ORANGE, Texas - West Orange-Stark high school football player Reggie Garrett collapsed Friday night on the sidelines after completing a touchdown pass.

According to a representative at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital, the 17-year old athlete arrived at the hospital around 8:30pm unresponsive.

Doctors worked on him for nearly an hour but could not establish a pulse, said the representative.

Coaches told hospital staff that Garrett wasn't hit hard and had not been doing anything abnormal prior to collapsing.

Hospital officials said hundreds of people gathered in the lobby and parking lot awaiting word on the athlete's condition. Many of those waiting were cheerleaders and classmates singing hymns.

University of Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement, "We were recruiting Reggie. This is a tragedy for his school and high school footballl. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

An autopsy will be performed to determine what caused Garrett's death.

Sparrow funeral home is handling funeral arrangements, which are pending.
