Movie Reviews: Machete

Robert Rodriguez’s Machete is the kind of horror romp that critics like to call a gorefest.

All of the Mexican characters in it, led by Danny Trejo in the title role, are inflated stereotypes of Mexican bad men; all of the Americans in it, save one or two, are stupid and greedy.

The film has already sparked considerable debate on conservative talk shows.

Critics are debating its worth as well, but politics doesn’t figure into their commentaries.

Claudia Puig writes in USA Today that Machete is merely “eccentric and playful, though not recommended for the squeamish or humorless.”

But Amy Biancolli in the San Francisco Chronicle maintains that it is “monumentally gruesome and just as monumentally cynical.”

On the other hand, Tirdad Derakhshani pours praise on the film, writing “It’s hard to think of another film this summer that offers such sheer anarchic fun.”

Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune complains that the movie “is at least half an hour too long for its own good,” while Stephen Holden writes in the New York Times: “The pace is swift, the tone playful, the screenplay peppered with one-liners.”

I'm gonna wait for this to come to video. JamesG, have you seen it yet? What character does Lindsay Lohan play? I'm surprised any director would hire her because of the issues she has LOL.

I actually plan on seeing this sometime today.

Actually, Lohan was hardly seen on any promotional material and did not attend the film's premiere. There was rumor that the director, Robert Rodriguez, did not want her there and uninvited her but he hasn't addressed it.

Lohan plays "the nun with a gun".

What did he used to do before he became a actor? I saw him in Steven Seagal and Eddie Griffin's Urban Justice movie.

When he was teen he was pretty much a street thug and engaged in petty crime and drug addiction.

He became a boxer while serving a long sentence at San Quentin and went through rehab treatment.

He still speaks over at prisons and schools to tell kids about his hard life, the mistakes he made, and how he overcame them.

Oh ok. He looks like he was a thug when he was younger hahahahahahaha. That's good that he goes to prisons and schools to speak to men to try to get them to change their life.

JamesG, have you seen Urban Justice? It's a good flick. There's a hispanic cute girl that works at a store below the apartment that Steven stays at in the movie and she talks to him often. She's hot and i think she had a small part in Next Friday movie with Ice Cube.

Yes saw that one. One of the better of Seagal's straight-to-video work.
