Movie Reviews: The Last Exorcism

Compared with the no-budget likes of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, The Last Exorcism, which cost $2 million to make, is a spendthrift affair.

For the most part, critics aren’t impressed.

Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel calls it “modestly chilling.”

Sean O’Connell in the Washington Post describes it as “unnerving.”

Other critics remark that the film isn’t half bad except for the last five minutes.

Indeed, Christy LeMire of the Associated Press writes that it is “one of the scariest movies to come along in a long time — until the last five minutes or so, when it completely falls apart.”

Robert Abele adds in the Chicago Tribune: “As with many well-intentioned scare flicks, the wrapping-up feels dissipated and obvious, but for a good while The Last Exorcism makes for an atmospheric, character-rich stab at movie fright night.”

Jesse Singal writes in the Boston Globe: “There may once have been a good and a bad film fighting for the soul of The Last Exorcism, but in its final moments, cinema’s dark forces triumph emphatically.”

And Peter Hartlaub concludes in the San Francisco Chronicle: “With the finish line in sight, the filmmakers botch the ending so badly you’ll swear M. Night Shyamalan was flown in to direct the last few scenes.”

Okay, what happens in the last five minutes.

I read some reviews and a lot of them say it is pretty good for about the first 3/4 of the movie.
This did get a 70 on rottentomatoes.com

Any movie that gets compared to Blair Witch--I STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!

If you must know, here is what happened.

My advice is to watch the movie first and then read the following so you will understand it all better and why people are complaining.

SPOILERS!!

It is revealed that the possessed girl's family minister is a ritual satanist.

He performed a ritual on the girl to impregnate her with the spawn of a demon.

At the very end, the exorcist and his film crew discover the satanist minister performing another satanic ritual on her as she gives birth.

The satanist minister throws the demon baby into a big bonfire to bring the demon to life.

The exorcist then attempts to fight the demon.

Meanwhile the film crew gets slaughtered by the Satanist cult in ways that were prophesied earlier in the film.
