Most TV series released on DVD usually have entire seasons released in a boxed set. There have also been TV series in which entire seasons are split into two boxsets such as The Love Boat, My three Sons, Mannix, and Gunsmoke. CBS DVD/Paramount usually does this.

Then there are a few that sometimes do both. They would release the two-part set first and then release the complete set.

A couple that I know of are "Route 66" which released Seasons One and Three in 2-Volume sets and then released the complete season shortly after.

"Glee" released the first half of the first season first; then they will be releasing the Complete First Season as well as Vol. 2 of the first season on the same day.

This just drives me crazy. It's just a way for greedy companies to make more money.

Then there are also those that decide to release certain seasons in two parts whereas all of the others had complete sets.

Some examples are:

"Sex and the City" had the final season in two sets.

"The Sopranos" had the final season in two sets.

"Nip/Tuck" had the fifth season in two sets.

"Rescue Me" had the fifth season in two sets.

ABC Family does volume instead of season releases for most of their shows.

Melrose Place switched to 2 volumes for season 5 after doing complete season releases for seasons 1-4.

Also, and I hate it when this happens, is when they decide to release Part 1 and then the series gets stalled so that's all you get.

"Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" had Vol. 1 released (first 25 eps.) and that's it so far.

"The Jetsons" had Season 1 complete. It then went to Season 2: Vol 1 and then stopped.

I wish they would put a whole season in one set instead of breaking them up myself. The most outrageous one is My Three Sons. That show was on for 12 years and when its over there is going to be 24 volumes. This is a half hour show and each season can be put in one set.

I think the main reason Glee was released in a 1st volume was to recoup the costs of music licensing and copyrights
