I'm old enough to remember first hearing it on the news!! Back then, the news started at 6, and they didn't break into any programming to announce it, like they probably would these days. They actually waited until the news broadcast!!

Was a paperboy back then, it made the front page in all three local papers.

I was in my house playing on the floor and the tv was on in the background. The news came on and it was the top story. I was stunned. I remember I ran next door where my parents were visiting with my neighbors to tell them the news. I always liked Elvis. I remember that his last concert was played on tv not long after his death..

here is a bit of irony for you on the day elvis my family and i were leaving to go to tenn and yes we did get caught in some heavy traffic on the way

Me, too. I was also old enough to remember hearing it on the news.
Really a shock. Even after all these years, still a shock.

I saw ELVIS in concert a few months before his death at the Richfield Coloseum in my hometown of Cleveland Ohio
