I was watching it, I was sure there would have been an update, but sadly there wasn't and still isn't to this day. The lady on the train seems to be a decent lead but there's no guarantee that it was even Lawrence. Just a horribly sad case.
