FOX Adds Jamie Foxx Sketch Comedy Show to Its Midseason Schedule
by Nick Zaino
posted Sep 1st 2010

Jamie Foxx is returning to his sketch comedy roots on the network that gave him his first big break.

According to Deadline, FOX has given a 12-episode order to a new sketch comedy show, tentatively titled "The Jamie Foxx Project" for midseason.

Foxx worked on a sketch comedy pilot for the last pilot cycle, but this is a different show with a few holdovers from the previous cast and writing team.

Affion Crockett ("The Boondocks", "Nick Cannon Presents: Short Circuitz") will star and produce, and Carl Jones will write and produce

The new show is reported to have much in common with "In Living Color", the classic FOX sketch show helmed by the Wayans family. That show introduced Foxx to the public at large, and featured pop culture parodies performed by a talented ensemble cast.

In all likelihood, "The Jamie Foxx Project" is just a placeholder name, considering Foxx has already starred in "The Jamie Foxx Show".

Foxx/King Entertainment will produce the show, along with The Tannenbaum Co. It's hard to imagine musician and Oscar-winning actor Foxx joining the cast and appearing on a regular basis, especially since he seems to be taking to producing these days.

But it would have to be tempting to Foxx to jump back in for a cameo somewhere, if only for old time's sake.

VIDEO: See Which Celebrity Impersonation Stumps "In the Flow's" Sketch Comedian Affion Crockett

Tell us all about this new sketch show that you are doing.

It's my brainchild. I'm known for doing a lot of characters and impressions of people and we've got this show on FOX coming on Sunday night at 9PM. It's packed with energy, it's "In Living Color" for 2011 and beyond.

We have a lot of special guest coming on; Chris Brown and Russell Simmons, a lot of people.

Jamie Foxx is an executive producer so tell us how he got involved. Have you worked together before?

No we went to the network independently and I had an idea for a sketch show and he did too. They saw the perfect opportunity to merge the two together with me being 'the young guy' and have him introduce me to the world.

What's your favorite celebrity to do an impression of?

The one that I get requested to do the most is Jay-Z.

I like to do Chris Rock, Russell Simmons... Russell became a fan of mine from doing his impression that he wanted to do a sketch with me where I play Russell Simmons with him. There's two Russell Simmons' in that sketch.

Where did you discover that you had this ability to do impersonations?

As a kid I would always do cartoon characters and I would also do people I knew from around the neighborhood. Also my mother with her West Indian accent, so it was kind of early on.

Is there ever a person that you can't figure out how to impersonate?

I think the hardest that I've ever had to work on was Barack Obama. He has that voice that shifts cadence and has a deep register so you have to go in really deep and then go up-and-down.

That the new Fox series "In the Flow With Affion Crockett" didn't exactly burst out of the gate Sunday with its premiere episode should not come as any surprise. Affion_0 With some animated reruns as a lead-in and seemingly zero marketing, "Flow" was lucky to get just 2.5 million total viewers. Dumped by Fox in the netherworld that primetime becomes in late August, the scheduling of "Flow" tells you all you need to know about the faith the network has in the series (none).

Maybe Fox was trying something counterintuitive here. Typically, a network hires a brand-name performer to lure audiences in. But as someone who is largely an Internet sensation to date, Crockett may prompt curiosity as to how a relatively unknown comedian manages to get his own sketch-comedy show on a broadcast network.

But the conceptual strategy behind "Flow" makes sense. In a world of increasing ratings parity between a broadcast and cable series, why not try to rip off a series that worked exceedingly well for Comedy Central--"Chappelle's Show"--and put it on a network that made urban comedy work back in the 1990s, with "In Living Colour."

This would be a good time to level charges of reductive racism--oh, just because Crockett is black, he should be compared with "Chappelle's" and "Colour?" Well, yes. It's abundantly clear that "Flow" was modeled on the "Chappelle" format, with pretaped sketches introduced by Crockett in front of a studio audience, and A-list cameos from the hip-hop world including Russell Simmons and Snoop Dogg. Crockett has the same amiable charm as Chappelle, and the same taste in comedic targets.

That said, Crockett smartly addresses the elephant in the room in the second episode of "Flow" by lampooning Chappelle himself. The sketch has Crockett pretending he reached out to Chappelle for his blessing to do his own show, only to encounter the former Comedy Central star smoking amid a field of marijuana plants, offering paranoid warnings like, "Have fun making shows with the white devil!"

Even with the content restrictions that come with being on Fox, "Flow" doesn't have that confined vibe so many broadcast shows give off when they try to be racy. Imagine what Chappelle would have been like were he on Fox.

Of course, that inevitable comparison becomes the problem. Crockett is not the second coming of Chappelle. But Crockett is talented enough that had Fox bother to promote and schedule "Flow" as if they gave a damn, this series could have had a chance.
