View Full Version : What Or Whom Killed Disco?!?
Brian Damage 09-06-2010, 09:58 PM I need to know what killed Disco music. The music influenced everything including lifestyles and pop culture. It spawned movies, tv shows, everybody wanted to get into the disco craze. What led to its ultimate demise?
dakert 09-06-2010, 10:48 PM I would say the Stupid 80s led to Discos demise. In early 1980 Blondie had a great song "Call Me" by the end of 1980 Blondie had The Tide Is High and Rapture and I knew disco/fun music was done
the Fall of 1980
Richie and Ralph leave Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley leave Milwaukee
Flo leaves Alice
Peter Criss Leaves KISS
The Doobie Brothers break up
Led Zepplin calls it quits
No more fun Bionic shows
No more Variety shows
Did I miss anything?
<sigh>

Uhh, the murder of John Lennon, for one.
Some rock and roll historians, such as myself, pinpoint a probable date of the death of disco as June/July of 1979 (have to look up the exact date, it escapes me now) when the Disco Demolition at Comiskey Park in Chicago took place during a double-header baseball game. People were fed up with the oversaturation of disco into every aspect of pop culture and the airwaves and demanded that rock and roll return. Which it did. One of the big albums of that summer was 'Highway To Hell' by AC/DC.
MrCleveland 09-06-2010, 11:14 PM It was just TOO big!
We got many bands and musicians who use to rock doing disco!
Elton John...

Paul McCartney...

Chicago...

And Rod Stewart....

In 1980, everyone was sick of Disco and in 1981, MTV Came along making Rock Music have a comeback!
dakert 09-06-2010, 11:21 PM The murder of John Lennon was a big one.
The only songs I remember from summer of 1979 is
My Sharona
I want You To Want Me
Pilot Of The Airwaves
I was Made For Loving You
And of Course Do You Think Im Sexy--which I liked!!!!
Does anyone have the billboard top songs from june/july 1979?

Mr. Television 09-07-2010, 01:31 AM Two words: DISCO DUCK!
I was going to say the same thing. I had that song on one of my 8 track tapes.
dakert 09-07-2010, 01:41 AM Thank you for this picture of KISS --it is one of my favorites. "Sure Know Something" was a Disco/Rocking tune!!!!
Yeah, I am sure Kiss's turn to disco didn't help matters. lol
MickeyMac 09-07-2010, 11:05 AM Disco music was cheap. With a few exceptions it was all done on keyboards and drum machines, and used the same beats over and over again (kinda like rap music). Talk about getting on your nerves.
The sad part is a lot of black music that wasnt disco got linked up with that mess.
Disco just got too big, too fast, and when fads get that intense they burn out pretty quick.
Thankfully around the time of disco there was a real movement going on music. Something that was way more influential and that mattered
PUNK ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zebra 3 09-08-2010, 12:36 AM Starsky & Hutch (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=556) fourth and final season premiered with the episode Discomania, which aired Sep '78. In May '79, Starsky gets shot in the series finale.

PUNK ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And of course, another excellent movement following in the path of punk--
NWOBHM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saxon, Motorhead, Angel Witch, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, Girlschool, Samson, and of course, IRON MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judas Priest was kind of tied in there, too, though they had their start a little before then.
And of course, NWOBHM was responsible for the finest music in the world:
THRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the words of the mighty Saxon:
WHERE WERE YOU IN '79, WHEN THE DAM BEGAN TO BURST??!!!!!
dakert 09-12-2010, 10:30 PM "Tragedy" 1979 by the Bee Gees is better than ANY song of 2010!!!
isiahthomas 09-18-2010, 10:44 AM I love 70's disco music and there's a documentary about disco i wanna get from Amazon.com that's hosted by Gloria Gaynor. I think it's called Disco:Spinning The Story. Disco music is better than any of this garbage music out now.
catlover79 09-18-2010, 11:33 AM George W. Bush. KIDDING!! (Hey, he gets blamed for everything else!)

isiahthomas 09-20-2010, 10:13 AM Remember Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby song? That song was a disco hit. Why was she moaning on the song? Hahahahahahahahahaha. Her daughter who's a actress named Brooklyn Sudano is hot. She played on My Wife And Kids tv show with Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell. I love these 70's disco songs. Can somebody post the links to these songs? I don't wanna hear snippets of these songs. I wanna hear the whole songs. I would really appreciate it.
