As we sadly acknowledge the 40-year tragic passing of one of rock guitar's legends, Jimi Hendrix, on this day in 1970, we must remember that on this day also a groundbreaking album was released that truly introduced metal into the mainstream:

'PARANOID'

by

BLACK SABBATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While the rock world mourned the passing one left-handed genius, they would also hail the arrival of another left-handed axeman, TONY IOMMI!!!!!

In February of that same year, metal was introduced with Black Sabbath's monumental debut album. But their follow-up that fall would be a step away from the blues-based stylings prevalent on their first album and venture into truly unknown territory. It was heavy, dissonant, completely apocalyptic.
Everyone would know such classics as "Iron Man", "Paranoid", and "War Pigs",
but the canon would not be complete without "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Fairies Wear Boots". The album was about to be titled 'War Pigs',
but the record label forced them to change it to avoid political controversy.
The title track was quickly written as a space-filler at the last minute, but went on to become an anthem for rock and metal.
