View Full Version : I was in a car accident today...
catlover79 07-29-2010, 11:56 PM ...and dislocated my left knee, suffered cuts and bruises and a bit of whiplash (due to the airbag, most likely). I was driving to Akron to visit my friend and her sister - we were going for a picnic and a hike. I was in the right lane on I-77, which turned into an exit ramp - and when I realized I was going to wrong way, I tried to get back on the freeway, and the next thing I knew, despite looking over my shoulder - I was spinning, lost control and the back of the car crashed into a median. I later learned the reason I'd lost control of the car was because I got to close to the bumper of a semi!!!! Thank God, I was the only one in the car, and the truck driver wasn't hurt (and only suffered minor damage to the truck's bumper). In fact, according to the policeman, the other driver was more concerned about me. I called my friend, who was close by, who with her sister, waited for me until my parents came.
The part that grieves me most is that I totalled my brother's Neon - his baby. My own car was still in the shop. I just hope to God his rates don't go through the roof because of me. That's what hurts more than the physical injuries - that I ruined my brother's favorite car - and it's all my fault!!!! This has just been a horrible year all around. :crying:
:( I hope you feel better soon. :bighug:
catlover79 07-30-2010, 12:42 AM Awww, thanks, Sara. :bighug:
Chelsea 07-30-2010, 12:44 AM The part that grieves me most is that I totalled my brother's Neon - his baby. My own car was still in the shop. Don't worry about it. At the end of the day, a car - while it can have sentimental value, is still just a piece of machinery and it's important is infinitesimal compared to the safety and well-being of another human being. . What's important is that you're OK.
Marvo301 07-30-2010, 01:11 AM I agree with Seth. A car can be replaced. You can't! As much as your brother loves his car I have absolutely no doubt he loves you even more! I hope and pray that your injuries will heal quickly and fully. :bighug:
catlover79 07-30-2010, 01:27 AM Thanks, guys! Another pic!!
Janice 07-30-2010, 01:44 AM I'm sorry about your accident, Monika. It sounds like it could have been a whole lot worse. I'm glad you're okay. I'm sure your brother understands and would rather have have you than his car. You had an Angel on your shoulder today.

OH Nuts! 07-30-2010, 03:25 PM Oh Monika I'm so sorry to hear about all of this. But like others have said it could have been worse. Hope you make a fast recovery - sounds like you were really shaken up. I'm sure everything will work out with your brother - what's really important is that you're OK.
catlover79 07-30-2010, 03:30 PM Thank you, everyone, for the prayers and well wishes. Just when I thought this year couldn't get any worse, it did. :(
80sTrivia 07-30-2010, 03:57 PM Oh, no, Monika!!! I'm glad to hear that you made it out of the accident alive and (almost entirely) intact! Here's hoping that you have a quick and complete recovery!

MickeyMac 07-30-2010, 04:14 PM I too was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. Some idiot pulled out without even looking and ran right into me, and now there is a nice dent on the side of my car that I so cannot afford to have fixed right now.
Enough about me. Monika I am so glad you were not seriously hurt, and wish you a full and speedy recovery.
dlemond 07-30-2010, 04:21 PM Sorry about your accident. Glad that you are ok.

Retro4Life 07-30-2010, 11:43 PM Darn it, I'm sorry I missed this thread yesterday!
Monika, as others have said, the important thing is that you are OK. I know it's been a rotten year for you in many ways, but you do have much to be thankful for (as I'm sure I don't need to tell you).
Keep your chin up (and your leg!) and have faith that tomorrow brings with it endless possibilities for joy and happiness. Take care!
catlover79 07-31-2010, 12:37 AM Wow, when it rains, it pours. Get well soon.
My feelings exactly!! Thanks, everyone, again!! :bighug:
James28 07-31-2010, 03:19 AM Sorry about your car accident, Monica, good thing you survived it.
James 07-31-2010, 03:37 AM Monika, you said you were on I-77, went onto an exit ramp, and realized you were going the wrong way. I don't quite get you. I thought all exit ramps had traffic going in the same direction.
At any rate, I hope you recover quickly! What you went through sounds very scary!!!
Tweety 07-31-2010, 06:08 AM You've got a whole lot of people praying for you Monica ... get well soon!
I'm quite sure that your brother is very glad that, if anything had to be totaled, it was the car, and not you :)
They made more cars yesterday.
But there's only one Monika.
We're really, really glad you're still with us

Well, I was in the right lane and didn't realize it had turned into an exit (the Barberton exit). I tried to get back over, and...the rest is history, just like the car. :(
James 07-31-2010, 12:48 PM Well, I was in the right lane and didn't realize it had turned into an exit (the Barberton exit). I tried to get back over, and...the rest is history, just like the car. :(
I hate when that happens! I would have just exited and then gotten back onto the freeway. It happened to me a week and a half ago in Indianapolis on the Sam Jones Expressway (the new connector between I-70 westbound and the airport) and I-465; I took the wrong loop for I-465 south, and I just waited for the first non-interstate exit, and then I headed north.
Nobody got hurt. Simple as that.
ThomasE 07-31-2010, 01:57 PM Oh, no. I had a chance to read your post just now. I did not know and am sorry about that sweethart. I only went to the political board last night. Monika, I really am sorry. We believe God for a speedy recovery and healing for you along with a new vehicle for your brother.
Back in November 2001 while still living in Tampa, FL. I had no computer so I was on the way to my job to use their computer on a sunday afternoon so I could log on to Sitcoms On Line and hold one of my periodic "Facts Of Life" contests in celebration of the reunion movie that was to air later that night. As I'm driving, I cross an intersection with a green light but someone on the opposite side makes a left turn and we collide then she hits another truck at another red light. All three cars were totaled and I wound up in physical therapy for five months. Many of the board members at the time were supportive of me recovering (TJ and Seth a.k.a.Devastation26, I remember you guys were supportive).
So, I got through my period and you will get through yours. Plus you have many members that care about you on this board I don't know, I think the love and support from others can make the recovery process go smoother. I'm sorry you've had a hellacious year. It's great you can use the board as a way of escape. I know I have many of times. Here's to better days for you. We all need them. You're on the prayer list, hon! :bighug: :bighug:

I wish I HAD stayed in the exit and gotten back on the freeway. I wish I'd asked my brother to hook his GPS back up so I would've stayed in the right direction anyway. All the what-ifs keep running through my head. Not that it makes a difference now, but it's a good learning experience!!!

Thank you!! I have to see an orthopedic doctor on Monday, and then we'll discuss physical therapy. Thankfully, I only have to wear the brace for one more day. I don't know how much longer I'll need to use the crutches or when I'll be able to drive again. Tell the truth, I'm not that eager to get back behind the wheel any time soon! Besides, my head and neck are still very stiff and sore so I wouldn't be able to look behind me anyway.
The Great One 07-31-2010, 04:53 PM All of the best to you for a quick recovery!!!
browneyes106 07-31-2010, 05:08 PM I'm glad you are ok. I hope you recover well.

Exactly. The car can be replaced. You can't.
I'm sorry this happened to you, Monika, but I'm glad it wasn't worse.
catlover79 08-02-2010, 01:06 AM Thanks again, everyone!! The knee brace is off and I see the orthopedic Dr. in the morning. The knee is still very sore and swelled up but at least I can bend it (though not without pain)!!

catlover79 08-02-2010, 03:20 PM Got some bad news - I went to see the orthopedic specialist today and not only does he want the brace put back on my knee - he wants it on for several weeks!! He also thinks there may be ligament damage so I also had to have an MRI taken today. I just hope and pray to God I don't have to have surgery!!!!!!
OH Nuts! 08-02-2010, 03:54 PM Monika I'm so sorry to hear about this turn. But you may not need surgery and just to take it easy and let things get all right again. I'm praying for you, as I'm sure many others are here. Hang tight. There are a lot of people who care about you.

Retro4Life 08-02-2010, 06:00 PM I pray you do not need surgery, Monika. I know you have been out of work a while and I'm sure finances are an issue; if you do require surgery, I'm sure there are agencies that may be able to give you some aid.
Best wishes, and hang in there!

For that I am truly grateful.
catlover79 08-08-2010, 02:23 AM Here's what I look like, 9 days later, at my nephew's birthday party. I can put a little weight on the leg, but it hurts when I bend it too much. Also, I am not barefoot - I'm just wearing clear plastic jelly shoes. Even under normal circumstances I wouldn't walk barefoot on gravel.
cyberalias81 08-08-2010, 02:40 AM Cool shades. Glad you don't need surgery. What does your shirt say? Also, do you need a coat hanger for leg scratching ?
catlover79 08-08-2010, 03:29 AM Cool shades. Glad you don't need surgery. What does your shirt say? Also, do you need a coat hanger for leg scratching ?
Thanks! The shirt I bought when I was in Tombstone, AZ a few years ago. It says: "Tombstone 1879 Arizona: The Town Too Tough To Die". I haven't quite gotten to the coat-hanger stage yet, but there are times when the itching is simply horrible!!!
Tweety 08-08-2010, 06:25 AM So glad to see that you're getting up and around. Yes, the crutches and the cast are cumbersome, but it sure beats being glued to a bed 24/7.
Which one is your nephew, the infant eating the spoon or the big, tough Bulldog linebacker who is escorting you around the grounds?
Retro4Life 08-08-2010, 11:42 AM Great to know you're back on your feet, Monika. Here's hoping your recovery continues to go smoothly.

They are - life with them is never, ever boring. :D
catlover79 08-09-2010, 12:46 PM Here is the car I was driving (my brother's since my own was in the shop) after it was towed away and I was taken by ambulance to the closest hospital. My brother and dad later drove to the towing place and got these pics. There are more pictures, but I think you get the idea. God had plenty of these - - on that stretch of freeway that day.
MickeyMac 08-09-2010, 02:59 PM Wow its a blessing you came out of that in one piece.

Dr. Thong 08-09-2010, 06:27 PM Once again, a car can be replaced.
A person can't.

catlover79 08-15-2010, 12:07 AM I'm sorry you were in a car accident.
Thank you, sweetie!! It looks like you and I are both on the mend from horrible (yet entirely different) things. You are in my thoughts and prayers, Jenny - take care of yourself!!! :bighug:
catlover79 08-15-2010, 01:53 AM Here I am 16 days after the accident - using my friend Jim as a human crutch!
catlover79 08-24-2010, 11:39 PM Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers - I see the orthopedic doctor tomorrow. We'll see where we are and where to go from there. Without the brace on, it still REALLY hurts to bend the knee. So I imagine we'll talk about physical therapy and so on.
Thanks, everyone!! I'll be sure to post an update when I get one.
cyberalias81 08-24-2010, 11:42 PM Good luck.
Tweety 08-25-2010, 05:45 AM You were never out of our thoughts and prayers, Miss Monika.
Let us know how things go, and stay in the Word.
catlover79 08-25-2010, 04:17 PM Thanks, everyone!!
The doctor says the knee is healing nicely (although I did cry out in pain when he started to bend it) and to keep the brace on for the next two weeks. At that time, I see him again and we will discuss physical therapy, etc.
Thanks again for the prayers and support!!
Marvo301 08-25-2010, 04:24 PM Woohoo!!!! I'm glad your knee is healing well! Thank-you Lord for answering our Prayers!!!!
Retro4Life 08-25-2010, 05:47 PM More great news, Monika. I hope your recovery continues to go smoothly (and hopefully with minimal pain). You're still on crutches, I take it?

That reminds me of an old joke. A guy goes to the doctor with an injured hand. As the doctor is treating him he asks "Doc, when my hand heals will I be able to play piano?" The doctor assures him that he will in fact be able to play piano when his hand heals. The guy says "That's great because I couldn't play piano before!"

catlover79 09-07-2010, 06:33 PM I have an appointment with the orthopedic doctor tomorrow, so please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks!! :D
Mr. Television 09-07-2010, 07:08 PM Congratulations Monika. I'll keep those prayers coming. :woohoo:
catlover79 09-08-2010, 04:18 PM The immoblizer is now off my knee!! I'm now wearing long pants for the first time in weeks (and good thing, too, because it's cold out today). I have to go in tomorrow to have a knee sleeve put on, to keep the kneecap in place overnight. Then I start physical therapy in a couple of weeks. My first appointment, to meet with the rehab people, in fact, is on my birthday (9/20). Not the way I would've imagined ringing in #31, but hey. I still can't bend the knee all the way back and I cried out in pain this morning when the doctor tested it, but hopefully my rehab will take care of that in short order. I don't know when I'll be able to drive again, but I'll keep you posted on that, too. Thanks again, everyone, for the prayers, support and kindness. You are the best!!!!

catlover79 01-29-2011, 06:30 PM Hard to believe it's been 6 months to the day that the accident occured. On the whole, I feel OK most of the time. I've been driving again since mid-September, and have taken physical therapy excersises almost every day since then. However, when the weather becomes very damp, my knee is in horrible pain. So thank goodness for my heating pad!! I appreciate all your prayers throughout these past few months. The love and support I've gotten from you all has touched me deeply. God bless you all!!! :bighug:

Congrats on sticking to the therapy and enduring what had to have been some really stressful and draining times, emotionally and physically. As one of your favorite characters might have commented, "You got spunk!" :)
