According to the episode guide on January 10, 1990 UM ran an episode mostly comprised of repeat segments:
================
Repeat segments on the murder of Michigan real-estate agent Jack Brown by two masked gunmen, and a story of religious faith in Pittsburgh involving a blinking statue of Christ. Also: an update on the Dale Car rip-off featuring the capture of alleged swindler “Liz Carmichael”.
================
However as some of you may be aware, every now and then UM would feature a first run segment bundled among a number of repeat segments. Cases like Mike Remier and the long lost Todd McAfee segment were first featured in episodes that were cobbled together in the manner I just described.

Although the episode guide does not indicate it, it seems as if the 1-10-90 broadcast was another one of these "cobble jobs". During his closing monologue in the previous week's episode Stack notes that the following week UM will highlight a murder investigation that had spanned over fifty years. Stack also mentions that there might be a cover-up as the prime suspect in the case is a former law enforcement official who staunchly maintains his innocence.

I've racked my brain trying to think of cases aired around this time involving police cover-up and the only one that comes to mind is that of Steve Sandlin but that doesn't fit because that case was nowhere near fifty years old at that point in time. Can anyone else identify this segment?

A book was written about the case: Breaking Blue, by Timothy Egan. It was originally released in 1992 and re-released in 2004.
