Let me tell all of you about my summer adventures meeting the greatest person in the world--LISA WHELCHEL!! I was suprised to find out she would be making a stop in Bellingham, WA, about
150 miles from Seattle. I took the Greyhound up the morning of July 21 (same day as I bought my copy of her album "All Because Of You" in 1984), and the weather was cloudy. Never been here before, I took a local bus across town, checked into a hotel and stressfully counted down the hours before I would meet the One and Only... I barely had anything to eat because I was so nervous, so I went up to King Mountain Church where she and her family would appear. I sat in the front row, feeling very agitated. Then SHE CAME OUT WITH HER FAMILY...OHMYGOD. and after they played TFOL THEME in church!!--she asked how many had seen TFOL on N@N, then how many had seen it on NBC in the 80's (I had been to a few tapings!!). THEN--"Who can sing the THEME SONG??" I raised my hand and she called on me!! I asked, "Which one--The Charlotte Rae version or the Gloria Loring version?" She said, "Oh--GOOD!!" I told her I was from the Seattle area, and after a few moments of working up the courage, I sang the first line--"You take the good, you take the bad..." And everyone applauded!! And for my bravery, her son Tucker reached into a bag and gave me this COOL BOOK on finding God in nature and the great outdoors--HOW COOL IS THAT!! She answered people's questions about show biz, meeting Steve, etc., and she invited people to come to Christ. Having been estranged from God's direction for many years, I responded... It was the GREATEST THING TO COME BACK TO CHRIST THROUGH LISA'S HELP!!!! And afterwards, they had cookies and book and photo signings, got to talk about the Cats and Dogs movie with her daughter Haven--and she even sat two seats down from me during church!! Kind of an independent type, she is!! (She has a thing for denim) And I was so excited when Lisa signed my copy of Creative Correction!!
I was so charged up I could hardly sleep that night!!
And the morning, Lisa was speaking AGAIN!! More neat stuff to sign, made fun jokes with her about a book I was planning to write about the redemptive purpose of art and aesthetics called
"Corrective Creations," which she thought was really funny:lol: !!
And I got to say goodbye to her as she and her family were headed out the door in their SUV, and I told her I would be praying for her in her travels.
Little did I know, I would be the one needing prayer, as I found a pager message that I needed to attend to as soon as I got back home... (To be continued.)
