For those in the know. Did Patty Duke have a "Patty Lane" wig and a "Cathy Lane" wig or was that her real hair being changed back and forth during the 3-year run?

Hardly an expert on the subject, but I'm sure I read somewhere that wigs were used a lot. It was practically necessitated as a time-saving factor, due to shooting schedules and the switching back and forth of characters.

On the same topic, there were a few scattered times in the 2nd-season where Patty sported something of a casual ponytail, which was exceptionally attractive on her. I wish it had been utilized more often.

There were of course times when we pretty much had to be seeing her real hair -- I'm thinking of the episode (Season 2?) when Patty attempts to be both Patty and Cathy at a party, going into the kitchen and changing primarily how her hair is arranged, right before our eyes.

Another thing I wanted to mention: With Breck as a sponsor, if I'm not mistaken, that leads me to believe that we were seeing the real hair of Patty and her stand-in perhaps more often than one might otherwise ("hair preparations" are noted in the closing credits).

I was just reading elsewhere that Barbara Feldon wore wigs pretty frequently on Get Smart, so it's a subject that comes up every so often.

Edit -- I wanted to add that I just saw a couple of bobby pins holding Patty's hair at the side in a Season 2 episode. Usually wigs were styled so that no pins or clips would be needed on top of the hair like that, so very likely another examlple of seeing her real hair.
