View Full Version : How did Jo and Rick meet? Tootie and Jeff?
catlover79 08-29-2010, 12:12 AM I'm not that far into the series yet, and I know we have a couple of more months before the release of S5 on DVD. I was just wondering how these couples met. I know that in the 2001 reunion movie, Rick was still married to Jo (although Scott Bryce was no longer playing the role). Jeff had since died, although he and Tootie had a daughter together. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
Smartboy 08-29-2010, 12:37 AM I am not sure about Jo and Rick, but I do know the situation with Jeff and Tootie. They met during the first year of the Edna's Edibles era. He walked into the store and she flirted with him. At this stage in the game, he was a senior in high school. They remained together during his first year at college which was at Penn State. They were then on again, off again for a few seasons. I believe that it was in the second to last season that they finely got engaged.

She also found out he couldn't read when they first met. That was another one of those special episodes that the FOL was famous for.
I can't really remember how Jo and Rick met either. It's been a long time since I saw these episodes.
catlover79 08-29-2010, 12:59 AM Thanks, guys!! S5, to be released on DVD on November 2, is actually the beginning of the Edna's Edibles era. So it won't be long until we get to see Tootie and Jeff's meeting. Rick, I believe, doesn't show up until the final season.
JoPol_wannabe 08-29-2010, 03:56 PM How did Rick and Jo meet. Well Rick would frequently come hang out at the childrens center that Jo worked at but it wasn't till the ep where Rick thought he was going to die by his 30th birthday like all the other male members of his family that you saw him and Jo really starting to like each other.

Thanks!! Was that in the last season? I know their wedding was the third-to-last episode, or something close to that. I also read somewhere that Nancy McKeon really lobbied for Scott Bryce to get the role, because she was a big fan of his work (as Craig Montgomery) on the soon-to-be-defunct soap opera, As The World Turns.
Johnny be good! 08-31-2010, 02:02 PM They later got married in the same season.

Yup - I caught the wedding episode on YouTube. I thought it was very touching that Jo chose Blair to be her maid-of-honor.

It really was.
ZeldaGilroy 09-04-2010, 09:37 PM The episode where Rick thinks he is going to die before his 30th birthday is actually the first episode he appears in. He is in one more episode after that where Jo's dad hates him because he is worried about his daughter being with a good-for-nothing musician. The next episode he appears in is the one where they get married. A little too rushed of a romance if you ask me, but then again I have never been a huge Rick fan. :)
catlover79 09-04-2010, 09:41 PM Well, at least we know their marriage lasted and produced a daughter, even though neither Nancy McKeon nor Scott Bryce showed up for the reunion movie. Now back to Tootie and Jeff - it sounds like their courtship was longer and much more drawn out. Was Jeff always played by the same actor?

Jeff was always played by the same actor. Tootie and Jeff met when he was a senior and like someone else mentioned she discovered he was illiterate. He went off to college (apparently he learned to read very quickly) and he ended up breaking up with Tootie who was still in highschool. Later, Jeff came back to town to visit and he and Tootie started seeing each other again. They had a long distance relationship while he was in college studying marine biology and she finished Eastland and started school at Langley. Jeff proposed to her at I believe the beginning of the last season, but they did not actually get married on the show. I was so sad they killed him off in the reunion. I would rather they had killed off Rick, especially since Scott Bryce didn't appear in the movie anyway.
catlover79 09-04-2010, 09:48 PM Thank you, Billie!!! :D

You're welcome! I love this show so much and I know a lot about it if you have any other questions. I think I've pretty much memorized all 9 seasons. :)

S5, which comes out on DVD in November, is the beginning of the Edna's Edibles era, if I'm not mistaken. That should be where we first meet Jeff, right?

Yes, Todd Hallowell first appears as Jeff in the season 5/episode 5 "What Price Glory?" He actually made his first FOL appearance earlier playing Tootie's boyfriend Zach in a season 3 episode.

But at least they brought back Edna's son, Raymond.

I agree with you there! Raymond was an idiot in that movie and he was always at Blair's beckoned call. It really irritated me. But then again, as much of a fan as I am of FOL, the whole reunion movie irritated me. The characters were too over-the-top. Blair was a joke, Mrs. G. was a little too silly for my liking, fake Rick was a disappointment, and the preteens were poor imitations of their parents. I did like Nat and Tootie though. I thought Kim Fields especially did an excellent job portraying a grown up Tootie (Dorothy.) She was my favorite in the movie!
catlover79 09-06-2010, 03:40 PM I did lose it when they showed Blair's license plate: "BLR WTCH".

That was pretty funny!

Plus, it was a very clever touch - I think there were lots of her peers from Eastland that would concur.
Jude The Obscure 09-13-2010, 03:19 PM Also the picture of Jeff that Tootie showed in the reunion movie was not Todd Holliwell. Perhaps the actor refused his likeness to appear since the character was killed off.

When I first saw the movie, I wondered if the actor who played Jeff had, in fact, died. I have since learned that he had not. In fact, the post that I am responding to spells out that he had not! Does anyone know why they made him dead for the sake of the movie?

No idea.

Just be thankful they had a reunion.
