View Full Version : Half Solved Mysteries
RobinW 07-28-2010, 06:03 PM I think it would be a neat idea to devote a thread to those odd cases on Unsolved Mysteries that were technically "solved", but still left a lot of jarring loose ends and nagging unanswered questions  . A few examples:
The Freedom 2: This is definitely a prime example of a very fascinating case with a very unsatisfying ending. It involved two guys, John Russell and Bob Dozier, who claims to have been involved in a boat accident in the middle of the ocean until it became apparent that there was likely no accident at all and they were just perpetuating an elaborate fraud. Two women who were on the boat, Sherry Russell and Kristen Tomlin, were never accounted for. Anyway, both men were eventually captured, served a couple years for insurance fraud and were released. But we never found out what happened to the women ! It seems likely that Sherry Russell was in on the fraud, but no one knows if Kristen Tomlin was knowingly involved and or if she's even still alive. UM originally had an update from a couple who claimed they sold their boat to both men and the wife after the incident, so it seems she at least survived, but there's been no follow-up on her.
Georgia Ann Boyd: This was a strange case where this woman with a mysterious secret past married a man named Dereld and had two kids with him. She was threatened and harrassed by some unknown people before dying of a cerebral hemorrage. Anyway, Dereld starts looking into her past and thinks the people harrassing her may been members of a biker gang she used to belong to. Whenever he tries to ask questions, everyone including cops and media figures advise him to back off. Anyway, the whole segment is dark and ominous, but when the update hits, it suddenly morphs into a "lost loves" segment! Dereld has an emotional meeting with Georgia's original family and meets the kids that Georgia had in a previous marriage, but we never find out who was harrassing Georgia or why all these people were mysteriously covering up details about her past! It is possible Dereld did find out some unsavory things about Georgia, but out of the respect for the family, the show decided not to reveal them.
Danny Paquette: He's murdered 20 years after his mother, Reena, was burned to death and the cops ruled it a suicide  , and people wonder if he was killed because he might have seen the man who killed her. However, it's been revealed that a man named Eric Windhurst killed Danny for reasons not related at all to his mother, so Reena's death remains an unsolved mystery. The man who may have been responsible for her death was in prison for another crime, but was released on a technicality around the time the segment aired, so her killer may still be out there...
Sea Lion Killings: Two men are arrested and punished for the murder of Bobo the sea lion, but are found to be not responsible for the murder of Bruno the sea lion (who was the main focus of the segment), so they never did found out who Bruno's killer was. Kinda unsettling to find out there were so many different people out there who felt compelled to murder innocent sea lions  .
Johnny Lee Wilson: I only include this one because Chris Brownfield, the man who confessed to the murder of Pauline Martz, claimed he had an accomplice that night. After Johnny was pardoned, did anyone ever find out if the accomplice was named or caught? Since Brownfield claimed the accomplice was the one who actually killed Pauline Martz, I always wondered if Brownfield just made him up, so that he could do a good deed and get Wilson off the hook without having to confess to committing the actual murder.
Any other frustrating examples you can think of?
justins5256 07-28-2010, 06:26 PM I saw one recently that bothered me and that fits the criteria: The Chevy Chase Bank Robber.
During at least one of the robberies he handed the teller a note claiming that he had a partner in the bank who was also armed and watching the tellers.
Then there was an update a year later indicating that the Chevy Chase Robber was positively identified as Bernard Strick and that he pleaded guilty and got some prison time. No mention of the partner.
I wonder if the police investigated the possibility of an accomplice or if it was just presumed he was bluffing. In the end, I suppose it was a bluff. What the threatening note indicated should probably be taken with a massive size grain of salt. Telling the bank tellers that they were being watched by someone who could pick them off if they didn't comply with the demands is a powerful threat in itself and under the circumstances, who would really call the bluff?
For some reason, a tiny part of me still wonders if he did have an accomplice who got away. I think it is highly unlikely, but it's not impossible.

I'd say it's most likely it was just a bluff as bank tellers are taught not to provide any resistance and will never question if the robber's threat is a bluff, no matter who ridiculous it may sound. I remember the movie, "Out of Sight", where George Clooney's character robs a bank by simply pointing to some random stranger and informing the teller that the man was an accomplice and would shoot the manager if she did not hand over the money.
Oooga Chucka 07-28-2010, 07:03 PM I'm not sure if this counts, but the Orange Sock Murders was kind of half-solved. They cleared the husband, but made no other progress. I don't know if you can call that half-solved, but they did devote an update to it...

For that one, I'd consider half-solved to be if they arrested someone for killing one of the women, but then found out they didn't kill the other one.
MegtheEgg86 07-28-2010, 08:04 PM Rebecca Young. All the evidence strongly pointed to a single suspect who police were poised to arrest, but couldn't. There was even an eyewitness to the crime, who after initially calling police never recontacted them, despite an appeal on UM.
The "Lost Loves" story of that fellow named Darnell (?) and the woman he was in love with who called herself Georgia. The whole segment was centered on finding out who she really was and the details of her (apparently shady) past, but the update only told us Darnell had reunited with Georgia's family, with no mention of him ever finding out anything further about her.
Micki Jo West. Marvin Lee Irvin, the ex-husband of one of West's friends, confessed to her murder and told police she was buried in a Kansas cornfield with two other women. Those women they found, but West is still missing.
soilentgreen 07-28-2010, 08:26 PM Sherry Eyerly; they found out who her killers were (William Smith and Roger Noseff) but were unable to locate her remains.
A fragment of Michael Rosenblum's skull was found, but it could not be determined how he died or why his remains were in that vicinity. (My guess is accidental or deliberate overdose).
justins5256 07-28-2010, 09:07 PM Just thought of two more contenders:
Devin Williams - his body was eventually recovered (partial skeletal remains, I believe) yet there is still no good explanation for how he died, or why he was acting so strangely when he disappeared.
Corinne "Punky" Gustavson - her killer was identified as Clifford Sleigh and he was convicted of her murder. However, the UM segment tried to link her death with an earlier abduction and molestation of another young girl named "Mandy". That case is still unsolved.
RobinW 07-28-2010, 09:29 PM Sherry Eyerly; they found out who her killers were (William Smith and Roger Noseff) but were unable to locate her remains.
Good choice. Another glaring loose end in that case is Daryl Wilson, the guy who committed suicide when the psychic led the police to him. It's not clear whether that guy was really involved or if being falsely accused murder prompted him to kill himself.

The whole segment was centered on finding out who she really was and the details of her (apparently shady) past, but the update only told us Darnell had reunited with Georgia's family, with no mention of him ever finding out anything further about her.
Yeah, that was the same one I mentioned in my original post (his name was Dereld, not Darnell). It seemed like there was some massive cover-up involving Georgia since NO ONE Dereld encountered wanted to talk about her, but that was all forgotten about once they did the update. She definitely lead a wild life though since she had SIX kids before the age of 22! Georgia's family seemed like nice enough people too, so I always wanted to find out why she was estranged from them.
XCalibur 07-28-2010, 11:22 PM Yeah, that was the same one I mentioned in my original post (his name was Dereld, not Darnell). It could be that Georgia's family was not connected with her shady past, she may have simply been a runaway who chose to live a wild life, just because thats how she was and not because of anything her family did.
The threats and stalking may have been because of things entirely unrelated to her family and they may know nothing about it. Once she died its entirely possible whoever was stalking her lost interest, no need to harrass a dead person after all.
justins5256 07-29-2010, 10:52 AM Thought of a couple more...
Susan Harrison - she was a missing person and her estranged husband, Jim Harrison, a suspect in her disappearance when the story first aired on UM. Some time later, there was an update indicating that her body was found. Her murder is still unsolved, to my knowledge.
Michael Henley - it was believed that he was abducted in 1988. Then he was thought to be a young boy depicted bound and gagged in a photo discovered in a Florida parking lot in 1989. However, we now know that his remains were found in 1990 not far from where he disappeared and foul play is not suspected.
RobinW 07-29-2010, 01:09 PM Just thought of two more:
John & Linda Sohus: They think they found John's remains and Christopher Chichester/Clark Rockefeller was captured, but Linda's whereabouts are still unknown and they haven't found out if Chichester was responsible for what happened to them.
Julie Cross: The female secret service agent who was murdered by two robbers. One of them was captured and is currently on death row, but I don't think they've ever found the other one.
xxxxmattxxxx69 07-30-2010, 01:19 AM Jim Boumgarten(Sp?) was trying to uncover family secrets of his past. He found out about family he didn't know existed but was never able to meet his long lost twin brother as Jim died

Easily one of the scariest updates ever.
Oldschooler81 07-31-2010, 04:24 AM Good idea for a thread. I've thought about this alot too, especially in the later years when it was just a text based or short update that didn't really give details.
I agree with Georgia Boyd especially, that's one of the ones I thought of. I definitely believe she was on the run from outlaw bikers by 1977. It wouldn't surprise me if she was a teen runaway and did some wild things, but when she tried settling down and starting a new life with Dereld a few years later, she sadly couldn't really escape her past life. I don't think she would've been a criminal or anything, but could've just ticked off the wrong person. I think for the viewers' curiosity, at the update they probably would've mentioned something just to tie up the loose ends, but maybe they felt it just "wasn't important" considering her relatives were found, and the most crucial part of the mystery was solved.
I'll also add Dan Wilson. The guy in Washington state in 1988 who started on a trip to see his kids (who lived with his ex-wife) after he had a blowup at work. I do believe the carbon monoxide poison probably leaked into his car, explaining his unusual behavior and contributing to what happened.
The weird thing was how they didn't find his body initially (I saw it on one of the recent reruns, and at that time had no update), but in 1997 it was found very close to where his car was. The most nagging thing was the guy at the homeless shelter in Montana relatively closeby whose signature matched Dan's (according to his mom and cousin).
I wonder if he might've lived a few days or weeks afterwards, possibly even making it to the shelter (maybe he got a ride). That would explain why nothing was found when they initially searched the area. I'd hate to think he would've been okay and still alive at the time, but later tried to make it back to his car and died after getting lost... yet that does sound the most plausible. :(

It's definitely most likely that it was her former biker gang that was harrassing her, so that solution probably isn't much of a mystery. The loose end that always drove me nuts were the cops in Georgia's former town advising Dereld to drop the matter when he tried asking questions about her. He also got the local TV station to agree to air her photograph and ask viewers to come forward if they had any information about her. They wound up only airing it for a few seconds before also telling him it was in his best interests just to let it go.
While the family may not care any more, I'll always be very curious about why there seemed to be a massive cover-up surrounding this girl.

Yeah, that one is very similar to the Devin Williams case that was also mentioned in this thread where a missing guy's body is found, but no one knows why they were displaying such bizarre behaviour even though there may be a simple explanation for it.
Got one more to all to this list: Tim Molnar. He drives away from his parents' home in Florida, abandons his car, and goes missing for several years before his body is eventually found in Wisconsin. Unfortunately, no one knows how he died or what he was doing all the way up in Wisconsin.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 08-01-2010, 04:24 AM Yeah, that was the same one I mentioned in my original post (his name was Dereld, not Darnell). That was the first one which jumped into my head as incomplete and frustrating as hell. As I recall, her husband who was making the inquiries had two girls who were hers from a previous marriage and at least one who was theirs. She told and/or led him to believe that the harassment was coming from the father of the two girls or people sent by him. When the father was found, he proved to be a PERFECTLY NICE, normal man who seemed to have had no CLUE where those girls were all that time, and so can't have been harassing them! I don't remember anything about her having a total of six kids with, it seems, at least three men, but if the father of those two girls wasn't responsible for the harassment, who the hell was? And what was all the intrigue about "just back off and forget you ever knew her"? Was her ex or anyone else ever able to shed light on any of this? Or were the makers of UM themselves threatened and/or just left out the main part of the story to avoid retribution, or so as not to compromise an ongoing criminal case?

This case definitely would be the ultimate example of a drastic change of tone in an UM update, as it felt like they were updating a completely different story than the one they aired! I guess our hope of ever finding out the whole truth in this story is if one of the family members or people involved the case decided to post in this forum, which has happened here many times before.
Of course, if it was the family's request to not air any additional details about Georgia's life that could tarnish her image, then I can totally respect their privacy. She did die of natural causes after all, so there is no crime that needs solving.
egswanso 08-03-2010, 03:42 PM There's also the possibility that the harassment and "cover-up" had been played up a bit by the segment and Dernel, so the reality was much more mundane then the story.
justins5256 08-03-2010, 04:43 PM How about Matthew Chase? When the case first aired he was only missing. Then there was an update indicating that his remains were recovered. Interestingly enough, the remains were in police possession at the time the UM story on Matthew's disappearance first aired, but the identification had yet to be made. His murder is still unsolved.
Drakken 08-03-2010, 04:54 PM Well, it's really a full-blown whodunit murder mystery.
soilentgreen 08-04-2010, 01:54 PM It's definitely most likely that it was her former biker gang that was harrassing her, so that solution probably isn't much of a mystery. Those incidents (if they legitimately occurred the way UM described them) make me think there was more to it. Possibly Georgia/Edith had been an informant or previously trafficked by the bikers and had knowledge of criminal activities.
Her family may have had little more information about parts of her life than her husband, because she had voluntarily dropped out of sight for so long.

She's the woman who moved out of state to be with her sister, got a job and a boyfriend and everything was going well till one night when her boyfriend broke the stick shift (or something) in her car. Then she went out at night to go get it. Then was found dead inside it in an apartment complex the next day.
That one always really bothered me. Then many years later there was an update where they had traced the DNA to a deceased suspect. So we know who but not why or if the suspect was the drug dealer her sister mentioned, if the boyfriend knew more than he offered, or what the strange burn marks on her legs were. The update really gave nothing except that DNA had been matched.
So, it's solved, but still kind of a mystery. Anybody have any more information on this one?
XCalibur 10-16-2010, 05:34 AM Does Judith Hymes count as one of these? I would think so.
The update segment said the police received an anonymous letter that Judith had an illegal abortion and died as a result of it. The police seemed quick to believe the letter was authentic even though they had no idea who sent it or how they were connected to Judith, and no body was ever found. I thought that was somewhat strange. I'm not saying the letter isn't authentic, it could very well be. But if so who made the phone calls and why?
If there was no crime committed, then why wouldn't the letter writer just come forward?
Bizzare case for sure. But I guess thats why some of these cases get on Unsolved Mysteries.

I recently googled the name of the alleged killer, Freddie McKinley and could find very little information on the guy, only that he was in jail in Louisiana on unrelated crimes.
Since McKinley is dead, its possible the motive or what caused the burn marks may never be revealed. He might well have been a serial killer whose worst crimes were never known.
bell83 10-16-2010, 06:22 AM As for Georgia, has anyone given thought to witness protection as the reason for a "coverup?" Just a thought...
dynoguy88 10-16-2010, 05:14 PM Georgia Ann Boyd: This was a strange case where this woman with a mysterious secret past married a man named Dereld and had two kids with him. I remember watching the update as a little kid and still thinking, "Wait a minute. There's still about a hundred questions left unanswered."
What always bugged me about this case was why it was so difficult to get information about Georgia. The whole town (including the police and a radio station) knew her history and what she was about. Yet her poor ex-husband couldn't get an answer out of anyone.

It's very possible that the anonymous letter could have come from a nurse who was involved in the illegal abortion and if she had a hand in disposing of the body, I guess she would still be privy to a crime. I have no idea how statute of limitations would work on an illegal abortion and helping to cover up a death that was a non-homicide.
Another unsolved element of the mystery is Dr. George Hadju, the abortionist, who fled the country and was never caught, and could very well have died of natural causes by now.
xxxxmattxxxx69 10-17-2010, 08:43 PM John Feiga could count. I remember he murdered his wife or girlfriend and then he was killed himself and is unknown to who killed him. I can't remember the name of his victim
egswanso 10-18-2010, 05:08 PM Depending on the definition of a 'half-solved' mystery, almost all of the cases that appeared on UM could qualify.
TheCars1986 10-18-2010, 08:09 PM There was one case that involved a man and his wife (I can't recall their names) and their truck was found out in a mountainess region in the snow and the wife's body was found and people suspected the husband but then his body turned up a few days or weeks later and some thought he was a victim as well and it was never really solved. Does anyone know the actual names of the segment I'm referring to?
TracyLynnS 10-18-2010, 08:43 PM The first case that came to mind was the Diana Robertson murder and disappearance of her boyfriend, Mike Riemer. However, Mike was never found (their very young daughter was dropped off at a store, IIRC) so it's probably not the case you're thinking of.

TracyLynnS 10-18-2010, 08:56 PM Hugh and Diane Harlin.... same kind thing. The wife was found dead, the truck was abandoned, and the husband has never been found.

WishfulDreamer 12-25-2013, 01:59 AM Did Lisa Albert actually have a part in the arson plan, or was it just her husband? Also, what on Earth was her sentence when she got caught? I can't find anything about it online.
TheUntouchables 12-25-2013, 03:52 AM Murder of Anita Green - Mel Green got a life sentence for conspiracy to commit murder, but the actual hitman has never been caught.
WishfulDreamer 05-06-2014, 05:13 AM Why Dennis Keith Smith murdered his sister and where he placed Carolyn Killaby's body. :(
RobinW 05-06-2014, 12:39 PM I'm not sure if they count as "half-solved mysteries", but there are quite a few solved UM cases where a perpetrator is deceased, but you really want to know the motive for their crime.
A prime example would be the Joe Owens case, where his remains were found in the woods after he became a wanted fugitive for the murder of his wife. I really wanted him to be captured because I was very curious to find out why a 70-year old man with no known criminal background would suddenly feel compelled to murder his wife after several decades of marriage. It would be one thing if he had hit her and killed her accidentally or something, but he flat-out shot her in the head!
I'm also curious about the murder of Mike Emert, which was solved when DNA was matched to a suspect named Gary Krueger. However, since Krueger is already deceased, we'll never know what his motive was.
Clytemnestra 05-07-2014, 01:28 AM Beverly McGowan case - we know that her killer was Elaine Parent, but who was the man in the cleopatra wig? I think the UM update (or I read somewhere else) that they believed she had a male accomplice (her brother), but then I think I read on here that it was really Elaine in drag? Does anyone know the definitive answer, if there is one?
ScaryFog 05-07-2014, 12:52 PM The Crew of the Sarah Joe is half solved. The remains of one of the crew was found buried on a small island along with the boat. The others were never found and likely lost to the sea during the storm. Someone illegally fishing likely buried the body as a sign of respect but didn't want to notify the authorities to avoid trouble.
WishfulDreamer 05-31-2015, 09:33 PM Who the mysterious caller was in the Swedish Hitchhiker case. Even though it was never proven, it seems very likely Loren Herzog was responsible (with or without Shermantine) considering his track record. Thankfully this guy was a good enough person to not only phone the Swedish Consulate, but also UM after the story was aired. I'm just curious to know how he learned the information and if he was a friend or acquaintance of Herzog.
amandab1234 06-01-2015, 12:55 AM Would Arthur Jones be a "half solved" case? There was an explosion at his house which was caused by propane. They couldnt find his body until a few weeks(maybe months) later, they found it a few feet away and it was determined he died from skull fractures. It couldve been foul play or it couldve been injuries from the explosion. No one really knows. It's odd they didnt find his body when it was pretty close to his house. Lazy/Sloppy police investigation perhaps?

I may be offbase, but I thought the update mentioned the authorities determined that the explosion which killed Art Jones et al. was an accident?
It is kinda freaky to think about. The guy was blown so far away from the initial site of the explosion that his body was not recovered until much later.

I was always under the impression that Jones might have survived the explosion, but was left so disoriented by it that he wandered away from his house and accidentally fell off a nearby cliff. It sounds like a pretty similar solution to the Wanda Jean Mays case.
ctgrumpybear 06-08-2015, 09:56 AM Would the RT.29 Stalker case count because Darrell Rice pleaded guilty to the attack on the woman who they believed survive the rt. STalker
Corkys-Place 09-13-2015, 02:10 AM I guess any case where a Missing Person has been found deceased after several years. They're no longer missing but obviously there's still a mystery as to what happened to them.
theero 09-20-2015, 07:07 PM Beverly McGowan case - we know that her killer was Elaine Parent, but who was the man in the cleopatra wig? I think the UM update (or I read somewhere else) that they believed she had a male accomplice (her brother), but then I think I read on here that it was really Elaine in drag? Does anyone know the definitive answer, if there is one?
Yeah i read that someone mentioned, it was Elaine dressing up to look like a man in drag. However, the travel agent described a male, who had a male looking body, skinny and lean and muscular. Elaine as far as we knew was a curvy woman with a bug bust. If and how she managed to make herself look like a man is beyond me.
I think it was definitely someone she hired to throw police off her tracks. The guy was suppose to try and impersonate Bev. thats why the wig and glasses were used, since Bev had that hair style and same thick glasses. Robert Stack said that they believe his name was Sam, where did they get this info from?
TheCars1986 09-22-2015, 10:50 AM This may be totally off topic, but in the Neil Gott segment, there is a scene showing the FBI arriving at Gott's house, only to find it abandoned. Stack says they found a dead dog tied to a tree in the backyard, and the "only sign of life" was from a neighbor who wandered over and told the FBI that he was watching Gott's dog for him...but the FBI does not become suspicious considering the fact that the dog was dead in the backyard! It was just a really unusual part to have that inserted in there, and at first I thought the neighbor was going to be found out to have helped Gott and his family make an escape, but no...that was the one and only utterance of this guy and it made zero sense to me.
WishfulDreamer 11-21-2015, 03:45 PM This came to mind today. The murder of Lulu Corshane. We know Rick McCue didn't do it (even if he did do horrible things after his release), but no one has ever been charged with her murder. Personally, I think Russell Healy is the most likely suspect. He had motive (she was cheating on his brother), access to the apartment, and one of Lulu's daughter heard him talking.
His widow says that he would have confessed had he been guilty, but that's not necessarily true. Not everyone is going to confess on their deathbed.
I have a theory that Lulu and Russell may have had something going on between them, too, and perhaps jealousy was the motive. I know this is total speculation, but he seemed a little too close to her. Why was he constantly walking into the apartment? Does anyone else know more about this case that could shed some light on this?
My theory is that she returned to the apartment, they showered together (possibly something sexual occurred before that , so no evidence found at autopsy because of the shower), and then he killed her. Because she was strangled, her daughters couldn't hear her fighting for help. Very sad and brutal. I think in the struggle she did get the contusions, leading to the blood in the shower, on the towel, and on the wall (possibly brushed up against when her body was removed from the apartment).

From watching the re-enactment, it just looked like an incredibly awkward situation when Russell walked into Lulu's apartment and saw Rick sitting there before they went on their date. I know that if I was Rick, I would have felt pretty antsy, knowing my date had a fiancee in prison and that the guy's brother has just discovered you were going out. It always seemed strange that Russell didn't make more of a scene over finding out that Lulu was going out with another man behind his brother's back... unless, of course, Russell had been doing the same exact same thing with her! It just seems like too much of a coincidence that Lulu would be murdered right after the date ended, so I find very likely that spending the night with another man set Russell off and prompted him to kill her.
