View Full Version : Bill Cosby Never Understood 'All in The Family's' Popularity

In the mid 1980s I recall seeing comedian Bill Cosby on the Phil Donahue talk show. He was pushing his own mediocre sitcom, at the time, and as it had been #1 in the ratings, for a few years, it was drawing comparisons to Norman Lear’s breakthrough comedy, All In The Family, from over a decade earlier, which similarly had been a ratings titan. Cosby then showed off both his envy and stupidity when, on national tv, he declared that he did not think All In The Family a good show because its lead character Archie Bunker was an unapologetic bigot. Yet, that was the POINT! The show’s episodes did not follow in the now noxious habit of tidying up every episode at its ending. Similarly, like most real world bigots, Archie Bunker was unrepentant, although late in the series run, viewers found out part of Archie’s bigotry stemmed from emotional sufferings he endured as a poor Great Depression era child.

It's Pretty clear that Bill Cosby does not like any Television Show that he not in. He hate just about every TV show that ever aired.

Archie Bunker offended alot people of all races so this doesn't surprise me that Bill Cosby had issues with the show. I, however absolutely loved Archie Bunker and found him hilarious. Being a Catholic and a Polock, I laughed even harder at those jokes. LOL!

I like Bill Cosby because he is a humanitarian, but sometimes he is too much of a goody two shoes. Then again maybe he was jealous because All In The Family is a good show, and Cosby was one of the worst shows in history.

It's clear that Cosby goes more for the gentle humor, as shown in all of his shows. I think this was an important show in the history of television, but it's not for everyone.

That's kind of funny because I never understood the appeal of "The Cosby Show" myself.

AITF was reality while the Cosby show was pure fantasy. Worse, it was fantasy masquerading as reality. Like most of you I do like Bill Cosby (particularly his albums) but his self-righteousness and smugness can be grating. I'm sorry he can't appreciate AITF for what it is.

OH Nuts!

The thing with Archie is that he insulted people across-the-board; he was an "equal opportunity bigot", a charcterization that seems oxymoronic.

That Bill Cosby takes the stance he does, shows he missed the whole point of the show. And if he doesn't think AITF is all that, he's entitled to his opinion. I'm sure we could find people who thought Citizen Kane wasn't that great - or I Love Lucy - or Casablanca, etc. But MOST people do seem to agree that AITF was one of the greatest shows ever. And I'm one of them!

I 'm with lucyandethel, Cosby's show never rang my bell either. If someone gave me the entire Cosby's series I'd trade it for an ep of AITF in a nannosecond.

I actually preferred "A Different World" over "The Cosby Show," so I guess I was thankful for the spinoff.

As far as AITF, I would have Cosby watch some of the best episodes (like the refrigerator repair ep with Ken Lynch) and let him try not to admit that at times it was GENIUS...! I think the series had its share of quiet moments and subtle, gentle humor as well. And most importantly it tended to be downright funny!

I agree. The Cosby show was boring, bland and very, very over-rated.All In The Family is a brilliant show. You cannot even compare the two.I never understood why The Cosby Show did so well in the ratings. One good thing I can say about The Cosby Show is it's probably better than any show they make nowadays, but that really is not saying much.

This ^!

Plus, it was subtlely racist in a more offensive manner than All in the Family EVER was...with the whole "We are successful BLACK people and we want to rub it in WHITE America's faces....ha ha ha! "

Now it was never racist in the way George Lopez was (portraying white folk as dumb and shallow) but like has been said, the "smugness" of it all.

I never really considered The Cosby Show racist. Yes, they were successful and black, but nothing I would say that constitutes racism. As for George Lopez, can't stand the guy.

ALL IN THE FAMILY!! ALL THE WAY! All In The Family is much better. Much funnier and more well written. I like The Cosby Show when I was younger like in Third and Fourth grade up until around 9th Grade when I kind of grew out of it and discovered Three's Company and All In The family(Although I discovered ALITF few yeas earlier but I didn't exactly understand the Humor until I was a little older and when I got older and understood it more it became my favorite and my likeness for Cosby faded and disappeared when I started to discover other shows like TC and The Jeffersons and others). TCS was my favrotie show for quite a while but as I got older it just became to peachy, Sugary and annoying that it got on my nerves much like Full House did a lot earlier. I bought the Cosby show DVD's But I don't even watch them anymore or at all, I just don't laugh at TCS like I use too anymore or don't laugh at it as much. and is no longer a Favorite of mine. The Cosby show is just so unrealistic! NO FAMILY IS THAT PERFECT ! I am sorry but that is the truth. And that is one of he reasons why I like Roseanne and Roseanne has became a favotie of mind because in some way I can kind of relate it to it more and more then I ever had with TCS. Too me TCS You really can't compare them but All In the Family is Just Funny and Well written and is never boring! ALITF is one of the greatest show of all time and Archie Bunker I think is one of the best characters ever. All In the family was Just Funny and timeless and you never knew what Archie was going to say or do next. It was just a Great Show and So Realistic! It always had me in stitches and never failed to make me laugh!

I might make some TCS fans and maybe even Full House Fans Mad, But in my opinion TCS and Full House are in a league of it own: The Two goody Two shoes, Unrealistically Perfect Family, Peachy, Syrupy, Sugary and annoying! TCS is not as bad as full House but I couldn't stand full house after Fifth grade! And It's worse then TCS. I am sorry but No Fmaily is that Perfect! It's was more of a fantasy world where it was dream that you wish your family could be that perfect but sadly no family can be that perfect, We all have our Family problems. The Cosby show and Full House are After-School Kiddies show's in my opinion, The shows that kids should watch to keep them away from the real word problems and Adult Humor, And keep All In The Family and Roseanne for Adults only. Cosby show and Full House should be shown on Disney because they are Disney types of shows. They are like an After school Public announcement program !. They get on my nerves now and Full house is just Pure Annoying as ever.

That episode was a backdoor pilot for a sitcom that never made it, so it doesn't count.

In Cosby's defense, the seasons that had both Theo and Cockroach were the best. Once Theo graduated (and cockroach left) from Highschool and College (how the hell did that ever happen?) to actually become a professor I turned off the show for good

"All In The Family" WAS Ground-Breaking because it broke ALL The Rules...and then some! BOTH Norman Lear and Carrol O'Connor were BOTH Liberals, but O'Connor as Archie Bunker who that character is a Conservative Bigot would outrival Heathcliff Huxtable anyday.

For "The Cosby Show", it was okay. But you rarely see The Huxtables go to work, even though Heathcliff (Cosby) and Clair Huxtable were a Doctor and Lawyer...respectfully.

I gotta respectfully beg to differ. I did not see that at all. They weren't trying to rub it in White America's face. But that positive image needed to be showcased. Personally, I loved "The Cosby Show" and I see the appeal. It was a part of me growing so it will always be the number one sitcom in my book. I think Bill Cosby just doesn't like shows with people behaving poorly and using bad language, he thinks it sets a bad example. He is right in a way, All In The Family broke a lot of barriers and at times was very funny, but it also deteriorated the landscape of TV and since then the censors have gradually allowed more and more bad language and violence in TV shows. Some of the shows on TV today are atrocious. It's all Norman Lear's fault.

I agree with you. The "groundbreaking" shows become critical darlings and get tons of awards. The shows are usually good so we allow them to push the envelope a little because it is a good show. Then they push the envelope further until the next "groundbreaking" show takes over the process. I'm 50 years old and I have seen this first-hand from the original run of AITF.

When it comes to Lucy I can understand where she comes from. It was not her type of comedy. And when her show came on in the 1950s and TV was still new and there was lots of restriction and tight censorship on what could be seen and heard. The article I posted once was a comment she made in the early 1970s just when All in Family was starting. TV changed dramatically and they began to get away with more and things you heard or seen was not ever heard during the 1950s because of the censors who they were not going to dare cross. so it was very new to her when it first start as it was too lot of peoples. she did eventually grow to love All In the Family and embraced it and watch it same with Maude. It was very ground breaking and daring and she understood that. Bill may not have understood but Lucy did. She also like other shows and admitted other shows were just as good as hers!

Three's Company was also one of her personal favorites! Another show Bill did not like.

It's all true. Bill Cosby is a total hypocrite. When his son Ennis was murdered in the '90s, his out-of-wedlock daughter decided to come out of hiding and she wanted to sue the father that abandoned her......BILL COSBY. Bill Cosby not only fathered a child outside of his marriage, he is a hypocrite who preaches about family values.

I like "The Cosby Show" myself. I think it's a great 1980s sitcom that is usually pretty funny. A sitcom can be more than this of course, but at its core- it should be funny, since it's a situational comedy.
Some of "All in the Family" is also quite funny. I have seen episodes of both and I don't like "All in the Family" all that much, but it did make a point on many issues, even if Archie Bunker served mainly as a caricature of conservative values. I think he and Mike helped expose each other's bigotries somewhat, but it would've been nice to see a more balanced view of a conservative who's not a bigot, as well as a more balanced view of a liberal, for that matter.
Bill Cosby has a right to his opinion. There are some things I agree with him on and other things I've seen him say in interviews and such that I definitely don't agree with him on.
As to hypocrisy regarding family values- (which, by the way, is a pretty loaded term in itself- those values really should be defined for exactly what is meant by them)- ultimately, we're all hypocrites because we all hold to some form of morality and consistently break it quite often if we're honest.
That is why, for my part, I acknowledge that I have broken God's moral laws often and hold to the salvation offered through Christ's death and Resurrection. Grace is such a wonderful concept from God.:)
We just need to be willing to be honest to admit that we've fallen and that we need help to get back up again.
Anyway- as far as I'm concerned, I like both shows to some degree- but I would generally stick with shows that are funny and quite clean- like "The Cosby Show" and "Full House". (though even those are not always the cleanest.)

The Cosby Show was "squeaky clean" compared to All in the Family

Not everyone likes every famous series and Bill Cosby is one man with an opinion.

I talked to a guy whose father hated MASH and refused to watch it or have it on in his house, because he was a former serviceman and found the show disrespectful.

My father hated The Carol Burnett Show. I mean hated, hated, hated Carol Burnett. He thought the skits were too long, not funny and stupid. This was back in the day when we only had three channels to watch. In say, 1974, there were three channels, and no internet, so TV was a big thing in the evenings, especially in the cold wet, winter.

My parents did not like Lucille Ball in anything, and I sort of agree with them. I think I Love Lucy was a hit because it was the best thing out of a very limited offering in an exciting new medium. Her two 1960's shows are dated and awful. There are many shows that are now on that have been on for many years that I do not watch, or did not like. It's a matter of taste.

Coming from a military family I had a real hard time with this episode. The end is all warm and fuzzy because the dead soldier's dad accepted that wuss who couldn't muster up enough guts to serve his country! If I had been Archie I would have kicked his ass out - along with Mike's! Mike never deserved to live there and mooch off of him all those years anyway and then once again he brought someone into Archie's home that he KNEW would be a problem for Archie but as always - disrespect. If it had Mike's house - different story, but it was Archie's.

I'm black and consider All In The Family to be one of the greatest show's of all time. The writing is excellent and holds up to this day. I also consider The Cosby Show to be one of the greatest show's of all time, Cosby is just naturally funny and the humor though clean is very good. Cosby has a right to his opinion, I mean Dad didn't really like All In The Family either because of Archie's bigotry. Though he does recognize it was a well made show now. I look at like Archie was a product of his time and didn't really know any better. He was a lot like the "George Jefferson" and "Fred Sanford" characters.

I am a white male in my 40's, and my parents are about the same age as Coz. They also like shows with almost no swear words or overt sexuality in it. It is more of a generational thing, than a black/white thing. I wasn't there, but my parents once rented "Goodfellas" of all things and my mother said that my father ripped the tape out of the DVD player about 10 minutes after.

Another thing is that Cosby is actually (I think from what he said) somewhat conservative and has railed against modern culture in the past, especially those of African Americans. Wouldn't surprise me in the least that if he voted last year, he probably would have picked Romney.

I also think that since his son was murdered, Cosby has turned into someone more morose, and more bitter about life. Cannot blame him. Like I said, he was from that Depression era generation where people had to be tough and strident, especially a poor, inner city kid like he was.

I don't understand your logic, just because a person doesn't like a certain TV show or a character has nothing to do with their polictical stance. Cosby has always been very outspoken about young youth and the importance of education and the importance of once dress and to carry yourself with dignity and respect. I have never sat down with Cosby so I have no idea if his attitude changed once his son was murdered, I would imagine so, who's wouldn't. Also I seriously doubt that Cosby voted for Ron Paul because he's such a huge Obama supporter.

What is wrong with a person not liking a show because they do not like the character or the show?

I get so tired of this refrain. Yes, I fully admit there most likely are a number of outright racist people who don't like President Obama because of his racial background. (Which technically is mixed, by the way.) (And yes, racism is certainly wrong and unacceptable. Especially for all who claim to be Christians as Christ commanded us to love one another.)
However, this doesn't mean that everyone who is not for him must automatically be racist. Many may disagree with his policies but still respect him as President because this is the position that America voted him into. And whether we like him or not or like his policies or not, we do still need to respect the President and pray for him.
I daresay Bill Cosby may have disagreed with a number of the predominantly white Presidents that preceded President Obama. However, I wouldn't call Bill Cosby racist against Caucasians for disagreeing with previous Presidents.
But I also have sympathy for Mr. Cosby as he no doubt experienced racism first hand, growing up in a time when it was more openly a part of our government system and society (i.e. separate bathrooms, water fountains, swimming pools, schools, etc. - forced to acquiesce for Caucasians on the bus and other places)
Thankfully, we don't have any of that stupidness anymore- at least not in those outright methods. But I can understand Mr. Cosby's concern that of perhaps more subtle racism that may still exist. And while I'm sure this is true, this still doesn't make it right to assume anyone who disagrees with our current President must be racist.

One thing that both shows have in common is that they both went on for way too long.

AITF stopped being AITF the moment Mike and Gloria moved out of the house. The premise of the show, which was having all four of them living under the same roof, was destroyed.

I think the Cosby Show started out great, and Cliff was a strong father figure early on... but it didn't take long for the men in the show to turn into complete wusses.

The episode where Mike and Gloria leave, should of been the last episode. That final scene with Archie and Edith sitting there in the living room, sad, as the camera zooms out, that should of been the final note. It dragged on and on after that. I only watched a few episodes after that, painfully. The writing only got worse. Archie Bunker's Place? Once and that was it. Now, as I watch the series in order, when I get to the Mike And Gloria departure, I stop after that then go back to the beginning.

I find Cosby's remarks interesting but not surprising. The Cosby Show and AITF were from two different eras: Feel Good 1980s to AITF's social awareness 1970s. Plus Cosby's audience aimed at professional, educated and upper middle-class Americans both White and African American. AITF audience consisted of lower to middle class, high school graduate working class men usually white.
Cosby was able to get away with his style of comedy until Roseanne toppled him in 1989 brining back social awareness comedy that was not popular during good feelings Reagan Era. I doubt Cosby would have understood Roseanne either.

During the late 1980s Cosby was attacked by many people for failing to address key issues especially race. There was no racial tension on the show unlike AITF which seemed unrealistic because NYC had serious racial problems during this period of time. Although I like the Cosby Show it could have done more on Race. The Only episode I can recall that dealt with race was during the last season of Cosby when Claire talked about her taking part in a Civil Rights protest with some college friends. It was to little to late:wave:

That is what was so great about the Cosby Show! They were not a black family, they were just a family. Did Family Ties have to address what it is like to be white? That wad the magic of The Cosby Show, no one really saw them as black, although they were proud of being black. The so called Civil Rights leaders are not happy unless blacks are shown as inferior or persecuted.

But uh, a successful, educated African American man who was a doctor married to a successful African American woman attorney? How was that racist? Ridiculous.

As I have said Cosby Show was basically aimed at the middle-class,urban crowd that generally have moved beyond race.
