I guess I am really not shocked about that. Carroll was just another in a loooooong line of actors who wanted to quit their show back in the tumultous 70's. What was a surprise, a pleasant surprise at that, the reason Carroll O'Connor didn't leave the show, because he knew he was the star & if he did, his co-stars and many writers, producers, directors and stage crew would be out of work. Carroll seemed like a class act.

Wow, if that's true, it shows that he was a man of true grace. There arn't too many huge stars who would put other people's needs ahead of their own...from back then and especially today! I'm so thankful to him that he stayed with the show for the run.

OH Nuts!

He was a fine man. Educated, urbane, considerate, open-minded quite unlike the famous character he played...I guess that also makes Mr. O'Cocnnor...A REALLY GREAT ACTOR - may he rest in peace.

I think his so-called "desire to leave" was a really good bargaining chip when it came to salary negotiations. And it helped, since he went on to earn the highest salary for a television actor at that time. But, I honestly don't believe he ever intended to leave.
