I found this out from a friend of mine who had a long chat with the VEI dvd company. They will be the way the originally aired! I won the complete series in a contest so I'm excited for the arrival of this new set.

Was there any problems with music clearances?

Since I was told they were uncut there should be no problems with music clearances but never sure what music will be cut out if it even has to be. As much as Nell sang on the show I would not be shocked if they did cut some music.

She sang
Me and My Shadow
Georgia on My Mind
Sing a Song
Love Lift Us Up
Heatwave
Charlie Brown
Toot Toot Tootsie
Big Girls
Soldier Boy
Chapel of Love

and a few more I can't remember but if it was a song Nell sung it. I have recently been watching old recordings of the show so I remembered these few songs

She also sang "Easy" and "America" in one of my all-time favorite episodes, the 2-parter, "Second Chances". Hopefully, those will be included because they were some of her best performances on the series. :)

I am in Toronto so my set arrived today.

The outer box is not as sturdy as I would have liked but inside the 3 snap-cases each have six discs very well-housed.

Artwork is basic but nice. At least they have they correct Season pics corresponding with the packaging.

So far I skimmed though the Andy Gibb episode on my PC and the video looks great. "Up Where We Belong" was included so hopefully there won't be any other music clearance issues.

All in all, I am so happy VEI finally came through. Fans should rejoice that this series is now complete!

Wow! Thanks for the quick rundown Kasey! Can you describe the pics used? Are the cases the thin viva cases or the thick ones?

Happy to hear "Up Where We Belong" is in tact. This could prove to be the set of the year!!! Can't wait to get my copy. I just got even more excited for this set. :happyface

Robert, the cases are the thicker ones like CBS has used for Vega$ and S2-4 of Laverne & Shirley.

Each plastic case has a large pic (Nell & the Chief, Nell & Joey, etc.) with smaller headshots of everyone else in little bubbles. The cast photo that appeared on the S2 box is split up on the discs showing everyone's heads separately, etc.

The pics are nice but nothing really new or rare that I haven't seen before.

Of course, the content is the main thing.

Thanks Kasey! I know what you mean about the cases. I also have S2-4 of Laverne & Shirley (where's Season 5??? :D) The layout sounds nice. Can't wait to see them. It sounds like a handsome set. You are right. Content is what's important. Thanks again for your descriptions! Gives us something to visualize until we get the actual sets in our little hands. :D

If you have old recordings of the show or it is on in your area watch those and the wait won't feel so long. If I watch an ep or 2 a day the wait is not so long. Amazon told me my package should be here by next week!

When skimming through that episode and any others, did you notice if there were any original NBC midway bumpers, like the ones they would show going into a commercial. They were into'd in Season 3.

I just opened the set and I must say it is one beautiful set. The pics for each cover are terrific. The back-cover is very nice with circles featuring snapshots from different episodes. One thing I'm a little surprised of is that there are no pictures of Telma Hopkins as "Addy". I wonder if they couldn't use her picture for some reason. Not even in the snapshots do we get a pic of Nell and Addy together in of their crazy moments. Aside from that, this looks like the comprehensive set we had all hoped for.

I stuck a couple of discs in really quick to check for a few musical moments. In "Second Chance (Part 2)" both of Nell's performances are in tact. I think I also saw a midway bumper that a poster had mentioned. I was checking through the episode quickly and it caught my eye. Plus, "Sam Goes to College" is presented as a 1-hour episode (is that how it initially aired?).

All-in-all, VEI did an excellent job on this set. Beautiful graphics, great menu design, nice packaging. We never thought the day would come that we would have the complete series in uncut DVD-quality, BUT IT'S HERE!!! And I know we will all enjoy this set over and over again. Happy Viewing! :tv: :)

I got mine today too and am beyond estatic! I agree, the outer cardboard packaging is a little flimsy, but with all the plastic cases in it it is not a problem. This is the first multi season complete series I ever purchased. I am now about to start watching. I like to watch in order so I'll be starting with season three (since I have the individual S1 from Universal & S2 from VEI). Thankfully VEI included the bonus episodes from the first two seasons so I even get to watch an episode of The Stockard Channing Show. I love the packaging and love how they have different pics from different seasons on the correct seasons' discs. It would have been nice to see a pic of Addy and/or Grandpa on the cover or discs, but not that's ok. I take back everything negative I said about VEI. In the end they came though. And from what you guys have already said, boy did they come through! At the price I paid I was expecting heavy edits but so far that doesn't seem to be the case! Well, I'm off to watch my all time favorite sitcom again :D:D

She also sang 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' from the 'Herbie' episode.
Definitely my favorite.

Those were the first episodes I watched tonight because you mentioned that Nell sang in them. I always liked her singing. I just don't know which episodes she sang in, so thanks!
I also saw the bumper on both parts. After the first act, the picture fades but the applause continues, and then they flash the bumper, which is a still shot from the opening where the cast is gathered on the stairs and the title, Gimme a Break, is superimposed over the picture.
The good news is that all the episodes on Season 5, Disc 2 were in the 24 minutes and 53 seconds range, so they appear to be uncut.

Yes, this is a magnificent set! It's amazing that VEI was able to release this complete series when Universal and any other studio you mentioned it to would back away. And from the looks of things at Amazon Canada, it is selling really well. I hope it is one VEI's most successful releases. Maybe they will license out more shows in the future and follow the same "Complete Series" format. :)

That would be great.

I would be in heaven to have complete series of other '80s six-season hits "It's a Living" and "Mama's Family", two of my top wants.

Unfortunately, Warners is very tight-fisted about licensing their sitcoms out. Only recently did Shout! acquire "The Norm Show" coming this Sept.

Hopefully Warners will relinquish rights to other shows they own, or offer them to consumers as part of their Manufacture-on-Demand program.

I would like both of those shows as well. I know I've seen "It's a Living" suggested over at Shout's Community board several times. But no word on whether or not they are interested in it. Whoever releases it should do it now because many of the cast members are still around and, from what I hear, they would be interested in participating in a release of the show on dvd.

After GAB, my next choice to receive the complete series treatment is 'Who's The Boss?

I'd love that! I have season 1.

It's either up to VEI or Shout to make this happen!

Got my set last week. I watched all of season 3 and am now starting to watch season 4. It's been years since I saw a Gimme A Break episode, the reruns never seem to air in Canada, the last time reruns aired was in the late 1980's on CTV.
