10. Tourist Trap (1979)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/TouristTrap.jpg
Tourist Trap is a cross between House of Wax, Carrie and Friday the 13th, and yet it stands in a class all by itself in its degree of gonzo, “should-I-laugh-or-should-I-scream” shocks.
9. Fear (1990)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Fear1990.jpg
Fear is a genuinely nerve-jangling piece of work anchored by solid performances from Sheedy, Lauren Hutton, and Pruitt Taylor Vince as the psychic murderer who gives perhaps one of the creepiest voice-overs ever.
8. The Brotherhood of Satan (1971)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Brotherhod.jpg
Largely ignored on its release, The Brotherhood of Satan is by no means a perfectly-calibrated occult classic on the order of, say, Rosemary’s Baby.
But taken on its own merits it’s a deft little horror film made up of quite a few authentically unnerving scenes.
7. Seven Notes in Black (1977)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/SevenNotes.jpg
Those accustomed to the “more is more” aesthetic of Lucio Fulci’s more famous films will be surprised by Seven Notes' slow build, though it’s still filled to the brim with the excellent cinematography, deft use of color, and, well, awkward dubbing fans have come to expect from the Italian master.
6. Bad Ronald (1974)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/BadRonald2.jpg
Don’t let its made-for-T.V. status turn you off; this is good, creepy fun and better than it has any right to be.
5. Homicidal (1961)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Homidical.jpg
Homicidal is pure go-for-broke fun, with a 45-second “Fright Meter” flashing on screen just before the climactic scene (a gimmick director William Castle used during the theatrical release to give skittish audience members a chance to run for the exits and get a refund) and a final reveal that is so insane –
not to mention laughably copped from Psycho - that you can’t help but be impressed by Castle’s audacity.
4. Don't Open the Window (1974)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Window.jpg
Like the featured zombies it’s a slow-moving tale, but if you stick with it to the gory climax you’ll find a lot to appreciate.
3. Pin (1988)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Pin.jpg
Pin is a shockingly subtle, low-key horror film featuring some really nimble performances by the main cast and a truly disturbing descent into madness of the lead character.
2. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/DarkNight.jpg
Expertly directed by Audrey Rose and The Entity novelist Frank De Felitta, T.V. movie Dark Night of the Scarecrow is truly an overlooked gem in that it manages the rare feat of building believable characters and situations and then paying them off with scenes of genuine atmosphere and suspense.
1. Onibaba (1964)
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/JamesGrec1/Onibaba.jpg
Onibaba is, quite simply, a masterful film by a master filmmaker, and all horror fans who care about quality cinema would do well to seek it out.

Wow, I'm not the only person in the world who remembers that movie? It is such a guilty pleasure of mine, I'll admit, I love Homicidal. I can't help it! Sure it's a rip-off of Psycho, but it's still so danged unusual too. I'll admit, I did not see the ending coming, Jean Arliss actually gave a startingly good performance. Maybe I'm partial because she plays a blonde-haired Danish girl named Emily (just like me).
I'm not a psychotic knife-wielding murderer though ;)
Torgo 10-05-2010, 04:46 PM Nice list.
Waiting for my copy of Dark Night Of The Scarecrow to get here.
dlemond 10-05-2010, 04:52 PM James, is your avatar from the movie Dead Snow?
I just watched that last night on Netflix instant viewing.

I know I'm not James, but yes it is. Dead Snow is one of my new favorite zombie flicks.
Torgo 10-05-2010, 05:01 PM Brotherhood of Satan is great. I'm a big fan of 70's Satanic cult flicks. It was co written by LQ Jones- who directed A Boy And His Dog(not to mention made appearance in countless TV Westerns.)
JamesG 10-05-2010, 05:02 PM Nice list.

Did you see that movie Parents? It was released as a double feature with Fear.
I was wondering how that was.

I like it a lot. It has a great feel to it...almost David Lynchian. I'd say it's a very slow burn type of flick.

I'm glad you liked Dead Snow.
Yes, my avatar is cropped from this pic:
Torgo 10-05-2010, 05:07 PM Also love Tourist Trap. Early days of Charles Band. Love that ending.

Definitely the best of the Nazi zombie subgenre...after that Shock Waves is good, and also Outpost...but then you have stinkers like Oasis Of The Dead, and Zombie Lake, and Night Of The Zombies.
Eagerly awaiting The 4th Reich....

I need zombie recommendations that are instant view on Netflix.
Or just zombie recommendations in general.
(not just Nazi)
I mean beyond ones like classic Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead.
You guys ever see Tokyo Zombie? I saw it a couple years ago, thought it was decent.

Browsing through what they have, I'd recommend:
Zombie Strippers
Zombie Town
American Zombie
Zombiemania (documentary)
The Zombie Diaries

JamesG 10-06-2010, 11:33 PM One of my favorite horror flicks that's relatively unknown is a New Zealand film from 1997 called The Ugly.
I first heard of it back in 2001 when the horror compilation DVD was released called Boogeymen: The Killer Compilation.
They put title cards and famous movie scenes from various horror films on this DVD and the only movie featured on it that I didn't know about was The Ugly.
I then wanted to track down this movie and the mom-and-pop video that was near me had it in stock on VHS.
Almost all of my friends that I introduced the film to back then loved it. I rented it so much that the owner of the store just let me have it. I since bought it on DVD.
If you can get hold of this film I strongly recommend it.
Check out the trailer:

dlemond 10-07-2010, 12:25 AM I want to check this out.
Unfortunately Netflix has this listed as a "Save"
Though you can buy it. What's that all about?
(The same with Pontypool, never got to see that)
There was a time when Netflix carried almost everything that was available for purchase- sometimes even some stuff out of print.
They are really slacking now.

I thought that "Save" on Netflix is for items that aren't released yet.
You're better off buying the DVD from Amazon, they have it on sale for under $15.00 This is a film worth owning.

Save is for items not released, but also films they no longer have. There were a few films that were once available, that now show "Save" instead of "Add"

I agree. Seems every other day I get the message that a movie that was in my Queue has been moved down to the "Saved" section.

I was sure I saw that in the theater- but its release date is listed on IMDB as September 1981. That would make me 14.
I do remember my friend Nelson's sister getting us into R movies while she and her friends went to go see what they wanted. That could be it.
I mean, I'm almost positive I saw that in the theater!

I was about 11 when it was released, one of my older sisters would always take me along with her friends to horror flicks in the theater when she had to babysit me.
And what a great time it was- the late 70's thru early 80's probably had the highest amount of horror films in the theater. I can remember looking at the movie section of the newspaper and it seemed like it was 2 pages of horror films.
dlemond 10-07-2010, 11:43 AM The Unseen is another Netflix movie listed as "Save".
This makes no sense as it was available last year to rent (had it in my Q but never got it) and it is still available to purchase.
There are a lot of movies that Netflix no longer carries that you can still buy.
What gives?

I'm assuming some of these films because they aren't current and popular might have less copies, so if a disc gets lost or damaged they don't get replaced. I know if enough people put movies into their SAVE list Netflix will usually get it in stock.
A film like The Unseen might be a different story, it's thru Code Red DVD, which will be shut down in the Summer of 2011. From what I know they have no plans on making any new movies until then and are basically selling all their movies. Netflix may not be able to get anymore titles through them.

Thanks.
Torgo 10-07-2010, 12:24 PM Anytime!
JamesG 10-07-2010, 12:26 PM Another one that I love that's relatively low-key is Dee Snider's Strangeland (1998). I admit it's not the greatest, but this is a favorite of mine.
It's picked up some interest as of late as Snider has officially begun working on the much delayed sequel.
The film had a killer soundtrack and appearances by Robert Englund and a then-upcoming Linda Cardellini and Amy Smart.
Torgo 10-07-2010, 05:25 PM I really liked it too.
Torgo 10-07-2010, 05:36 PM Amsterdamned 1988- Great horror-action.

dlemond 10-07-2010, 08:26 PM Torgo and James - what are your top 10 horror movies of all time?
I have three movies to get, and I want to pick from those in your all time list.
:)
Torgo 10-08-2010, 08:43 AM In no order:
Night Of The Living Dead '68
Dawn Of The Dead '78
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '74
An American Werewolf In London
The Evil Dead
Bride Of Frankenstein
Black Christmas '74
Halloween '78
Phantasm
Suspiria
Torgo 10-08-2010, 08:58 AM The Zero Boys 1986
Blending of action and slasher. Wargamers and their girlfriends meet backwoods psychos while on a weekend getaway.
dlemond 10-08-2010, 12:02 PM In no order:
Night Of The Living Dead '68
Dawn Of The Dead '78

The Evil Dead
Bride Of Frankenstein
Black Christmas '74
Halloween '78
Phantasm
Suspiria
I have seen most of them. For some reason I have not seen all of Texas and Suspira.
Black Christmas is undoubtably one of my all-time favorites.
I put Dead & Buried, Tourist Trap, and Dawn of The Dead (remake) on my Netflix queue, but for some reason they did not get back my last batch of movies yet. That is strange, they always get them in one day.
So I guess I can still change my list, though I get no new movies for tomorrow. Damn you Netflix!
Torgo 10-08-2010, 07:43 PM Mario Bava's Kill, Baby, Kill! 1966

For me, I always hate mentioning my own "Top 10" because I've seen so many films and it's nearly impossible for me to mention my favorites.
To me I either really like it or I really don't.
I'm going to mention instead some of my favorite obscure or lesser-known horror flicks (keeping in the theme of the thread) to give you more of a variety instead of mentioning "the classics":
Night of the Comet (1984)
Body Bags (1993)
Zombi 2 (1979) - unofficial Italian sequel to Dawn of the Dead
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Motel Hell (1980)

Just Before Dawn (1981)
Race with the Devil (1975)
The Ginger Snaps Trilogy (2000, 2004)

Just Before Dawn is excellent, I've been to some of the locations it was filmed at out here in Oregon.
Love The Burning, even though it's considered a rip-off of Friday The 13th, I actually prefer it.
The Funhouse is also excellent. Have you read Dean Koontz's novelization?
I have Dead End Drive-In on a double-feature DVD with Cut And Run.
Nice to see another fan of Caged Terror, I'm a big fan of all these low-budget offbeat 70's flicks.

Lots of flicks during that time were rip-offs of Friday the 13th.

Nope, haven't read it.

Cool. Mine is just that one.

For me that was a blind-rental years ago at the mom-and-pop joint.
Torgo 10-11-2010, 08:30 AM Lots of flicks during that time were rip-offs of Friday the 13th.
Definitely. Some of my favorite horror flicks from the 70's and 80's are rip-offs.
But even Friday The 13th Part 2 ripped-off(paid homage to) the death scenes from Mario Bava's Bay Of Blood.
dlemond 10-11-2010, 04:42 PM I'm sure you guys have seen Death Ship with George Kennedy.
Does anyone know where you can get a copy of that or if it is coming to dvd?
I know it was released overseas, if only briefly.

dlemond 10-13-2010, 12:56 AM I just watched Tourist Trap and it just didn't do it for me.
There's a few reasons for this, one of which is I didn't find it scary or as creepy as it inherently should have been.
Anyway, I'm tired.
Dead and Buried is the movie on tomorrow night's agenda.

Torgo 10-13-2010, 11:11 AM I've been enjoying the 50 Movie DVD Packs. All of the films are public domain, don't expect digitally remastered picture quality. And considering how cheap these sets cost, you can't go wrong...So far I have-
Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection
A wide range of shock and schlock classics- Ranging from films like The Last Man on Earth, and the original Nosferatu, to MST3K fodder like Swamp Women. All these films are from the Silent Era through the 1960's.
Drive-In Movie Classics 50 Movie Pack
A great wide range of genres- horror, comedy, action, thrillers, exploitation, blaxploitation, scifi....Mostly from the 1970's.
SciFi Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection
Many of the films in this set aren't exactly scifi, but.....Loads of cheesy scifi, 60's Hercules movies, Japanese monster movies, a few Jungle pictures...
Chilling Classics 50 Movie Pack
Mostly horror, a few non-horror like the Italian schlock scifi War Of The Robots. The films range from the 1940's to the 1980's. Some classics like Deep Red. Cult flicks like Bucket Of Blood, Driller Killer, Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, Drive-In Massacre...some harder to find films like Naked Massacre. And some hilariously bad stinkers like Horror Of Spider Island, The Cold, Demons Of Ludlow...
Tales of Terror 50 Movie Pack Collection
This probably has the most schlock. Everything from Manos: The Hands Of Fate to Manster, and Night Fright.
Night Screams 50 Movie Pack
This is mainly a collection of the "poverty row" flicks from the 30's through 50's. But also includes films from the 60's to 70's. A few from the 80's.

There has got to be some overlap in these, right?
Torgo 10-13-2010, 12:58 PM There has got to be some overlap in these, right?
A few have overlaps...but I don't think there's been more than like 3 or 4 movies. Still, I haven't paid more than $15 for each set. There's other sets- Comedy, Martial Arts, Family Films, Westerns, Crime, Mystery...

Which is your favorite, best bang for your buck per se?
And did you get Nightmare Worlds 50 Pack?

And did you get Nightmare Worlds 50 Pack?
That's a tough one because I've enjoyed them all, but I will go with Chilling Classics. Great range of horror...even the total stinkfests on there were fun to watch. Some of the films on it aren't available anywhere else.
There are some overlooked classics on it like Horror Express.
The non-horror are War Of The Robots(Cheeeesy Italian scifi flick), Death Rage(Decent revenge thriller with Yul Brynner), and The Alpha Incident(70's scifi thriller) and there's a 2 part episode from an old anthology series, it even has the original promotional commercial break.
I haven't got Nightmare Worlds yet, but I am planning on getting it.

JamesG 10-14-2010, 11:44 AM This one is a little more recent that virtually came and went unnoticed: Clive Barker's The Midnight Meat Train (2008).
Clive Barker mentioned his disappointment with how the film was released, they gave it a very limited release and pushed it on the DVD shelves shortly after.
The only complaint a lot of people had were the film's over-the-top use of bad CGI effects but other than that, I think this is one to check out.

In one of those horror sets...well I don't know if it is one of the ones you listed, but in one of the similar ones, there's a movie about a teacher and her students on a bus taking a trip somewhere. A group of guys basically hold them hostage and terrorize them. I can't remember the name of it, does anyone know? It had beyond awful ratings on IMDb, but I recall liking it.

It's Trip With The Teacher, it's in the Drive-In Cult Classics 8 Movie Collection. I like it a lot, but then again many of the movies I like get beyond awful ratings on IMDB. It's probably in other Mill Creek(who made all the 50 movie packs) sets since they own the rights to all of the Crown International Pictures library.

I have the Region 2 release of it, I don't think it's been released on Region 1 yet.

Thanks! I was expecting it to be horrible with a rating in the 2's, but I liked it. I usually ignore low ratings for horror (3 and 4 ratings), but once it gets into the 1's and 2's, the chances of me not liking it drastically increase.

There's quite a few horror films I like that are rated in the 1's and 2's, and not just because I consider them so bad they're good, but actually good:crazy:

Take the stairs, take the stairs. For God's sake, take the Stairs!!!
Killer elevator! Written and directed by Dick Maas who also made Amsterdamned. Maas also remade De lift in 2001 as Down aka The Shaft(starring Naomi Watts) Though I prefer the original.
